We are binge watching Appalachian Outlaws on History on Demand. It’s about digging ginseng in the Appalachian Mountains. Ya gotta check it out. Your video brings back memories of my Dad drying ginseng in the back window of his car. Enjoyed your video!!!
Great advice. I don't only agree with your conversation advice. But I ordered 1,000 seeds. I'm planting those along with the berries I find. I've harvested 20 roots this year for my personal use. And planted all those berries along with a bunch more. Thank you.
It's good to wait until it's a 3 prong. He breaks them off so people don't dig up the 2 prong. It could produce a few more plants before it turns into a 3
Besides snakes u gotta watch for yellow jackets they nest in the ground an if u step on the nest or maybe dig close to it they will actually chase u by the dozens use caution when in the mountains
I work in construction and getting a bit older lol but i know my shit so is there any work like that up in the mountains? Im hoping ot get some land in the Blue Ridge area?
Being from Oregon me seeing the Appalachian mountains really makes me want to pack up and move!! I like how you can actually walk around in the woods. Over here in Oregon there’s blackberries everywhere. Ur lucky
Hey brother i realize your video is a few years old but i am in a situation that i may have to rely on things like Ginseng harvesting to eat...... Is this really a viable way to pay a few bills the year? I will have a small parcel of land in West Virginia soon and will need some sort of income. I know there isnt a lot of work in WV but its been a dream of mine to live in the Mts a bit off grid but not too bit yano. Since it looks as though my marriage may fall apart i am hoping to find some land and put a trailer or cabin on it to die in, very soon? lol So seriously can a person make enough to almost live off of if they put in the time?
Ok i lied....not last question lol I was wondering what you guys do for a living where your at? What type of work if any is there in West Virginia if thats where your from that is? lol
Not to sound critical but you need a stabilizer or something, it is making me dizzy to watch this because the cameras moving around so much and why can't people get a close-up of what the leaves look like? I am new to this and I want to make sure I know what I'm looking for. I am glad that you are mentioning conservation of the plant oh, that is very important, thank you.
Some parts of West Virginia have been just about dug clean out of ginseng. Pure GREED. It's nice to see you are not digging every single plant like some people do.
I don't recommend shooting snakes. Theres never a situation where a snake is coming after you. Just simply step away and leave it alone. And just like you said, I've never had an animal attack me in the woods. Hornets and yellowjackets are my main concern in the woods
You've never encountered a water moccasin. Mean, just mean. They WILL chase you and they are fast enough to catch you if you don't have a good lead. Doesn't happen on every occasion but enough times that if you walk where they might be you're gonna wanna gun.
Good advice. You will occasionally find a plant with 2 prongs and that 2 prong will be older and larger than the 4 prong next to it. But it takes time in the woods to know the difference.
I will P.S. this message of course..... i wont get greedy and im talking about responsible harvesting my self. But i have to figure out a way to suppliment my SSI if i plan to survive once i move? My SSI will be crap as my wife has been the bread winner for the last 10yrs of our 21yr marriage. Basically if we do finally break up it will be me ,my clothes a few rifles and my truck! :>/ I let her put me in a corner with all the house and everything else! Frankly im lucky i may end up with about 1/2 of whats left from the sale of "my" house! I knew when i sold it i was making the biggest mistake of my life but t hats what love gets you! You dont think of a bad future and do dumb shit! lol
When you talked about bringing a gun where you suggesting to have the gun to shoot rattlesnakes and coyotes etc? Not trying to step on anyone's toes but if you go deep into the woods and kill any animals that aren't eaten or were attacking you I would tell that person to reevaluate things. I true outdoorsman doesn't have fear but instead has respect and understanding. Rattlesnakes don't attack so all you have to do is simply walk around it lol. Killing a rattlesnake does absolutely nothing to protect anyone. I am directing this to anyone reading and Noone in particular. When it comes to any animal you may have a fear of just educate yourself about that species and help yourself. In the US only about 5-6 people die from snake bites and most of the time it is because there were other underlying health problems. That's 5-6 people out of 330,000,000....I wouldn't recommend a gun for a snake because all that does is further the decline of another vital species.
A true outdoors man would shit his self if a bear started attacking him. The gun isn't about fear it's about protection. No matter how much peace and love you give a wild animal, they are still wild, if they want to attack, you are virtually fucked.
Smh don't be greedy and you paid for a car lmao 🤣 how much trespassing and sneaking around do you do actually? is that why you carry a pistol cause coyotes and bears aren't going to mess with you but landowners might.
Some states possession of wild ginseng is illegal. Why? Because it has medicinal properties and it can bring in big bucks. If the government can’t get their hands in the pot they make it illegal. That’s the only reason it’s illegal. Money.

great video! thanks for all the useful info
Why break the leaves off the two prong? Wouldn’t that reduce the amount of root growth for the rest of the season?
It's good to wait until it's a 3 prong. He breaks them off so people don't dig up the 2 prong. It could produce a few more plants before it turns into a 3
It's collected in the fall right? End of the season anyhow.
Very nice to see a ky boy being responsible with our natural resources!
Dope video bro I shared this out on my community tab much love
Besides snakes u gotta watch for yellow jackets they nest in the ground an if u step on the nest or maybe dig close to it they will actually chase u by the dozens use caution when in the mountains
me and my buddy got plans to go digging once season opens we already scouted out a few honey holes
By the way where is it do you look for ginseng? Im sure its gotta state land right? Private land you ould need permission wouldnt you?
Now if ou end up on a plant that has all its barries and plant them ,will they all grow? Of course im still only ast10:20 of the video? lol
you kept saying the blood root isnt worth much but if theres nothing else to pick what is it worth? I mean if you gotta buy bread to eat yano?
And do you keep the sites you find it at?? like ping them on your phone so you can go back the following year to pick the same area?
I work in construction and getting a bit older lol but i know my shit so is there any work like that up in the mountains? Im hoping ot get some land in the Blue Ridge area?

nah crackheads all around 😂
Enjoy the ticks , chiggers, oak mights , vipers and locals who cant speak a work of english. 😂
So if you break off the plant, the whole plant grows back larger the following season?
Yes. It’s the root it grows back from.
@@justinkk2005 awesome ty. Does it take a few years for like a 4 pronger to fully develop again if you break it off?

I've got a bunch I've collected over the years of course it's dry 😅 can you send me info on a buyer
Around how much would that first little root bring u
Ok i lied....not last question lol I was wondering what you guys do for a living where your at? What type of work if any is there in West Virginia if thats where your from that is? lol
I'm just learning what is the plant that is bigger but looks alot like it...
Do deer eat the berries?
Yes, but they cant digest them so you can find ginseng along deer trails

last question....do you ever go out alone hunting ginseng? I would be as i dont know anyone in WV?lol
i want to find some wild grown Ginseng grown local to tennessee ? for my own personal use anyone have any for sale ?
I thought I found a couple plants one time it was actually pignut hickory the leaves look close with a woody stem.

Are you selling?
I have had bears come at me popping it's teeth. Just don't run .stand your ground. Yes I do carry a pistol.10mm.
Sometimes harvesters trade this directly for hard narcotics- skipping the cash completely.
It’s illegal too dig out of season but strip mining can wipe it out forever
Good to meet ya👊

🤔Hmmm!! Wonder who digs it outta season?🤔. 🤣 great vid man
Yee
You dug up and exposed the seeds already dropped. Good one 😢
It won’t hurt them. They’re covered in leaves during the fall anyways.
