  • I'm taking a look at the "curious linkages" between the epic Survival Horror Series and my favorite TV Show Twin Peaks. I think there are thematic elements in particular with the suffering of Alessa and the mysterious force in the woods that really give the series a link to David Lynch's surrealist masterpiece.

    David Lynch should be the one and only director allowed to make a Silent Hill movie.

      I'd love lynch to direct a silent hill
      It'd be great if he incorporated his silent rabbits into it,

    What's even more interesting is the out takes at the end of Silent Hill and the music reminds me of the cool, jazzy side of Lynch and Badalamenti.

    • @Spontamar
      @Spontamar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Akira Yamaoka, the sound director/composer of the game, considers Badalamenti his favorite composer after all.

    I'd also like to add that Hideo Kojima, the guy who was making the now cancelled Silent Hills, was a BIG fan of David Lynch and Twin Peaks, he was aiming to make Silent Hills a more Lynchian experience because of how well Lynch's style fits into a Silent Hill game. Judging by the demo, it was gonna be damn good...fuck Konami

    David Lynch's surreal material in general is very influential to silent hill. The main ones being Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Blue Velvet and eraserhead

    This is the first time I noticed someone talking about the similarity of Twin Peaks and Silent Hill. I always thought they had a lot of common with the athmosphere. Good analysis you have here. I always told my friends who liked Silent Hill games to watch Twin Peaks. But too bad none of them actually did :)

      Team Silent took ideas from American horror fiction and made them even darker and creepier. I'm still amazed that they took Stephen King, Twin Peaks, etc. and made them even scarier.

    Great video Michael Snow. Not sure if you know this, but the Nintendo developers actually were heavily influenced by Twin Peaks for The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening on Gameboy. There's actually developer notes talking about this in an old strategy guide. So the show did find its way over to Japan and even influenced some classic Nintendo games of the early 1990s as well.

    • @michaelsnow1
      @michaelsnow1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I hadn't heard that before. But that's amazing! The show was huge in Japan at the time and seemed to be influential in unexpected areas.

    9:06 the shapes we see of the Black Lodge entities are either shapes they assume to communicate with us or what our minds are able to comprehend. In FWWM there's a moment when the Grandson moves aside his mask to reveal a horrid, monkey-like shape. I'm guessing their true nature is closer to Lovecraftian aliens.

    Thank you for making this! It’s been bugging me what each reminded me of. I got into Twin Peaks later in life and as I was watching it I kept wondering what does this remind me of.... i agree with you 100% of this assessment of relating both Twin Peaks & Silent Hill.
    The music from Twin Peaks made me think of Silent Hill and Bob for some reason made me think of Pyramid Head

    The original Team Silent (I - IV) took huge influence from Twin Peaks and are admitting it. The composer Akira Yamaoka also has huge respect for Twin Peaks. I love those games to bits but my passion for the newer releases has dwindled since the start of PS3 times. Hard access of the story turned too much into easy access.
    The Silent Hill movie was an aberration of the game series to me. They tried to change it into some kind of christian / ghost town story. It was also more cheesy than creepy. Gave it 3/10.

      The dialogue in Silent Hill 1 was very Lynchian. Long pauses between lines etc.

    • @michaelsnow1
      @michaelsnow1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Those weird pregnant pauses adding a sense of foreboding or dreaminess had to have been taken from Lynch. They were so unsettling in the first game in particular They spoke like sleepwalkers under the spell of someone else and made it all seem unreal and the events unknowable.

      Side notion: Maria from SH2 was quite clearly modeled after Evelyn Marsh from James' side story. In terms of both appearance and expressions.

    I am just going to say, forget any changes made in the film and american made games. They are pretty much worthless. Some people don't understand why I hate the film so much, mainly because it's technically more well made than many other video game movies, but as the original Silent Hill is my favourite game of all time, the movie's mistakes were all the more noticeable. In this video, you pinpoint exactly what my main problems with the film were, the oversized cult and the ridiculousness of everything. The film is just a gore filled insult to the original masterpiece and it inspired the horrid american sequals. Sorry, I'm rambling. I'll shut up...

      Every time art goes from one medium to another there are changes. I actually liked the movie, it's kinda the first game minus some stuff and plus some other stuff. Revelations was basically silent hill 3 but altered. And they are both actually quite good. I mean, snow white the classic Disney cartoon is Very different from the book that inspired it, doesn't mean either version is bad. Just different. Shrug, just my two cents.
