As a kid, I STUBBORNLY stuck with Charizard through thick and thin...I refused to EVER use Blastoise since my older brother used it, so screw that. In the gen3 remakes, I'm team Bulbasaur. I have fond memories of my derpy dragon bro, but Bulbasaur is definitely number 1 in my heart now.
I always chose Bulbasaur as a kid but was bullied into thinking it was no good. That Charmander and Squirtle were the only common sense options. I'm glad I was able to keep Bulba on my team
I actually like it once you get Swords Dance. It easily solos Sabrina. And in Yellow, it can get Fly, which, when combined with Earthquake/ Dig, is pretty good coverage. It's not the best starter, but it's fun. It does struggle in the beginning when it just has Ember.
Brock isn't that bad honestly. His Pokemon have low Special which can be exploited and you can get turns if you score the burn and he has nothing to hit you Super Effective with though Geodude has pretty high Attack for that point in the game and you have to play around Bide against Onix. Misty is a huge problem though. Staryu isn't overly difficult but Starmie is just really strong for the point in the game you encounter it and really strong overall.
Misty is actually easy enough starting as Charmander. Simply catch Pikachu early on, he's literally 1 of the first Pokémon you can catch, and just level it alongside Charmander so he'll have enough xp to stand up to Starmie and wreck her with his type advantage.
@@pokerebels It's really not that bad. It's better than trying to catch Caterpie/Beedle in Blue/Red respectively, I've never had issues getting my Pikachu in Viridian Forest when I wanted him and it never took too long.
When I was a kid my first playthough was with a charizard. By the time I got to the elite 4 it was like lvl 75 or 80. As a kid the concept of building a team didn't occur to me so I just muscled my way through the game with it using other mons for guest appearances in fights where he went down.
@@pokerebels that's how we did it the old days! No strategy or plans. Just send out your strongest guy and spam your strongest attack. And that's how we liked it!
I picked Charmander once. I probably won't again lol but it was better than I thought it would be. Good enough attack to be a very effective Dig user, and I was really surprised at how well Brock went all things considered. But ya this game isn't too kind to fire types lol At least it's lucky enough to learn Flamethrower. (Eventually) Without a Flamethrower TM in this game, other fire types get it even worse.
Brock's Pokemon having low Special and a limited team helps. If he had a Kabuto or Omanyte, you'd be stuck. Charizard's got the widest movepool among the Gen 1 Fire types and its stats are good enough for it. Getting Earthquake which the other Fire types are jealous of. I think a few others score Dig though.
@@ShiningJudgment666 Ya true. Others can also learn Dig (Growlithe/Arcanine comes to mind immediately) but by the time you reach the ability to get more fire types (Without a hack of course) you'll most likely already have something else that could put the TM to use.
I remember I thought Charizard was so much better than my other pokemon because he was always a higher level than the rest and leveling quicker. When it was really my hyper-biased agenda using him way more than the rest because he was my favourite 😂 Loved him so much from the gen 1 days, and still do. Not because I thought he was better, but because he simply just had the coolest design to me as well as name, and easily the best arc of all pokemon the anime.
I picked Charizard about twice in my playthroughs of Red and Blue and it did okay. I had better luck with the other two starters. Charmander's line may look good but there was a price for all that beauty and power and it's the games matchups and its bad movepool. Charmander's line is a life lesson, while something may look good in theory and in appearance, it doesn't mean it is going to be effective all the time. This is where your teambuilding skills come into play because it needs help from teammates.
Screw Charizard, let's discuss why Poliwhirl which learns psychic moves evolves into a fricken fighting type?!! Poliwrath should've just lost its water typing and become psychic/fighting since the Poliwag line is meant to be a tadpole evolving to leave water..
@@pokerebels Probably thanks to the anime ep where Charizard loses to Poliwrath that got me thinking. Then Charizard learns to trust Ash and goes to beat a water fighting type with seismic toss and flamethrower instead of any flying attack. Far out Pokemon anime is so dumb haha
I have to say yes. He isnt as powerful as his trading card game counter part. I remember using charizard a few times on runs and i have to say he dont learn flamethrower until level 46 which is poor. Blastoise and venusaur are much better starters . Fire types are not even that important to have in gen 1 either when flying and ice types can beat all what a fire type can.
what iv'e learned about almost all Pokemon games is that water type Pokemon demolish every game! Although fire type is cooler, but unfortunately they are trash!
In a lot of ways I agree but Charizard is by far and away the best fire Pokemon in the game, it's not even close. Sure Blastoise is great, but Lapras is just as good. Venusaur is really good early but just grab a Bellsprout. When you fully evolve it that thing is a killer. Charizard is the hardest to train, but it is the least replaceable. Now you don't NEED a fire type but Charizard lets you just smoke through all the grass type and bug types then Charizard massive speed and attack and special attack lets you go against pretty much anything. Charizard is much better gen 3
Venusaur is probably better than Victreebell in a playthrough. It's bulkier and faster at the cost of some Attack and access to Stun Spore and Gen 1 Wrap and it does unfortunately have to wait until it has access to Gen 1 Sleep which is broken . The things that stop them are also similar. Fire types just got the short end of the starter type trio but honestly, they gave Charizard the most out of any Fire type. And yes, even Moltres which has great stats but no real movepool to use them effectively (at least it gets the strongest unboosted Special move in the game in STAB Fire Blast running off a base 125 Special stat and Hyper Beam, right? and can Pseudo Wrap trap with Agility and Fire Spin).
I like blastoise better but the only thing I didn't like with red and blue is when you use Squirtle it had tackle instead of scratch ➕️ your rival had Gyarados which I didn't like so after a while I realized I'm going to start the game with Charmander so I like both of them to be exact but if I was playing with the gameplay I would choose Charmander just because of your rival LOL
I used to get really annoyed with the anime too as Charizard was always defiant and then Ash just left him at summer camp with all the other Charizard.
Are Charmader - Charmeleon and Charizard designs cool? Yes! Is good though? Nope! The reason is simple is a Fire Type and Fire Types in Gen 1 are bad. However it feels like you play pokemon on hardcore mode since you struggle against Broke, Misty, Blane, Lorelei, Agatha and Lance. Don't even mention the struggle against every water type trainer in the region, also out of 3 starters Charizard is a Glass Cannon which means if it's not strong enough to beat certain NPC's you will be in despair regreting "not wasting time" training it more. Which means you kinda have to fight the majority of the trainers Region to pass first try against Gym Leaders & the Elite 4.
Because its weak against the first 2 gyms and against Blaine its nearly useful its more UNDER rated in GEN 1 the best starter of the 3 IMHO is almost always going to be Bulbasaur in the Red/Blue games including its Gen 3 remake.
