Hiking 4 Days Alone in the Austrian Alps in Winter | Small & Grateful

- I hiked 4 days alone in the Hohe Tauern National Park in the Austrian Alps in November of 2022. Definitely the hardest solo hike I've done so far, beautiful and intimidating at times. I underestimated the snow and how hard the tracks would become because of it. I started in a small village called Mallnitz and did some sort of a loop hike, slept in the winter room of the Hannoverhaus and spent 2 nights in the self-catering hut Celler Hütte along the way. You can find the exact route I hiked in the links below. I am happy to share the cinematic hiking film I shot during this trip now with you.

Everything on the ground was shot with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K and a Canon 10-18mm lens. For the drone shots I used a DJI Air 2S.
This film won an award as the "Best Documentary Short".

This was shot in November of 2022! I think the route would be almost undoable in January because of the snow!

It is hard to predict how the conditions will be in late March, but I would guess that there will still be a lot of snow. I wouldn't recommend doing it then. I did it after light snowfall and it was already really hard. Often times I had to improvise because the tracks were barely visible. Visiting the area and doing some light hikes in the valleys will still be beautiful though!
Beautiful video! What part of November did you go? I may end up going middle-end of the month and can't seem to find information on hiking the Austrian Alps during that time
Thanks man! That was just in the beginning of November and I got lucky that there wasn't much snow. And it was still hard though! I wouldn't recommend doing something like this any later in the year, if you're not highly experienced. Something I always do is check the webcams of the area to get an impression of the conditions. But they also only tell half the truth, it's much different when you're actually there. So keep that in mind and be cautious! 😊
