You’re correct. Matt (in the white jacket) is the “new guy” who’s been around since 2017. He’ll always be the new guy as long as no one else leaves. I’ve said many silent prayers to ensure that never happens 😊. Great reaction, as usual - thanks for coming back to them again!

@@bignickofficial Sorry, but no audio set up, no matter the receiver, the equalizer, or speaker setup, can match the pure immersive sound of headphones. You'll understand when you try them. Relisten to this song with good headphones, there is a difference. Even if you can hear and feel every note with regular setup, headphones is just a different experience. The difference in driving a Maserati, or a Panda.

Tall blond guy is Scott Hoying-Baritone; the girl is Kirsten Maldonado-Mezzo-Soprano; the guy with the hat is Mitch Grassi; Counter-Tenor; the guy in the white jacket is new singer Matt Sallee-Basso Profundo; and Kevin Olusola-Tenor, Beatboxer, Cellist, and Cellist beatboxer. Scott, Kirsten, and Mitch went to high school together in Arlinton, TX (between Dallas & Ft Worth, TX. After graduation, they went to different colleges to major in music. They got together for a competion called "Sing-Off," but groups needed to have 5 musicians, that's when they were referred the other two, Kevin, nd the original Basso-Profundo, Avi Kaplan.

Great reaction! A pentatonic (stylized as Pentatonix) scale is 5 notes, and PTX has the voices and ranges to cover many octaves of that scale. It's their arrangements that sets them apart. You have a deep PTX rabbit hole to discover. I look forward to more PTX reactions

    Pentatonix
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
    The founding members are:-
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);

Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”.
    Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on TH-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his TH-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on TH-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on TH-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group.
If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently.
After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win.
Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET!
They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star!
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!!
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to.
2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album.
3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

The Sound of Silence," originally "The Sounds of Silence," is a song by the American music duo Simon & Garfunkel, and was written by Paul Simon. The duo's studio audition of the song led to a record deal with Columbia Records, and the original acoustic version was recorded in March 1964 at Columbia Studios in New York City for their debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. Released on October 19, 1964, the album was a commercial failure and led to the duo disbanding; Simon returned to England, and Art Garfunkel to his studies at Columbia University. In 1965, the song began to attract airplay at radio stations in Boston and throughout Florida. The growing airplay led Tom Wilson, the song's producer, to remix the track, overdubbing electric instruments and drums. This remixed version was released as a single in September 1965. Simon & Garfunkel were not informed of the song's remix until after its release.Wikipedia😊

The original PTX was Scott (your "lead singer), Kirstie and Mitch. Before the 2011 Sing Off US competition, they added Kevin Olusola (beat boxer) and Avi Kaplan (bass) Avi left in 2017 due to personal reasons. He was replaced by Matt Sallee in 2017 (whom he knew, actually, from other a capella association). Matt is a great fit with the group "and they lived happily every after!"

Avi was the original Bass singer, he left in 2017 and Matt Sallee joined the same year. Scott Hoying is the tall blonde lead singer, Then of course Mitch Grassi , Kirsten Maldonado is the female of course. And Kevin Olusola is the beat boxer. Yes Scott, Mitch, Kirsten and Kevin are the original members. Actually Scott, Mitch & Kirsten all grew up together in Arlington, Texas. Kevin the beat boxer was at Yale getting his Pre-Med degree before joining them he is known for Cello Boxing. He is also a classically trained Cellist, he also speaks fluent Mandarin.

You got it right there at the end. The four to the right are all original members. White jacket guy is bass Matt Sallee, he replaced bass Avi Kaplan, bearded long hair guy, in 2017. That has been the only change in the line-up. Although they change their looks quite often, it’s always Kirstie and it’s always Mitch. Scott, the tall white guy, winds up in the middle of the pack a lot because he’s 6’3” and they look lopsided when he’s anywhere else. He, Mitch and Kirstie (rhymes with “thirsty”) trade off singing lead. There’s a behind-the-scenes mini-doc called Recording Evergreen that shows the pains they take with the vocals in the studio and how their sound comes together. I enjoyed your reaction very much, thanks! Peace from Ohio …

Every one of the six people that have sung with them (first Avi and now Matt as the bass. The rest of the group is the same the whole way through) sports a vocal range of at least five octaves. I am versatile (capable of tenor through a middle bass passing through the entire baritone scale), and I only have three and a half octaves (perhaps slightly more but not much) if that gives you an idea. The girl is Kirsten or Kirstie. She is an alto through mezzo-soprano and into the sopranos. Mitch, of course, is the guy with the high voice, the one that Mitch-slapped you to great advantage. He is referred to as a countertenor, but he can do from tenor through countertenor to a boy soprano without moving into his head voice. The first guy is named Scott. He is their baritone and secondary bass. This means that if their bass is doing the lead line, Scott drops down to cover the bass line. He can go from bass through baritone and through the tenor range. He also has a quality falsetto. Kevin, the guy on the far right when you look at their faces, the dark longcoat, is their beatboxer and a natural tenor that can sing, at need, from high baritone throughout the tenor ranges, and he has a spectacular falsetto, perhaps the best one in the group. The guy on the left in the white longcoat is Matt. He is their normal bass. His range is from basso profundo (almost) through the tenors and can also provide falsetto. Another thing. Kirstie is by far their best belter, although Scott is no slouch at it. They can all belt if needed, but Scott and Kirstie are the best at it. Does any of this help at all?

Scott (tall blonde guy), Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty), and Mitch knew each other in high school and sang as a trio. When they were 19 years old, they decided to try out for the TV show The Sing Off, an accappello competition (you can see the episodes on youtube.) They needed a bass and a beatboxer. Avi joined, and then they found Kevin, the Beatboxer on TH-cam. Kevin had just graduated from college with a premed degree. Avi left the group in 2017, and Matt came on as the new bass.

Others have covered who sings what and such in a good way, so I will just say this, Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin have known each other and sang together in school choirs, and community theatre since about the 8th grade (two of them met, and then met the other like a year later) but they all grew up living like 3 houses away from each other, that is one reason they are so good together, they've been together for so long, especially during those years when voices were being finalized, and they learned to just match each other.

They got their start on a show called The Sing Off. Season 3.
All if their performances are available.
The deal was, if they won. They would ger $200,000 and a recording contract.
    Spoiler Alert
They won, moved fro Texas to LA and two weeks later the company dropped them.
    Saying that they weren't marketable.
Rhey took the money and started making TH-cam videos.
The rest, as they say.... Is history.
They have well over 200 videos. Including a MASSIVE amount of Christmas music.
I want to TOTAL agree with the previous comment.
You REALLY can't HEAR ALL of their amazing intricacies AND vocals....without at least ear buds.
With Pentatonix, it really IS a must.

Love your reaction. Scott (tall, blonde guy) is actually more of a baritone (mid-range male voice). But he has a real big range and covers the bass line when Matt (or Avi previously) sings the melody. Matt (black guy in white- bass singer) replaced Avi (basso profundo) a few years ago (2017??). Mitch is a counter tenor and Kirsten is a mezzo soprano. Kevin (beat boxer) has a high clear tenor voice. From what I understand, Mitch, Kirsten, and Scott went to high school together in Texas. They competed on a singing show (the Sing-Off) and added Kevin as a beat boxer and Avi as the bass to fill out the group. That is Pentatonix in a nutshell.

One hundred percent agree with you that they have the harmony that nobody else have. There are other ocapella groups out there such as voiceplay, home free, to name a few. And they are all very good and I'm not taking anything away from them and their talent. , but to me p t x is on a level above all of them. And of course they were 1st and they were the 1st ones to make acapella back into the mainstream. If it ever was mainstream, And by far the most decorated . There isn't a genre that they can't tackle and excel at either.

    Nice reaction!!
    Okay...
Scott Hoying ( the guy in the jacket you want) is a baritone with a massive vocal range ( actually they all have at least a 5 octave range...and Mitch, Kirstie and Scott all have 6 octave). Scott takes on the bass while the bass sings a verse or lead.
Mitch Grassi is a natural countertenor and a chameleon...and possibly an alien with his sweet high notes
Kirstin (Kirstie) Maldonado is a mezzo soprano and a great belter! She and Mitch can match each other for the high notes and sometimes it's difficult to tell them apart.
Matt Sallee ( in the white jacket) is the new bass (Avi Kaplan left in 2017 and Matt joined 6 months later). His warm tones are really wonderful.
Kevin Olusola is the beatboxer+. He's kind of a genius. He also plays sax and cello both at concert levels... and has done at Carnegie Hall when he was in his late teens. He graduated Pre-Med at Yale just before joining PTX in the Sing-Off where the group began. He also speaks several languages including Mandarin. Oh...and Kevin does sing. He has a lovely tenor voice and joins in with backing vocals when not actively beatboxing.

Pentatonix History…..composed by Alan Freeman updated by Perry Stevenson
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
    The founding members are:-
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
    Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an acappella group could sell records.
But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
The 3 Grammys they’ve won include….(1)Daft Punk for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella……(2)Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella….(3) Jolene w/Dolly Parton for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.
They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album “Evergreen” for Best Traditional Vocal Album. They were also nominated for a 5th Grammy award for their album “Holidays Around The World” for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only acapella group with a star!
UPDATE: Pentatonix has also done 9 intros for Thursday Night Football based on their original song “sing”. Links for 3 of them are th-cam.com/video/HrruJptmbKU/w-d-xo.html and youtu.be/zTUSB4iw and TIIth-cam.com/video/e2pvITc9a3U/w-d-xo.html

UPDATE: They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23.
Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET!
It is an often debated subject among the Pentaholics as to just how soon we introduce the "Beginners Guide" as we don't want to overdo the introduction. This is a compilation of snips of a whole load of songs which PTX have released. It highlights each member with some of their solos and then a brief history in video. It is quite long - 14+ minutes and is a little dated now (Feb 2020) but is a good watch th-cam.com/video/lDxIfwfCmQE/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUdYmVnaW5uZXJzIGd1aWRlIHRvIHBlbnRhdG9uaXg%3D.
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong “Pentaholics” will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha Ha!!
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used auto-tune as an effect - so they had to.
2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album.
3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

The original bass in Pentatonix is Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan. Avi is another lyric bass. He's an operatically trained basso profundo - his lowest notes actually HAVE blown out speakers in live performance - but his range extends well into the tenor range. He left in 2017 for personal reasons but has since gone on to have a very successful solo career; you can find his TH-cam channel by searching on "Avi Kaplan." I strongly recommend subscribing.
Note: Avi is the ONLY member who has ever left Pentatonix. But Mitch and Kirstie are chameleons. They change their hair color and style. Kirstie has had some work done on her lips. Mitch's facial hair style changes. For a while his weight tended to yo-yo. Kirstie's figure is more mature now (she was just 19 when Pentatonix began in 2011). So people frequently think they see someone new in Pentatonix when it's really Mitch or Kirstie. Always wait until you hear them sing; their voices don't lie.

Kevin is the beat boxer/percussionist; however, he also sings like an angel. He sings on 'Mary did you know', which is my fav by these guys, as a matter of fact. Kirstin is the beautiful gal who can make herself look like a totally different person in every video. Matt is in the white jacket. He replaced Avi, who sings on 'Hallelujah'. Avi went solo. Mitch, Scott & Kirstin went to school together & have been singing together for years. They will blow your mind on 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.

You should be informed that this isn't a live performance; it's an official video. There may be a few official videos that actually are live performances, but this isn't one of them. What that means is that this was recorded in the studio and then they lip-synched in the video. The reason it looks so genuine is that the way they lip-synch is to actually sing the song while they're filming the video. This keeps them in proper time to the music they've already recorded and in synchronization with each other, and it means that all of their movements are genuine. Their entire mouths and throats move properly. They take a breath when they would normally take a breath. They move their bodies in the ways that most support the notes they're singing. It all looks genuine, because it is genuine. But the audio was still recorded in the studio and processed accordingly.

    Pentatonix suggestions?
First, other commenters are right. Wear headphones. I don't care how good your speaker system is, headphones are better.
    • Think of a song that you used to like but don't any more, either because you've heard it too many times or because you've heard too many bad renditions of it. Type the name of that song into TH-cam's search engine and add either "PTX" or "Pentatonix." If they've -covered- upgraded it, that will find it. Once you've found a Pentatonix release of this song that you're tired of, listen to it. It will likely become your new favorite.
Oh, you want SPECIFIC recommendations? Okay.
    • "Bohemian Rhapsody"
    • "Imagine" (Be sure to watch the official video. The live version is just as good musically, as always with Pentatonix, but the official video has important video effects that can't be duplicated live.)
    • "Thank You"
    • "The Prayer"
    • "Daft Punk Medley" (their first Grammy winner)
    • "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" (their second Grammy winner)
    • "Jolene" (their third Grammy winner)
    • "O Come All Ye Faithful"
    • "Light in the Hallway"
    • "The Lucky Ones"
    • "Run to You"
    • "Todrick Hall - The Wizard of Ahhhs (ft. Pentatonix)" (This one comes with an inducement and two warnings. *The inducement* is that the copyright is owned by Todrick Hall, *not* RCA, Pentatonix's record label, and it's RCA that gets Pentatonix reactions blocked on TH-cam for copyright violations. Todrick seems to be more interested in publicity than in stomping on innocent reactors. You shouldn't need to do anything to obscure the video in order to keep your reaction up. *The first warning* is that "Wizard of Ahhhs" is an homage to "The Wizard of Oz," the original 1939 film starring Judy Garland. If you've never seen "The Wizard of Oz," "Wizard of Ahhhs" will make no sense, so make sure that you're familiar with the original first. *The second warning* is that "Wizard of Ahhhs" is almost seven minutes long. Be sure to set aside enough time for your reaction.)

    1. They don't have one lead singer. Pentatonix is a true ensemble group; they select the lead based on the person who is best for the song.
    2. I don't know where they get their clothing; I suspect that much of it is tailored specifically for them.
    3. The singers:
    • First verse: Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. Scott's vocal range begins somewhere in the middle of the bass range and extends well into the tenor range, with some good falsetto on top of that. I believe he has a range of five or six octaves.
    • Second verse: Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), contratenor. Mitch has a range of just over six octaves. He's able to move between his chest voice, his head voice, and his falsetto seemingly effortlessly. His voice has been described by many as "a once in a generation voice." Shawn Stockman, of Boyz II Men, described his voice as "one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard in my life." Most of us just call his voice "angelic" and leave it at that.
    • Third verse: Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), lyric bass. It's hard to say exactly what Matt's range is, because it seems to still be growing. When I heard them live at their concert in Denver on November 20, 2022 it sounded to me like his lowest note was true basso profundo low - low enough to blow out speakers if the singer isn't careful - and his highest note was near the upper end of the tenor range.
    • Fourth verse: Kirstin (also known as Kirstie, rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, the only woman in Pentatonix, mezzo soprano. Mezzo soprano is the lowest soprano range, just above alto. Kirstin is a mezzo soprano because that's the range she's most comfortable in, but her actual range extends from the low end of the alto range (though not contralto, which is more like a baritone range) through the high end of coloratura soprano, the highest soprano range. She can sing as high as Mitch. And she has some gorgeous whistle notes on top of all that.
    • The fifth member of Pentatonix is Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable), beatboxer extraordinaire. There actually are a few occasions when Kevin isn't too busy beatboxing to sing. Kevin is a tenor, though his voice occasionally dips into the top reaches of the baritone range, and he's known for the great beauty of his falsetto. Kevin has perfect pitch and is classically trained since childhood on piano, saxophone, and cello. When he was a teenager he performed twice at Carnegie Hall, once on the saxophone and once on the cello. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he refers to as "celloboxing." He has a pre-med degree from Yale, and had already been accepted to Yale Medical School before he joined Pentatonix and became a professional musician instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages: English, Spanish, German, French, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs the whole world seems brighter for it.

Yes the guy in the white jacket Matt is the only one that isn't an original member. He replaced Avi. Kevin the beat boxer also plays the cello in some songs. I think you should react to the video "Dancing on my own". It was after Avi left and before they found Matt. The cello playing sounds like a bass singer.

Eighties? That Simon and Garfunkel original is from way back in the 60s. Great reaction and thanks for posting!

Want harmony? Try Imagine. Or the song from Lion King. Pentatonix slays anything they do!
