That last bloke has a good point. We need a film with fancy visual effects to get people interesting in something that is already incredibly interesting. These are sad days to be sure. That being said, he people were interested from the start we wouldn't have this awesome piece of film!
Also, people work in a very "visual" manner. Telling most people "we're about to land a probe on a comet" simply doesn't speak to them : most can't represent what it means, what it looks like to "land a probe on a comet". But give them a fancy shot of the lander separating from its spacecraft, with the comet majestically rotating below, and now you're talking to them in a language they can understand. Eyesight is our main sense, we often need to see stuff to understand it. It's like turning raw data into a graph. (sorry if this sounds a bit unclear and mixed up. I am clearly sleep deprived)
It's not the masses or the mainstream that create new technology who push the boundaries of our minds our bodies etc it's the ones who are interested in these things to the point they will do something about it and quite frankly those are the ones who really matter, the fancy visuals are simply to show the broader audience including the governments and big companies as a good piece of press is good and so is sharing a passion/project
That last quote about needing a film like this to convince people that this mission is important/interesting made me sad. And it is sad. But also unfortunately true. I recently visited the Kennedy Space Center and was absolutely shocked at the amount of people who viewed our scientific accomplishments with such a blasé attitude. Just seeing the Saturn V rocket made me want to give up my current career and go back to school for engineering. I want to see mankind succeed technologically, scientifically, and push our boundaries. And I want to be a part of that. Just wish more of the general public would want to as well.
Stunning visual effects! Now my ambition is to be stranded on a distant rocky planet with Aisling Franciosi as Mistress and me as Apprentice. I'd be a very devoted student, I'm sure. Aisling means 'dream, vision'. Isn't she just? Especially when her eyes change colour - outta space!
Oh! The idea is so amazing! Post-humans, transhumanists... That is exactly what we should show for people. We may become post-humans in the next 50 years. Ambitious plan? Yes! And we will do it!
Awesome looks, it should be more of these films and storytelling for all to achieve better understanding of our past and future past, in the future and near future that is ;)
I thought the mission was interesting from the start. Just saw this short film now. It's a pity not as much data was gathered 'cos of the botched landing phase, but it was still a great mission.
The final point is all too valid but without the "game of thrones actor", I doubt anyone who isn't already interested would have watched this video. We unfortunately live in a time where people are just so distracted by what is essentially complete bollocks, that no one takes the time to philosophise with oneself. People are losing their imagination, their sense of exploration. It's not entirely their own fault. Schooling, society, entertainment, play little to no role in encouraging this mental capacity.
Interesting, and inspirational, but as the Rosetta mission is showing, there is no water on comets. Best fitting theory at this point is that like the water on Earth, the water in a comet's tail is produced in the tail, from solar wind protons and Oxygen compounds electrostatically pulled from the comet's core.
"In early October 2014, activity in the region above the ‘neck’ of the comet became high enough for water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) to be detected by the instrument’s high spectral resolution channel, VIRTIS-H." ESA press release.

Ignas Beleckas Ruuuuudeeee??????? Even though our accent is a little bit tough, many of us speaks the same as the English. I bet you wouldn't even say one word in Polish correctly.
whatever... its a joke. My point was: This guy makes a freakin good short movie with international star casting in it but he speaks polish... when he is telling how he was making the movie and etc.. from my point of view its not professional. But probably its just me. Still he did a very good job. Besides im from Lithuania and i have alot of Polish friends. I would do a same critique on Lithuanian or other nationality person.
Ignas Beleckas I don't care that you have friends that speak Polish. It was rude what you said in your first comment. He indeed made a really good short movie and if you think that he did then don't just make fun of us. I'm finishing this conversation, cause it's ridiculous.

piranha031091 No worries, man. Totally understood. I agree with you.

"We wanted to excite people about this mission. Not just the mission itself, but the bigger philosophical questions."
Mission accomplished.
make the whole movie! That would be great!

You guys rock, this was the best way to learn about science and your work

Certainly, that last guy is 100% correct.
Thank You ESA! For giving us (a much needed) dose of hope and ambition.
So awesome. Excellent way to communicate this amazing mission.
Stunning visual effects!

Truly awesome!

I wonder who made the soundtrack of it. It reminds me of Mass Effect. I just love it!
The film's soundtrack itself is by Atanas Valkov. You can find it online and it's also available for purchase.

I hope polish people one day will learn this extremely difficult English language. God help them.

Brawo, jesteś idiotą i żadne z tych słów nie jest polskie :) Ignas Beleckas
