What to Buy & What to Leave at Antique & Vintage Shops & Flea Markets!

  • What's good, what's really vintage, what's worth buying and what isn't? We're in the little town of Leitchfield, Kentucky today, meeting friends and shopping at the only antique & vintage sites for miles in any direction. I'm curious to see how they shop and what catches their eye...and what's available in two distinctly different types of selling venues.
    The best, worst and only old things in the area come here, so how do we decide what is worth our efforts to bring to our esteemed collectors?
    We start at the region's nicest (and only) pure antique and vintage shop, Country Squire, where a huge room full of pretty furniture, art glass, advertising, vintage kitchen and much more fills dealer displays and the owner's spaces.
    There's a lot to learn in this store! We use our black light to see a full spectrum of "uranium" glass, from century-plus old Vaseline yellow to 1930s green and more. Why does one jadeite bowl glow, and another doesn't? Why does that amberina orange glow? Did McCoy make Little Red Riding Hood? That and a quilt that gives a tutorial on block patterns are welcome and fun ways to get hands-on knowledge to inform our antiquing journey.
    After buying a fine 1950s canister set, we're on the way to the final hour of a semi-annual flea market near town. This is the other end of the spectrum, with large items are bargain priced during pack out, while the smalls are going fast. Can we find cool vintage our collectors will enjoy at a bargain price among the fodder, or are we too late? Come along and see how it all comes to a happy and chill ending!

    The quilt you were talking about is a called sampler block quilts and back in the day when you wanted to learn how to quilt you would take lessons and you would make these sample blocks using practice fabrics that were not very nice, but the purpose was to learn how to make the quilt blocks before you cut into any fabric that you considered precious for your best quilt.

    I have one of those pillowcases that was sent by my dad to my mom from Fort Knox - Korean War. Yes I lived in KY from the time I was 6 weeks old until I was about two. And as my husband used to say "and then she got shoes"

    I have that problem at the minute George. I have a few vintage fisher price toys which are complete and near mint inc boxes. I’m aware that I could make more money by parting them out but it hurts my heart to do that……so they’re in the attic while I think about it some more.

    Way back in the day, people did not let family sleep under a drunkards path believing the child would grow up to be a drunkard. May of those patterns the pieces can be re rearranged to make other patterns. I adore old quilts, esp the all hand pieced and quilted. I'm not so talented but do love to smock and sew clothing.

    Good evening to you, George! That incolay plate was really pretty. It actually would've looked good in the frame that was behind it. I've always wanted one of the cobalt sailboat beverage sets, but I prefer the pitcher not have the ice lips. OMG...those blue bow geese...I think I'll have to take a pill 😂 That 1950s cannister set was in great condition, and it was pretty. I liked that blue beverage set, when you were showing the pink vase. It looked like, from what I could see of it, that it might have been a Northwood set. That turquoise flip-top rubbish can interested me. I like the old print block trays. They make great wall displays for minis. Those looked like really fun places to shop! Thanks for taking us along!!!

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was surprised to be as fond of an Incolay piece as I was of that one! I usually like ice lip pitchers better but agree with you on that one, somehow the design gets clunky with it. I should've checked out the Northwood set, it was fun shopping with others but I got easily distracted! You and other viewers also mentioned the turquoise can, it was so inexpensive but we were too many people in a small car for me to get it. Thanks for coming with us!

    • @CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS
      @CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheAntiqueNomad I'm usually not a big fan of Incolay, either, but that one was nice. Most of the ice lipped pitchers are a bit newer than I like. I don't think I've ever seen a Victorian Era or really early C20 pitcher with them. Of all the beverage sets I have, there might be four of them with a pitcher with the ice lips. That turquoise can, for some reason, really caught my eye. The colour was still really good on it, and it looked like it would clean up nicely. A good coat of automotive wax would do wonders for it, too. Those places really did look like good places to shop for bargains.

      I was hoping that you would say the pieces were verified as being all there! I’m your subscriber that continues to mention from time to time that I cannot for the life of me upgrade my membership. I used a computer for years, both at work, with a Regional Office of a Federal Cabinet Level Department until retirement and my own computer until it recently “died.” I purchased a powerful iPad with lots of bells and whistles rather than another computer. What I’m saying is I’m no dolt! I have more degrees than I care to mention. It’s a mystery to me why I’m having such difficulty in getting an upgrade done. While working in my profession, I did curated antiques shows on weekends unless I was in D.C. on temporary duty. I keep my toe in the water convinced once bitten by buying then selling is a lifetime malady! haha! I’m muddling along in my Level One Membership until I eventually “getter done.” ❤

    After visiting a higher end auction house for appraisal day I am just saddened. Americana hasn’t recovered since 2008. And told furniture has been hurt the most.
    Showed me sand art from the civil war is selling for big money but interest is lowering. I’ve never seen it anywhere.

      I think it really depends what you sell. Some categories of collecting (1960s glass, vintage costume jewelry mid-century designer furniture) are soaring, while traditional furniture and old-line antiques are languishing. I'm not honestly experiencing a downturn anywhere near what we went through in 2008
