- I am giving a monthly Zoom talk to the residents at @antai_ji . This year's topic is Dogen's chapter on the "Arousal of Bodhimind" from his later 12-fascicle Shobogenzo. I should've really got him when he said "pornography and masturbation aren't at all malignant." But I didn't get him then. I got him when he posted on "comparative religion." That's when I got the gist.
The reason the Buddha introduced this element of humor is that Buddhism is child-friendly or should be. :)

Teologos does the very same drill at Athos. Weird, yet some people spend time dwelling on things they actually ridicule within their own minds. Yeah, ok. They don't know better.
So he's disrespecting the Three Treasures. The minute he stops disrespecting them, he's back in his usual, perhaps thriving even.
No you cannot. It's a monastic oath. Scary bad. Some people may do it accidentally, and it's still bad Karma; he trained himself to do it on purpose.

Why is Dogen such a messiah figure??!! Why are we not looking at the teachings of others in our lineage and outside of it in the wider Zen/Chan family? Afterwards, other than Sawaki/Uchiyama/Okumura/Muho?! I truly do not understand. There is so much to be had from the teachings of Yunmen, Linji, Hunagbo, Rujing, Foyan, Fayan, Dahui....
20 years I'm so sick of DOGEN DOGEN DOGEN.
