    I sincerely hope this route does well and plenty of people use it.. we need this airport to pay its way as the council can not afford these subsidies. Our airport may be small but it is very user friendly. All the staff including my son are so very friendly. We look forward to record numbers using our lovely airport and enjoying a real Irish welcome to our beautiful city.

    Once again, great report Paul. I must admit I've really begun to look forward to your videos, especially these little local route gems that the majority of your viewers may never get to experience themselves. This report was done in record time as well.. wow. Thank you for always having the prefect balance of video length and interesting content on ground and in the air, as well as your usual excellent editing - it's much appreciated and enjoyed, and so much more personal that we get to see more of you as host. Was the cider and chocolate bar to be a regular feature or just something special for the inauguration? If regular, count me in as a fan! One up on food-less BA for sure.

    Hi Paul, I worked for bmi mainline for 20 years before BA bought them and grabbed the slots and aircraft and laid off all the staff. Good memories and I remember flying to CDG/AMS/BRU on the E145 from EMA. Great little commuter aircraft. Shame the routes were closed down as nobody flies to these 3 main European hubs from EMA anymore. Used to be great for connecting to transatlantic flights.

      Agree and I don't care so much about their awards. The pax reviews are pretty dire and make a good read - how BA can still pretend they get positive feedback is a mystery... fake news or did they hire comical Ali?? The recent changes to the BAEC (like free seat selection on Basic fares) could be a signal that the penny has dropped - still too little after months of lower standards.

    I'm guessing BMI has a monopoly on this route if Ryanair pulled out.When one airline dominates a route,it can charge just about what it wants to,even with almost a 4 million pound subsidy.Did you connect for someplace else?

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jason Moors BMI are the only operator on this route, yes. But a quick glance shows fares aren't really higher than, say BA flying from Belfast City. Basically the politics of the area mean BMI won't get away with milking the clientele too much, I don't think! I didn't connect anywhere else.

    Seeing as BA owns BMI, they ought to make BMI the low cost carrier they're turning BA into. Repaint the current A320 fleet into BMI colours, and offer a no frills experience. Rather than damaging their brand and legacy by out-ryanairing Ryanair! Allow BA to focus on long haul, improving their fleet and quality, whilst BMI does most of the European short haul. I'm fairly convinced BA is going down the drain in terms of service :/ which is a real pity, they're be absolutely no incentive to fly BA anymore. Christ, even BMI does complementary snacks :(

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      HMSDaring1 BA owns BMI? Not sure that's right! BA are still rubbish on short haul though, agreed.

    • @HMSDaring1
      @HMSDaring1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paul's Trip Reports I'm certain IAG (BA's parent company) acquired BMI back in 2012. Hence why some of BA's aircraft (A320's are ex BMI's deliveries). Yeah, BA short haul is a bit of a running joke at the moment, their direction has been lost. They're stuck between becoming a low cost carrier trying to compete with the likes of Easyjet and Ryanair and being a legacy airline.

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +HMSDaring1 Ah you mean the old mainline BMI. Yes. BMI Regional is separate of course. I reckon they will brand short haul routes from Gatwick as BA Express and effectively commit suicide in the process. They're not a LCC, never will be, and don't have the expertise. LCCs can be great but at least you understand their whole purpose, it's cheap and cheerful. Not disingenuous "quality carrier" guff you get from BA. Dispense with the Flower Duet and get some cheesy pop like Norwegian. That's what the service is now.

    • @jfwfreo
      @jfwfreo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      IAG seems to want BA to be a competitor with Ryanair and Easyjet when they should be competing with Lufthansa and Air France-KLM.

    I'm using this route in the summer so thanks for the report so I know what to expect. Hope it does survive, we should be looking to expand domestic UK flights, we are woeful compared to a lot of advanced countries

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The UK has a huge number of domestic air routes for a country of its geographical size (and bear in mind the geography of the UK is not particularly challenging for land transport). We have something like 50 or 60 passenger airports.
      Remember that a lot of “advanced countries” are either enormous or have challenging physical geography making land transport inefficient.

    • @Rmcaw
      @Rmcaw 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree Paul, but countries such as Denmark and New Zealand both have very good domestic flight network in rural areas . I know that they both have unique geography and they could have some subsidies but considering their population sizes and GDP it's interesting that they can sustain so many routes. I know it isn't a simple as I make it out to be and there is many complex issues but I feel government could do more to make flying a better option and perhaps the airports need to do more as well. Another problem is people want to fly into LHR (like I would want to see) from their local but there isn't the capacity. roll on 3rd runway!

    I go past City of Derry on the train when I get the Londonderry/Derry to Belfast train as the tracks are near the approach end of the runway

      The control tower at City of Derry can actually stop trains on the line when an aircraft is landing at that end of the runway - a little known fact :-)

      It’s a charter service not a scheduled airline, so you can’t book this without buying the £500 holiday as well.

    I went to Derry last year. I felt it was a good experience but not my #1 place for the following reasons.
    1. The tour bus only had 7 stops
    2. I felt there was not enough to keep me occupied for the 36 hours I was there.
    3. Other than the wall around the city there is a guildhall with an interesting exhibition and 2 (I think, maybe 3) shopping centres on a hill and a bridge.
    4. The weather was horrific because Derry is so exposed!

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Derry is the most interesting city on the island of Ireland. Remember it’s less than a third the size of Newcastle - and about the same size as the town Hastings in Kent.
      Derry’s attraction is its very long narrative of political, social, military and religious history, and if this is not your thing, you’d be wasting your time. It’s a unique place. I despair that someone went to Derry and said all they saw was the Guildhall, a wall, a bridge and some shopping centres!
      Didn’t you visit the Siege Museum, or the Museum of Free Derry? Bloody Sunday Memorial? Or the little Presbyterian church on the walls? Or take in the Bogside murals? The city cemetery (to be fair I recommend a local explain some of the graves and their significance)? Did you walk down the Fountain area?

      Paul's Trip Reports I had 36 hours in Northern Ireland when I went, I flew to BFS and I had to get to Derry from there. I also was staying in the Premier Inn which is hardly in Derry-this didn’t help-while I was there in Derry for about 36 hours I only had very limited time in Derry itself because the last of the hourly bus to the hotel was at 6pm and the weather was horrific, also I travelled with my grandparents, my grandmother is not in the best of health has mobility issues and the hilliness of Derry and the horrific weather made the visit a challenge. I visited the Catholic cathedral as I come from a Catholic family, U visited the different shopping centres and the Guildhall which was interesting and I did the tour bus which I didn’t get off because of the poor weather

      Paul's Trip Reports I shall. What I would say is somewhere like Bangor is more to my taste. I’m off to Belfast in 18 days to try out Eastern Airways but I’m only in Belfast for the day. I would if I go back definitely visit the Bogside

      Dublin and Belfast are modern developed cities they don't really have the ancient history Derry has.
