I was about 10 or 11 when this came out - this lineup was a very large number of the most popular artists at the time, with some pretty notable exceptions (Madonna, Stevie Nicks, etc.) If I remember correctly, this was a group of people that came straight from an awards show to go record this song.

To understand... in the mid 80s, Africa was experiencing severe drought and famine. A group of British rockers lead by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure released a record (Do They Know its Christmas) with all proceeds going to famine relief in Africa. Then USA rockers lead by Harry Belafonte, Ken Kragen and Quincey Jones, recorded the video here with the same goal. The last effort was LIVE AID. This is a weekend concert televised from three continents. The Live Aid video of Queen you watched is from that concert. Phil Collins flew on the SST Concord to all three continents and performed in USA, UK and Australia in the same concert. It was televised on MTV. Incredible concert. The finale song in the UK included Bob Geldof, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury and most of the huge array of rockers that performed throughout the weekend event. The videos of the Uk Christmas record and that finale are on You Tube. They raised over $200 million and it was sent to Africa. Unfortunately it was intercepted by a dictator and terrorist group who used it for weapons against its own citizens. Still... no generation before or after in music ever took on such a huge task which could have made a difference. Next to this, in 1986, you have Comic Relief USA by Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal. They raised OVER $50 million for the homeless in the USA. I am very proud to be part of the generation that gave so much to humankind. ✌🏻

If it is an expression of Love and Truth , its a beautiful thing no matter what your pigmentation of skin tones. As you sit in your room recording your reactions to various forms of music , your soul is touched by certain memories that are valued. Your family does not have to be with you in the physical to know that you love them. I know this is some deep stuff, but I know you will understand what I am saying. Music is just that added vehicle of expression to ones inner soul. Good music is simply Good music. Peace.
No, we don't. The world may be full of political tensions now, but when you see a man with his nine children, all looking like concentration camp survivors, standing outside a tent where his wife and his equally skeletal infant are dying inside then the medical doctor says they'll be dead by the end of the day, and the other kids within two weeks, cause they have used so much of their body mass to feed themselves, they'll never recover. Just giving them small amounts of food in that state of weakness could kill them from the shock to their system. And then multiply it by hundreds of thousands, everywhere, for months on end. It does something to a young person watching that. You do not know how fortunate we are that no one seems to be facing that kind of threat today.

The images of that time from Africa are burned in my soul, right up there with the ones from 9/11. We and them are so better off now.
There was also a single recorded by some Canadian artists around the same time, under the name Northern Lights with "Tears Are Not Enough". Bryan Adams was a co-writer of the song. Some of the artists who sang on it included Gordon Lightfoot, Burton Cummings of The Guess Who, Anne Murray, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Mike Reno from Loverboy, Geddy Lee from Rush, Corey Hart, Tom Cochrane, and Paul Shaffer. It was a pretty good song as well, raising money for the African famine relief.

The next man was Al Jarreau, then Kenny Loggins who sang footloose, Tina Turner, and Steve Perry from journey, you got him. And you guessed correctly Daryl Hall. In the back actually singing chorus was Dan Aykroyd and also Bette Midler. The incredible voiced powerful Black woman was Dionne Warwick joined by Willie Nelson. Next included Huey Lewis, and a voice that you recognized but couldn’t place what is the legendary Bob Dylan! Oh and the incredible voiced woman with crazy colored hair was Cyndi Lauper. Towards the end there was an incredible Solo by James Ingram. The song was mainly written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. I sang on this song with my high school's choir in 1985. The song was unprecedented at the time ( I still don't know of another that raised so much money, not to mention awareness). Just look at the artists that participated.... almost every single one of them are legends. I'm proud of my generation, we tried so hard to make a positive impact. I know there are still people that try but in those days music was for everybody and there were no rock, country, rap, soul stations. I heard it all on every station I listened to. That's one of the biggest reasons this was so successful... because everybody heard it on every station. Well that and we had MTV when it was about music and not about all these BS reality shows. Maybe at some point it will come together again and music will belong to everybody 🙏

I was just a kid when this song first came out. I cried then and I cry now when I hear it. It was a beautiful thing to witness all these artists come to together for such an important message.
I took a chance and wrote to Quincy Jones on Twitter several years ago practically begging him to try to come together with another collaboration with all the division going on in this world. He never responded of course, but i figured it didn't hurt to at least ask.

This was for Live Aid the whole world came together with all artist and gave free concerts and we all could watch it live on TV and donate for Afrika , i know i had a dog that was 80 kilo and the lady at the bank said just give a dollar for every kilo the dog weighed so i did , did not have much at the time but was glad to be a part of this world wide happening , beautiful how all artist showed up for Live Aid This was USA for Afrika but you also had Do they know its Christmas from England ,and great perfomances from all the legends of music back then, the world rocked for Afrika ,shame we could not hold on to that .

This embodies the whole difference between the music of the eighties and now. The key factor was hope, we really believed we could make a difference. So many of our songs even if sad still retained a thread of hope.

It was a couple of activists that went around to production companies/musicians to find someone who would do it. I believe they got Quincy Jones (who produced this song and you can see in the video is the one conducting) on board who then got Michael and Lionel to write it. It all doesn't matter in the end because the world ended up with two great songs. I would prefer this one because it has more artists I know plus not being Christmas themed is a bonus.

I was a senior in highschool when this came out. It was an international school and this was our anthem. Great great memories and also very sad - that great famine was horrifying and unfortunately hunger (and filthy water) are still major issues in loads of places nearly 40 years later
First, Quincy is genius. Second, back then we were doing pretty good with coming together more. There were problems for sure, but things were improving until millennials and zoomers arrived and trashed all of the progress. Fire was stoked up and each group was told that the other hated them. It’s going to take generations to get back to the good progress that we were making in the 80’s and 90’s.

My favorite part of that song is the duet with Stevie and Bruce - the contrast between Stevie's smooth notes, and Bruce's hard raspy fry is so epic. My favorite moment of Leo's reaction was when he realized he recognized Steve Perry - "JOURNEY JOURNEY" Amazing to think a year ago when you started this...ahem...journey,...you would have known maybe three of these. I was in high school when this song came out. It took over MTV, the radio, everyone was talking about it. Thanks to MTV (back when all they did was play music videos) we all knew who each of the artists were. One thing people always asked back then was why Dan Akyroyd was in the choir. To understand... in the mid 80s, Africa was experiencing severe drought and famine. A group of British rockers lead by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure released a record (Do They Know its Christmas) with all proceeds going to famine relief in Africa. Then USA rockers lead by Harry Belafonte, Ken Kragen and Quincey Jones, recorded the video here with the same goal. The last effort was LIVE AID. This is a weekend concert televised from three continents. The Live Aid video of Queen you watched is from that concert. Phil Collins flew on the SST Concord to all three continents and performed in USA, UK and Australia in the same concert. It was televised on MTV. Incredible concert. The finale song in the UK included Bob Geldof, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury and most of the huge array of rockers that performed throughout the weekend event. The videos of the Uk Christmas record and that finale are on You Tube.
They raised over $200 million and it was sent to Africa. Unfortunately it was intercepted by a dictator and terrorist group who used it for weapons against its own citizens.
Still... no generation before or after in music ever took on such a huge task which could have made a difference. Next to this, in 1986, you have Comic Relief USA by Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal. They raised OVER $50 million for the homeless in the USA. I am very proud to be part of the generation that gave so much to humankind. ✌🏻

If it is an expression of Love and Truth , its a beautiful thing no matter what your pigmentation of skin tones.
Love is eternal, and proof of this is when ever we experience the physical loss of someone dear to us. As you sit in your room recording your reactions to various forms of music , your soul is touched by certain memories that are valued. Your family does not have to be with you in the physical to know that you love them. I know this is some deep stuff, but I know you will understand what I am saying. Music is just that added vehicle of expression to ones inner soul. Good music is simply Good music. Peace.

The 80's were great. I miss it. I wish things were still like that. We had problems but not on the scale that we see in today's world.
No, we don't. The world may be full of political tensions now, but when you see a man with his nine children, all looking like concentration camp survivors, standing outside a tent where his wife and his equally skeletal infant are dying inside then the medical doctor says they'll be dead by the end of the day, and the other kids within two weeks, cause they have used so much of their body mass to feed themselves, they'll never recover. Just giving them small amounts of food in that state of weakness could kill them from the shock to their system. And then multiply it by hundreds of thousands, everywhere, for months on end. It does something to a young person watching that. You do not know how fortunate we are that no one seems to be facing that kind of threat today.

There was also a single recorded by some Canadian artists around the same time, under the name Northern Lights with "Tears Are Not Enough". Bryan Adams was a co-writer of the song. Some of the artists who sang on it included Gordon Lightfoot, Burton Cummings of The Guess Who, Anne Murray, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Mike Reno from Loverboy, Geddy Lee from Rush, Corey Hart, Tom Cochrane, and Paul Shaffer. It was a pretty good song as well, raising money for the African famine relief.

The next man was Al Jarreau, then Kenny Loggins who sang footloose, Tina Turner, and Steve Perry from journey, you got him. And you guessed correctly Daryl Hall. In the back actually singing chorus was Dan Aykroyd and also Bette Midler. The incredible voiced powerful Black woman was Dionne Warwick joined by Willie Nelson. Next included Huey Lewis, and a voice that you recognized but couldn’t place what is the legendary Bob Dylan! Oh and the incredible voiced woman with crazy colored hair was Cyndi Lauper. You got Ray Charles and of course Michael Jackson. And the incredible duet at the end wells again Stevie Wonder and the great Bruce Springsteen! Towards the end there was an incredible Solo by James Ingram. The song was mainly written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. I sang on this song with my high school's choir in 1985. The song was unprecedented at the time ( I still don't know of another that raised so much money, not to mention awareness). Just look at the artists that participated.... almost every single one of them are legends. I'm proud of my generation, we tried so hard to make a positive impact. I know there are still people that try but in those days music was for everybody and there were no rock, country, rap, soul stations. I heard it all on every station I listened to. That's one of the biggest reasons this was so successful... because everybody heard it on every station. Well that and we had MTV when it was about music and not about all these BS reality shows. Maybe at some point it will come together again and music will belong to everybody 🙏

I was a much younger woman when this collaboration happened. Watching it all these years later, brings tears to my eyes. This embodies the whole difference between the music of the eighties and now. The key factor was hope, we really believed we could make a difference. So many of our songs even if sad still retained a thread of hope.

@@sandracox4341 Band Aid didn't sing this song, they only did Do They Know It's Christmas in 1984, which inspired Lioner and Michael to come up with their own charity single, which is this one. So it's the concept that Band Aid did first, not the song.

It was a couple of activists that went around to production companies/musicians to find someone who would do it. I believe they got Quincy Jones (who produced this song and you can see in the video is the one conducting) on board who then got Michael and Lionel to write it.
It all doesn't matter in the end because the world ended up with two great songs. I would prefer this one because it has more artists I know plus not being Christmas themed is a bonus.

My favorite part of that song is the duet with Stevie and Bruce - the contrast between Stevie's smooth notes, and Bruce's hard raspy fry is so epic. My favorite moment of Leo's reaction was when he realized he recognized Steve Perry - "JOURNEY JOURNEY"
Amazing to think a year ago when you started this...ahem...journey,...you would have known maybe three of these. As a fan of most of these artists growing up in the 80s this is a powerfully nostalgic moment and I loved seeing Leo enjoy the same artists I'm loved my whole life.
I was in high school when this song came out. It took over MTV, the radio, everyone was talking about it. Thanks to MTV (back when all they did was play music videos) we all knew who each of the artists were. One thing people always asked back then was why Dan Akyroyd was in the choir. He was a very popular actor at that time, but wasn't known for his singing, but he was one of the main characters in the Blue Brothers movie which I think you should react to on your other channel. You'd love it.
