Street Voluntarios da Patria (Volunteers of the Fatherland) is a public road in the historic center of the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. It starts at Rua Marechal Floriano Peixoto, in front of Praça Pereira Parobé (current Terminal Pereira Parobé), and ends at Rua Ricardo Seibel de Freitas Lima, in the Farrapos neighborhood.
There are many shops on this street, most of which sell clothes.
The name Voluntários da Pátria was a tribute to the volunteers who fought in the Paraguayan War, which started in 1865 with the invasion of São Borja and Uruguaiana by the forces of Francisco Solano López. Along with the gauchos of the 39th Battalion, an imperial pennant accompanied them, and today it is kept as a relic in the Igreja da Matriz, along with the national flag of the Empire.
Porto Alegre is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Its population of 1,488,252 inhabitants (2020) makes it the twelfth most populous city in the country and the center of Brazil's fifth largest metropolitan area, with 4,405,760 inhabitants (2010). The city is the southernmost capital city of a Brazilian state.
Porto Alegre was founded in 1769 by Manuel Jorge Gomes de Sepúlveda, who used the pseudonym José Marcelino de Figueiredo to hide his identity; but the official date is 1772 with the act signed by immigrants from the Azores, Portugal
