GURPS is my "desert island" RPG pick. My favorite RPG system of all time. It encourages actual roleplaying through disadvantages, quirks etc... Great video thank you Freddy

I totally know what you mean, Gurps is perfectly designed to fit it's niche, and encourages so much imagination and roleplaying. Cheers.

I've never seen roleplaying in GURPS.

I feel like combining GURPS Cyberpunk with GURPS Illuminati would make for one hell of a crazy campaign. I'm probably gonna run that someday.

It's one of the joys of GURPs, just the weird combination of sourcebooks to make something new, so you could use GURPs Space along with GURPs Romans to make a science fiction roman empire {pauses as he realises he just reinvented Star Wars}. The sourcebooks just made your creative juices run.

I used generic Universal role-playing system for a long time. I literally created worlds such as Resident Evil, my own post-apocalyptic stuff, all kinds of things. The add-ons help, but you don't have to have them if you have a good imagination.

Yep, the core book lets you do so much. The benefit of the addon books are that they were so well researched, and reading them really sparked the imagination, and you found yourself pondering whether putting together a campaign following time travelling Romans or the like would be a good use of time?

For me the thing about GURPS is I use it when I have a campaign idea that doesn't fit any other RPG that I own.
I think there's an equivalence that goes something like this : GURPS Space = Star Wars, Firefly, Coriolis. GURPS Horror = Cthulhu, Delta Green, Kult. GURPS Fantasy = any of the myriad fantasy rpg's out. I may be wrong but I think people go to the specific games for for genre they want. Last point is the crunch is pretty high but you can strip it back.

GURPS really does stand out when you want to make something different, but I agree if you're going for an established genre, there's probably better games out there. Which doesn't diminish GURPS as a fantastic jack of all trades system.

Remember if Interplay successfully gotten the GURPS license before making the first fallout game. Fallout would be a GURPS setting.

Apparently they had an early working version based on GURPS, I seem to remember seeing screenshots.

I remember GURPS being the first RPG book I ever struggled to read. Bland illustrations, giant walls of text in a very dry writing style - it became an endurance test to get through it.
I do think it serves a purpose as an RPG that's generic and quite realistic without being overly complicated. The sourcebooks are famously well researched, making them useful for other RPGs - there's the famous story of their research into hacking for GURPS Cyberpunk getting their computers seized by the FBI. I read GURPS Arabian Nights to help with the Al-Qadim campaign I did in D&D3. It's not to my taste as a game system though.

Yeah, as I said in the review it's a very bland design with just walls of text and few illustrations to inspire you to storytelling. But the sourcebooks were truly amazing, I've got so many of them around here.

Cheers, much appreciated. The Gurps sourcebooks were always worth picking up even if you never intended to play them as a source of information for other games.
