If you disconnect the clutch cable at the lever first then you don't need to remove the clutch linkage eliminating the need to set the angle. This makes it all go much quicker and easier. 😉
Great Video! My clutch cable broke yesterday on my '03 SV650S and I have to do this to it. The attachment mechanisms seem to be the same so this video has given me a great deal of foresight. Thank you so much for providing this content in high quality resolution and easy to follow instruction!
i do a lot of work on my bike and normally just drive it through the shop for a cable that i know will be a pain, just because i don't want to deal with it myself. this trick just saved me so much time and trouble due to a snapped cable. thanks!
JUST A QUICK UPDATE FOR YOU TAMSEN. You're one of the best on the internet as a GO TO source for sv650s. I have a second gen 2004 s which I'm converting to a more upright position. I was running the clutch cable from the naked 650 as it's 4.13" longer and the 90 degree bend hung up in my frame before the speed adjuster screw. I put the tank upright and moved the airbox up on the left side a couple inches and saw the problem. I was able to correct by cutting the 90 degree metal tube off and was able to finish the job satisfactorily. I used duct tape initially and this probably allowed me to pull cable to cable.I hope this helps others.
Excellent demonstration on how to change the clutch cable, don't worry about forgetting parts, it happens, especially when you are trying to record the process.
Just wanted to say, very useful videos. Have been riding 50 + years, have ridden SV since 2002. Done 131K on it, but done very little maintenance. Basically replaced wearing parts. Just having a problem now with non starter, maybe clutch switch. Anyway, thanks for all your insights. Mine has an Arrow titanium exhaust, big bore high level, what a sound! Just like a Ducati . Take care, Dave.
Greetings from Texas USA! Thanks for posting these videos Tamsen. They are quite helpful for maintaining my DL650 V Strom. Both bikes are very similar.
Yeah there are a lot of similarities between those bikes. I love hearing from people all over the world, one of the great things about TH-cam is on your video stats it shows all the different parts of the world that viewers come from, I am amazed and humbled at the number of people around the world have seen the videos! Thanks for your nice comment, I should be posting some new videos soon!
Nice video! Straight forward job, though it's nice to actually see it before doing it myself. My 2005 SV650n clutch cable just snapped at an intersection and I was left to walk it down the sidewalk about two miles back home. Only 10k on the original cable, too. Tip to people, it's an easy job and a cheap part, carry an extra cable with you on longer trips!
I am sorry to hear about what happened, glad you were reasonably close to home, it is a cheap part so I agree, don't mess about with it, as it starts to get worn just replace it.
I understand how, in the moment I was more concerned with not limping my bike through rush hour traffic. I wanted off the road, I appreciate your concern though.
Nice demonstration (apart from forgetting the rubber boot - we've all done similar lol) I own a 2015 sv650s so I'll be searching through your videos for more tips. :>)
LOL, video reminds me of changing out the clutch cable on my 2003 Triumph Speed Four. It just didn't seem right until I adjusted the slack per the Triumph manual.... LOL. Love the videos. My wife just got into riding recently and we enjoy the vids. Cheers! Mike
@Albert Yeah I really edited out the swearing that went along with forgetting to put the rubber boot back on! Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for your comment.
Ms. Cooper, probably you have heard this plenty of times but I can´t help myself from saying that this video is excellent! Thank you! I wonder if you have the specs to do the same job in a Gs 500e. All the best from Colombia, South América!
Great video unfortunately my clutch linkage came apart so I had the joys of seeing ball bearings . I'm sure I put it was all back into place 're greased e t c , I can Change gear but the clutch is not disconnecting as when in first gear, then pull clutch lever in she is still pulling, I'm tried the clutch mantra method adjusting the linkage , getting nowhere just getting irritated , removing the clutch linkage and it coming apart means Everything is changed. It's going back into the garage now wished I had not touched it :-(
Oh I know how that feels when what should be a straightforward job turns into something much more than that! I have now stopped using the phrase 'quick job' as that seems to put a curse on the time it will actually take! Have you got it sorted now?
no sadly sadly i fitted the new cable i had a bar change to higher not a race bunny and it all fits well, it changes gear etc.. but i seem to have an excessive drag, i thought if you pulled it in the clutch was not connected.. checked in on my other bikes and yep even they if lever pull in and into gear they seem to have resistance.. really confused now as when i pull lever in from first gear, it is trying to move forward.. confused isnot the word , sounds to me like garage time i really tried to make sure the actuator is all ok using the clutch guru
I have had moments where I have needed to concede and head up to a local bike garage for help. The best thing though is to talk with them about the work done, so at least you can get some info from the situation. I hope they get it all sorted.
If you follow this method you may start to hear a sucking noise off in the distance when you remove the clutch push rod assembly. That sucking noise is going to be your life once you realize all of the tiny ball bearings have fallen out. Ask me how I know. Just download the shop manual and follow that.
Hey Daniel, thanks for taking the time to comment, I am not sure about why all the bearing would fall out, as the clutch push rod was not removed, it was only the cable that was adjusted- although having taken one apart in the past I can relate to the tiny bearing inside them, if you get the time, can you let me know how this went wrong for you and maybe I can include it in a future video?
Hi, Thanks for the great suggestion! I just bought a spare SV650 engine so I could do exactly those types of videos and make filming clearer. I have added your suggestion to the list, hopefully you have hit the subscribe button so you will know when it comes out!
I tried to do this with and OEM clutch cable and my clutch simply doesnt function right. I have the least possible slack at the top end to the point where it sometimes falls out of place, and i have adjust the lock nuts to the highest point down at the engine side. I think the cable is too long? Also at 5:12 when you talk about the clutch adjustment plate angle, i cant adjust it as one side of the bolt snapped off!! Having a nightmare
It probably could have done a few more miles, however, a new cable is about £10 so not serious money, it stretches over time so when it gets close to the maximum adjustment (which mine was) it was precautionary to replace it before it was at risk of snapping.
It would be a rare event but the theory is it could happen. Maintenance is about that though, precautionary rather than repair, which usually causes damage and therefore can end up being more expensive.
where did you get your clutch cable? I have tried to find mine on all the oem sites but it seems like they don't sell just the cable! Thanks again for all your amazing videos!!!
I just got a 2000 sv650 and replaced the clutch cable. But when my clutch is pulled in and I give it throttle it still gets power to the wheel. Any advice?
so when you pull on the lever, and you follow the cable down to the bottom of the engine, is it fully engaging and disengaging the clutch? you should be able to pull the lever and see it move (with the engine off and the bike on its side stand is fine)
I really really really need your video on how to remove the fairing .... it's actually quite frustrating I've been searching for over 30minutes and can't find anything and all your videos I'm clicking on you have the fairings off....
Hey, which part of the bike are you trying to get to? Most of the fairings are held on with hex bolts, with the occasional screw. If you let me know which bit you need access to and I will try and help a bit more.
+TakyX hey, it is a bit rough round the edges but I did a quick video on taking the fairing off. If you are replacing the clutch cable, you may not need to remove the fairing at all, just tape one end of the new clutch cable to the end of the old one and you can just pull it through. If the video doesn't cover what you need then let me know, I hope it helps. th-cam.com/video/mhQaim-doNY/w-d-xo.html
Tamsen Cooper the video is unavailable :( I'm also doing this in a very small shed lol so no room to look under the bike and such so I'll have to remove the fairing
Could atleast show erverything step by step when you removed the clutch gauche because all the bearings fell out and now when i put in first gear my motor falls out
I followed yor steps in this video. but my clutch realease fell apart when i too it out, now i got 3 parts taht i dont know how to fit them, togheter, i thougth i got them right but when i put everything on again, there is no resistance in the cluth lever, and for waht i can see the rod behind the realese dont move:/ pls help me out
Hi, sorry to hear you are having troubles. Are you able to email me a picture of the parts you have so I can get a better idea of how it has gone wrong?
one thing i notice too, is that my cable moves put the pin that gose into the transmission, dosent move. im new to biking, but i think that it should push in the rod slightly to make cluth disenage am i right?
Have managed to sort it by dismantling the clutch and replacing the oil. Being my first bike I bought decent oil for it but made the mistake of it being car oil. It was the correct grade but car oil none the less. Now reassembled and decent power 1 oil it’s like a new bike.
oil= life blood of bike!! I always suggest buying the best oil you can afford, your bike will thank you for it!! I am pleased you are back up and running though.
Yeah, I went to the MCN motorbike show in London the other week, it was amazing so I have loads of good ideas from there, I have however broken my shoulder, so I will need to do vids when the pain isn't too bad and of course they will be one handed! lol!
I was literally messing with my clutch this morning. a couple of days ago I messed with the clutch nut and my clutch started dragging as o did the little screw in to tight. I just fixed it but my cable is at its tightest point at the clutch end and the lever end so I guess I need to replace it. here is a picture
+Rae Carter The picture is not working however if you say it is at its tightest both ends then yes I would say replace it- cost is not much, maybe £10. I have not forgotten about the brake line video, the Hel lines are on, the callipers are gleaming, I just need to fill the system with brake fluid and bleed, then add that to the completed video so far!
+Tamsen Cooper I did it all myself thanks Tamsen. got lovely hel lines on both ends. need a new rear disc and brake pads though I think. once again brilliant video
+Tamsen Cooper Given the cost of replacement, as you said always better to err on side of caution than running the risk of a snapped cable on the road.. A long term rider once told me only after having pushed a motorcycle a mile or two, do you fully understand the importance of erring on the side of caution, and its a mantra I have adopted since I last broke down. lol.
The technique of taping the old and new cables together and pulling them through saved me so much effort! Thank you!
If you disconnect the clutch cable at the lever first then you don't need to remove the clutch linkage eliminating the need to set the angle. This makes it all go much quicker and easier. 😉
This is the best clutch replacement video. THANK YOU!

You’ve made some of the best SV650 maintenance videos I’ve seen. I appreciate it, they’ve definitely helped me work on my SV650
i do a lot of work on my bike and normally just drive it through the shop for a cable that i know will be a pain, just because i don't want to deal with it myself. this trick just saved me so much time and trouble due to a snapped cable. thanks!

+GTs Garage Thanks, I like including my mistakes, if it helps someone else to not forget!

Thanks Dave for your lovely comments. I bet your bike sounds amazing! Safe riding
Are you in the 🇬🇧
what a lovely garage, I wish you a lot of fun.
Thank you!
Thanks for that tip at 5:55. I would have been frustrated not knowing that trick.

I love your message and I am so pleased your wife is enjoying the videos as well. Thanks for the nice comments.
Great video thank you. I copied everything you did and the job was done in no time..cheers lee
I have fitted then new one... Thank you soooo much. But now the clutch is slipping! What have I don't wrong and how do I fix it
You have an excellent library of videos, Tamsen; I just subscribed!
Thank you, really pleased you are enjoying them. Thanks for the sub
good job Tamsen, greeting from Spain
Thank you
after this I feel I can do mine. easy, clear step video, thank you
@Albert Yeah I really edited out the swearing that went along with forgetting to put the rubber boot back on! Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for your comment.
+Tamsen Cooper your videos are awesome!
Even for a second gen owner :D
+Crazy Man Productions lol! Thanks for the great comment, it makes my day to get such nice comments

It would be a rare event but the theory is it could happen. Maintenance is about that though, precautionary rather than repair, which usually causes damage and therefore can end up being more expensive.
yes it can snap, mine did earlier today 😠 it was at the top end where the cable attaches to the lever
where did you get your clutch cable? I have tried to find mine on all the oem sites but it seems like they don't sell just the cable! Thanks again for all your amazing videos!!!
I haven't had any trouble finding it:
SV650: 58200-20F00
SV650S: 58200-19F00
About to do this on mine wish me luck lol.
I just got a 2000 sv650 and replaced the clutch cable. But when my clutch is pulled in and I give it throttle it still gets power to the wheel. Any advice?
It does not sound like your clutch is being fully engaged, have you adjusted it so that there is not excess slack?
I set it to the spec in the book.
so when you pull on the lever, and you follow the cable down to the bottom of the engine, is it fully engaging and disengaging the clutch? you should be able to pull the lever and see it move (with the engine off and the bike on its side stand is fine)
Not sure howto tell

buy oem. i was almost left stranded.
Could atleast show erverything step by step when you removed the clutch gauche because all the bearings fell out and now when i put in first gear my motor falls out
14mm free play ... I think thats too much.. My mechanic friend tells me as long as you can fit 50p in the gap its fine
That a good way of looking at it!
I followed yor steps in this video. but my clutch realease fell apart when i too it out, now i got 3 parts taht i dont know how to fit them, togheter, i thougth i got them right but when i put everything on again, there is no resistance in the cluth lever, and for waht i can see the rod behind the realese dont move:/

Get you a 2nd gen.
Gonna be honest, the measuring makes no sense as I have no clue what you're measuring off of. I'll have to take a look into it further
I race Suzuki sv 650 , so you want to get marry ,d 😀😇
