    I felt like I just watched you creatively sabotage yourself during every step of this process to make the whole thing take 3 times as long and 4 times harder. You clearly have a solid grasp on all the principles of knife making / restoration. If you planned out each step beforehand and used the simplest techniques you would breeze through projects like this and wouldn't have to worry about repeating your work or fixing it later.

      AmoxIll Care to elaborate as to why I made it take a longer time. What do you mean with simplest techniques?

    I just restored a Victorinox butcher knife with a tang the same shape as the one your working on here. I put two sides of wood on it with a complicated plexiglass filler piece to go around the tang. BUT having a closer look at this tang shape it looks as if this design is to accommodate a small circular saw blade making a shallow cut to envelope the tang perfectly. This two scale handle seems like a lot of extra work although we both did nice work regardless. Interesting that there would be a fuller on that blade, maybe it helps in piercing and pulling while carving large cased vegetables and fruit like pumpkin, watermelon, squash, etc.

      I thought of doing the the cut for the tang on a circular saw as well. But i decided doing it with chisels and a knife, which went better than expected. As for the fuller i've also wondered what it was for since it's not a very big knife. I will ask my dad since it was his. :D

    If knife restoration is the new meme... I'm perfectly okay with that. It means we get to see people fix up rusty old things, and give them a new life.

    What type of coating/resin would you use to make a wood handle sanitary to use

    • @MakeNCreate
      @MakeNCreate  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would never use any varnish on a wooden handle. only oil.

    My guess is that is an old kitchen knife...probably way older than 35 years which would only be circa 1980 ....looks more like 50's or 60's common construction

    illegal folder alert! criminal! go wait at the front door, the army is on their way! :)
    also, sanding with the knife on a flat surface instead of the vise will give you a much easier time getting the desired surface.

    if this was not a good steel why did u restore it. just a hobby or had sentimental value?

    • @MakeNCreate
      @MakeNCreate  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A ROD I liked the idea of having one of my dads old knifes, so to some point it maybe is a bit sentimental. It is one of my hobbies to restore old stuff, and even though the steel is not of very good quality, it still cuts. :)

      @MakeNCreate  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think you realise how bad condition the wood was in...

    • @madsromlund3835
      @madsromlund3835 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, if you look at it, it was a pretty big handle, made og some kind of oak... if you maby had taken the time, and filed and pulished it up, you might have been able to restore the handle too... allso, look at how much the wood helt up when you tried to take it off... but none or less, its an awesome video :D
