    Have to respect that packaging quality at 00:59. It’s strange looking back at the roots of this series, especially having only gotten into the spiritual successor, Wargroove.
    Also, having just played a tabletop skirmish game involving Funkopop figures of The Golden Girls, Sanrio missed an opportunity in relegating their staple of characters to sideline NPCs.
    I am ALL IN for that next episode. :D

    Really excited to see some more english language information on these titles.
    You mentioned advance wars came out on September 10th, 2001, and interestingly, the game was set to come out later in Japan. Because of this, the Japanese did not see a release of the first advance wars game until it came out as a dual pack with the second game.
    Really sad this franchise has always played second banana to Fire Emblem. As much as I love that series, that does not mean that Advance Wars should be left in the dust.

    • @JeremyParish

      Yeah, it's still wild to me that Wars took 12 years to reach the U.S., and once it did, the first game to come here didn't ship back in Japan for a couple of years after that. And then there was the whole Battalion Wars thing. What a weird, messy series.

    • @johnathanbarnes8639
      @johnathanbarnes8639 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That warrants a full analysis given how, unlike most of the Poke Clones which were one and done, this started a whole sub franchise, that still continues to this day, though thankfully, the original Dragon Warrior Monsters (''Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry no Wonderland'') was a singular entry. Heck, a future installment, which will have Erik from Dragon Quest XI as the likely protagonist, is presumably in the works. That being said, we're gonna wait a while; since he's going by North American release date for games that did make it to the West, we're going to go through some crud.

      I'm deep in FE:TH and I'd easily describe it as being a kinetic novel / school life simulator hybrid which also features a surprisingly deep tactics minigame. I mean, in terms of hours spent in different kinds of gameplay, there's not even any question about where the focus is.

    • @Gemini476
      @Gemini476 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Much like Persona, it began as one genre and then had one really huge game that changed how future games would look. Old-school Fire Emblem doesn't really have the romance aspect, that's (mostly) just from the DS game Fire Emblem: Awakening onwards.
      The earlier Fire Emblems weren't huge sellers in the west, and they only got localized from 6 onward.

Also props for no narration during 'next episode' ... as if it needs any introduction, haha!!

  • @Dunkelschloss

    If I remember correctly Game Boy Wars 3 had a better presentation. Like then you captured a Building, they would show your troops storming in and firing inside it. Even Advance Wars had only the little 'Jumping on building' visiulisation. And it might have also had the motorcycle troops, they brought back in Dark Conflict.

    • @MasterKnightDH
      @MasterKnightDH 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That it did. There was actual visualization for utility-related stuff as a whole. The gameplay itself also managed sound appeal, with the Work Car being a *GREAT* idea for competitive play due to being an economy unit that's considerably more expensive than the Grunts but with more long-term importance and still having clear vulnerability to Anti-Air Tanks particularly, the end result being one of the biggest contributing factors to how fast and refined snowballing manages to be in GBW3.
      Nintendo Wars successors, spiritual or otherwise, should *REALLY* look into GBW3 for good ideas, even if the absolute misfires need to be watched out for.

  • @TotalHenshin
    @TotalHenshin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm eager to see what Jeremy has to say about GBW3 and its one-time material mechanic.

    • @MasterKnightDH
      @MasterKnightDH 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah yeah. Materials. I can point out how a first time player coming from AW would think about it:
      Player: Okay. Map 1 on Beginner Mode. Looks like I need to use the HQ to build units. No problem. Building Infantry to capture the enemy HQ. ...okay. Now to build another Infantry. ...wait, I can't build an Infantry? But I have the money for it. ....oh, I need "M" too. That's curious.
      The intent of the Materials mechanic is actually made obvious by the smaller gaps in Materials price tags and the involvement of Factories: preventing unit headcount bloat in earlygame. It's far easier to get Gold because Cities are commonplace, on top of any Airports and Harbors being involved, but the Materials, since they'll only come from Factories, are going to be a commodity in early game, before when the Work Cars get it to explode to where the Materials incomes would outpace standard deployment. Suddenly, those mid value units have comparable numbers to the low value junk, which alone makes the tech units more viable when they're less likely to get bludgeoned for free by artillery support easily protected by a bunch of rejects.
      I should talk about the Work Car, because that is one of the game's better ideas, which there is no short supply of, but the Work Car stands out. Terrain alterations, especially bridge building (which is even the first concept of the Work Car that's taught in Beginner Mode, how convenient), are welcome as long as they aren't broken, which they aren't when they still require the Work Car and resupplying its Materials requires.....Materials. Of course, the star attraction is their ability to strengthen properties. When a property gets strengthened by the Work Car, besides taking longer to Capture, it provides faster repairs and more income. The income is the selling point, of course, because that allows the Work Car to pay for itself and then some. It's a compliment to Materials keeping unit count low in early game, as the increased incomes in mid game and late game further increases the number of mid value units before the low value units can get a chance to blow up on some Materials spike. The added repairs also incentivizes potentially risking a Work Car on developing a property close to the frontlines to speed up repairs on the main combatants, made even more useful when the game wanting to encourage unit variety means the Linkup Command is not as useful for having the units taking heat be fresh. Of course, if a player plays possum too much, the Work Car is quite capable of rewarding map control with added flanking and siege support to punish that.
      Equally beneficial to the game's balance, is the Work Car's relationship to snowballing as a whole. The Work Car gets an auxiliary MG for discouraging any pesky car units wanting to pull harassment, which helps keep first blood from deciding too much when deploying a Work Car for added income to fight back with. At the same time, its combat ability is objectively worse than the Humvee, which is still less expensive, by having the same combat stats except for very much worse mobility AND a lack of an anti-armor weapon. This is where the more evened out defensive typing of ground units _REALLY_ pays off, more than with the dynamics of the Buggy and Humvee, because Lite Land units would want to be watchful of what they do against Work Cars, but Armor units aren't going to care outside escort involvement when they're not taking counterdamage.
      What really tips the snowballing relationship point for the Work Car into clear finesse, however, is the Anti-Air Tank matchup: the Anti-Air Tank at full health, which it should be, 1HKOs non-leveled up Work Cars on _ANY VALID TERRAIN OTHER THAN THE HEADQUARTERS._ While the Work Car can gain level ups for defense boosts off of its utility tasks, this isn't going to be useful for the newly deployed ones, and the Work Car needs multiple level ups to even survive a non-leveled up Anti-Air Tank shot when on a property, so this prevents a chance of recovery once the utility units at base are being shot at by the secondary combat stuff. The bigger point about healthy design because of the Anti-Air Tank specifically being useful for 1HKOing the Work Car, is that Armor units that can blunt the Anti-Air Tank have flow because of both the Buggy and, of course, the Work Car, and that also leads into units with anti-armor capability that can give the Anti-Air Tank fits being useful with their own flow. Summary? The game knows you're objectively winning once you have your Anti-Air Tanks run around rampaging in enough safety, and makes sure there's clear reward for as much. (1HKOing max level Grunts on HQs is welcome convenience too, but only does so much no matter how cathartic it is.)
      I think Materials could still help in balance ideas for a Nintendo Wars Spiritual Successor, but not quite as much as the Work Car does.

    I'll always have a massive soft spot for Nobunaga's Ambition Gameboy (It was the first Gameboy game my parents bought me after accidentally throwing out my entire collection during a move excepet for the new game I bought for the move. That new game was Turn and Burn F-14 Dogfight simulator, AKA my least favorite game of all time.) But I would have loved to get this, and loved to have gotten the NES and SNES games even more. In fact Advance Wars was my first GBA game, and even before that I played my best friend's copy competitively against him when not working on projects in TV production class.

    You know what strikes me as weird about the Gameboy Wars games? The tiles are still square like in Famicom Wars and Advance Wars, but they don't line up into an even grid, so each tile is adjacent to 6 other tiles rather than 4. Not sure why they did that (or why they didn't just switch to hexes) but I bet it plays merry hell with judging ranges across diagonals.

    • @JeremyParish
      @JeremyParish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, when you put it that way, it strikes me as a compromise between laying down a proper hex-based system and working within the constraints of a system that stores data as 8x8 squares. Hex graphics would be a pain to manage on GB, but staggering 2x2-tile squares keeps memory management tidy while still allowing six facings per grid space.

    • @ArcaneAzmadi
      @ArcaneAzmadi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeremyParish That makes sense, from a technical standpoint. But I still don't get why they'd deviate from a plain square grid for only these entries in the first place.

    Jeremy sometimes I wish you could look at modern games too, as if you like the Wars series I'm sure you'd like Wargroove for Switch. It's basically Advance Wars, just with a medieval setting. It's one of the best homage games I've ever seen. Anyone who wants basically "Switch Wars" should look into Wargroove. The switch actually has tons of great strategy games, even the Mario + Rabbids game is pretty damn amazing.
