Actually, Irrfan Khan was supposed to play the lead role. Vicky said, "Replacing Irrfan Khan for Sardar Udham is my tribute to Irrfan, an actor whom I love and admire"
The most appreciable fact about the movie is that the feeling of patriotism was not forced upon the audience, which is the case with most movies in bollywood. There were no over-the-top dialogues and no patriotic song. The emotion coveyed was very pure and raw and the credit for the same goes to the strong cinematography of the film. Definitely a masterpiece!!!
I agree. And I only kept thinking one thing the entire movie, that how the hell did Udham Singh have so much patience and determination. He lived through Jallianwala Bagh and he was so determined to complete his mission, even when he knew that the Britishers will hide every fact about him and his sacrifice. Facing the man responsible for the death of his brothers and having the patience to work in his house, having a normal conversation everyday, pretending that everything is fine. How did he get that much patience, I'll never know. Salute to all the freedom fighters of our country! This movie truly makes you feel the sacrifice and struggle for our independence.
Trust me that “KOI ZINDA HAI ?”!!!! Hits very powerfully … and in the end Bhagat Singh pic in his hand sent chills through my spine and cried more and more 😭😭😭
The director Shoojit Sircar is from Bengal Yet he presented Punjab in such an authentic way, especially Jallianwala bagh scene. The sets, costumes, language, people, so authentic Being a Punjabi, I totally felt connected to it. Hats off!

As a matter of fact the British Government awarded O. Dyer 26000 rupees for his act of valor at the Jalianwala bagh. The amount after inflation adjustment stands to Rs.140 million rupees in 2021
They awarded 26000 pounds (not rupees) from a fund collected in England to Reginald Dyer (the officer who gave the orders to fire), not O' Dwyer who was assassinated by Udham Singh.
For us indians, Britishers are no different from Nazis and imperial Japanese. German and Japanese feels guilty and asked for forgiveness, but so called great Britain and its citizens are shamelessly proud of their cruelty on us.
This is the first time that Jallianwala bagh massacre is shown with such clarity. No filmmaker ever had vision to make this. By watching these scenes, we can feel the pain but what in real people had to go through was the real pain
The Legend of Bhagat Singh also shows it well, so much so that when rang de basanti was being made the director asked Raj Kumar Santoshi if he can use the Jallianwalla Bagh scene from the legend as he did not think he could do better and it made into the Rang de basanti film.
FYI, This movie isn't allowed to be inducted as a nominee for an Oscar because it shows Britishers in bad light. It shows hatred towards them. Also, the role of Sardar Udham Singh was first to be enacted by Late Irrfan Khan.. but due to his unfortunate demise.. Vicky was chosen and he is too damn good.
do you know the people who shot were soldiers from Gorkha regiment. once again, it is a Bengali who rejected this movie for the Oscars. thats indian history in a nut shell. our own people are biggest traitors.

And even if you still want to point that out, please realise, the director of this movie is also a Bengali. Also, the Gorkha Regiment consisted of soldiers from the ethnic community Gurkha of Nepal. So again, not exactly Indians :) That was why Dyer used the Gorkhas instead of the Indian soldiers.
The scene with the water is a purification. Holy water purifies you.. it’s like a rebirth. He did in fact completely change as a person. His innocence was lost that night and he lived from that moment onwards for revenge and to drive freedom forward.
Jallianwala Massacre - Every Indian has read about it, heard about it or has seen it in many movies before. But what this movie does brilliantly is, show it like no one has ever shown it before.
The massacre was done on the day of Baisakhi - an important Sikh festival. It is the solar new year and also a spring harvest festival of Punjab. Additionally, Baisakhi is also the day the tenth Guru of Sikhs - Guru Gobind Singh Ji - created the new Khalsa order of Sikhs which was a casteless fraternity. It's kinda like a massacre on Christmas eve.

I'll just put this out simply : The Jallianwalla Bagh Massacre shown in the Sardar Udham film, is by far the best and most intense depictions to have ever seen the day of light. I had previously brokedown watching the same event depicted in Anushka Sharma's Phillauri. But compared to this, that was nothing. I cried for an whole hour after watching this ending, and felt immense pain in my heart and soul for all the people who lost their lives under the British Raj. My heart goes out to anybody who lived through this trauma. God bless all the revolutionaries who gave their lives for the freedom of this nation and its people.
Nothing happened after his death, every one was buzzy with their battle for freedom! There are several forgotton heroes in the freedom struggle of India
He was not forgotten, there is a district In Uttarakhand named after him.. that is one of the places I knew him from, before the movie came out.. the last part of movie was just heart wrenching...
Dont you know that in 80s after a very long time British India returned that martyr's cremated body and whole India was praising and not a single needle point was vacant on roads on his cremation in India.
The soilders who shot the civilians were from gorkha regiment that got recruited from nepal in that period and small section of soilders were from baloch regiment mordern day Baluchistan... So they were not directly associated with india during that time.. They were more of british servants and indian feelings hardly mattered to them. General Dyer knew if he appointed indian soilders to do this task. They might not do it.
If i was in that place be it people from any country i wouldnt do it i mean there are little kids. I would aim my gun at the general and kill him first, later i will be okay wih the punishment i get. This is how i feel everytime i watch this scene.

Jaby and Achara - there was a specific reason why Dyer chose those soldiers.. They were the Gurkhas and they necessarily dint have a soft corner. That's the main reason he chose the Gurkha regiment to open fire.
Yes the Bastard Dyer arrived with two armoured vehicles, 25 Gurkhas of 1/9 Gurkha Rifles (1st battalion, 9th Gurkha Rifles), 25 Pathans and Baluch and 59th Sindh Rifles so they wont have the sense of self belonging with the peoples. Even the God can’t forgive the British then and now.
in 27:49 yup you are right also there is another reference wanted to tell you that when he was Hanged in London Prison his Body dies out but when he was taking a Dip in water near Golden Temple after Traumatic Events his Soul Dies...... thats the Beauti of the story...
One of the major things with the movie was the lack of uniform source material. Essentially, built from bits and pieces of records - They had this idea more than 20 years ago and since then have steadily been researching and piecing together pieces of Sardar Udham's life. The non-linear storytelling actually alludes to this so you are experiencing the movie in the way the filmmakers slowly unraveled his life. I'll forever compliment Shoojit Sircar's genius for taking this "disadvantage" and turning it into a story-telling device. It is why the emotional core - and primary motivation - for Sardar Udham's later actions and dedication is kept at the end.
This is the most important lesson that they don’t tell you about freedom. We take freedom for granted today. Freedom isn’t a right, it’s a privilege, for which many have laid down their lives. The massacre scene left most of us soulless. We have studied about it in school, and seen in movies, but it’s always put up in a simple way that the English came fired and killed so many. I think this is the first time someone has tried to show us what happened post the firing.
I love and completely agree with that line "Freedom isn't a right, it's a privilege". It's a thing that was given to us by the sacrifice of our freedom fighters.
You are absolutely right. This is why my blood boils whenever I see the widespread dishonesty amongst us Indians and the bribery system that exists in our country. Sometimes I feel we do not deserve the freedom given to us by our great predecessors.
To address Achara (27:58), Jallianwalla Bagh is about 5 minutes (by walk) away from the Golden temple. And yes that scene (Vicky taking bath in golden temple) has a deep symbolic meaning.
You raised a very interesting point.. in my entire schooling the sheer brutality of British raj was missing.. it's only Gandhi and congress throughout . We did not get our freedom without blood lost.. the British wiped atleast 6 million indians.. and they remain unapologetic for their actions ...

Actually no it's not. It's for helpful for the living to break away the connection - true but it's utmost important for the atmaan which is why our days and customs go on for so long. At least in Indian tradition, if you are going through processions you should know why we do this because if you don't then you'll end up making up stupid reasons and philosophies behind it which doesn't even suit our worldview just like you are doing now. That means after a while people will start giving advice about changing them based on false assumptions and false equivalences based on imported philosophies that are fundamentally opposed to our worldview. A recent example: People giving unsolicited advice about kanya-daan when they don't even know what it is and think it means giving away a daughter which is actually stupid. Better leave your traditions if you don't know or understand your customs but at least don't spread misunderstanding and corrupt it. Even I know not to give a sermon about Japanese or Korean tradition without knowing their underlying worldview and reasonings but people in India have lost their capacity for wisdom and independent thinking and are hell-bent on corrupting and cleansing what remaining knowledge is still intact. This country is already facing intellectual bankruptcy, we don't need to create more opportunities. The British have anyways won in what they came to do since I do hear Indian people speaking the same language that the colonizers did and I am not talking about English here.
Well actually I wanted to stay away from the debate...but in Hindu tradition...we burn our dead because we believe in Atman..and the logic behind it is meant for the dead...obviously Jaby is right in his own way. But I agree with Priya here.
Only intelligent people explore other cultures like this. Even though it may be difficult to watch at times, you two now have the knowledge of what happened, and you will pass that down to your children. THIS is the most important thing. Just think how hard this was to watch, and then try to imagine how the victims felt.... This is why it's great to learn about these things, so that you pass the best traits to your kids. You both are good people, and THANK YOU!
Don't wanna sound rude but maybe another film that got selected might be better than this right? It's a competition and we don't know... Maybe... 'Maybe'

That’s because that’s all we learn. And in many ways not even that. Being in school in the UK. I didn’t do that much in the British Raj or the empire really. We learnt about what the Commonwealth and Empire was but not what they did. In school I learnt about Gandhi however more so many his non violence stance he was linked to other non violence movements around the world such as Martin Luther King Jr and Mandela. When India got independence and how Pakistan and Bangladesh were formed but not the struggle to get there. Plus I learnt about the Mughals. That was it. We learnt about both world wars but nothing about the soldiers from India and the other Empire counties who fought alongside them. I only knew about the Gurkhas as they fought for their rights for pension and settling in the UK.
Thank you for reviewing it and re-living what we Indians do every time we are told about that day. It's merely the tip of what all happened but finally, the world is getting to know everything they weren't told by the British about the British raj in India.
I watched this with my husband and when it ended, we didn't speak for at least 10min. It took time to process what we watched. Our reaction and questions were exactly the same as Jaby and Achara. Previous movies mentioning Udham Singh and Jalliawalla Bagh didn't show the depth and emotions of what happend. This movie hit the right spot with the emotions and how it made you feel. It's was as if your with Udham jis journey. When I went to Amritsar years back I was 19, I went to Jalliawalla Bagh and seeing the bullet holes and knowing what happend i had those emotions that pain and the suffering. It's a place of history.. a place of suffering. It puts you in a very deep dark emotional place.
The Bastard Dyer arrived with two armoured vehicles, 25 Gurkhas of 1/9 Gurkha Rifles (1st battalion, 9th Gurkha Rifles), 25 Pathans and Baluch and 59th Sindh Rifles so they wont have the sense of self belonging with the peoples. Even the God can’t forgive the British then, now and never.
There were no Indian soldiers there at that time. The people hired by Dyer were all Britishers so they will have no mercy and would not turn against them! They just showed only one tank but there were six tanks and each one blocked the six different exits of the Bagh! Thousands of people just jumped into the well to escape but they died from the fall. I even went to see the well and its heard-breaking...it completely sealed by the thick net so that no one is able to see inside! Its horrifying!
The thing about soldiers that you said. If you notice properly, the soldiers were Gurkhas, they know nothing but their target. Also it was a good(bad for us) strategy(though shameful) of the British to use Maratha soldiers against Bengalis, Gurkhas against Punjabis and Punjabis (mostly Sikhs) against Afgans and Tamils(Madrasi of those times) in Burma and so on. The soldiers were often unfamiliar with the locals. Another thing is the Gurkhas know nothing but their target, a quality that the military admires and that's why they are even now deployed in British Army. The Brits love them. No offense to the Gorkhas, I'm from their region. They are lovely people but they are dangerously magnificent soldiers.

They masked it behind hatred. It might be the revolutionary politics hidden in the film that irked them. Fake nationalists may not have enjoyed that. I think the same happened during the time of struggle for independence also. So many revolutionary heroes were left forgotten.
And that day was the festival of Baisakhi for Hindus and Sikhs. People joined both to celebrate and protest. That was why there were many women and children too.

Definitely the best aspect of this movie.
U r so right, forced nationalism is just fascism

But Rights and Humanity is Most Important things in Life
Ikr the rescue mission at night was more heart wrenching than the massacre itself 😭

Bathing in holy waters is supposed to give peace which he couldn't find...

Yasssss...absolutely true. Great one by jaby.

This movie taught us the price of our Freedom struggle. .. Salute to all who fought for our nation 🙏🙏
Now it’s in the hands of monkeys (sanghis)
Now its in the hand of right one
True😭
Respect them
The British had a policy to use the army of different parts in different states so there is no feeling of belonging.. so the soldiers who are from other states were stationed in Punjab at that time
They really messed us in every way they can.
Thats a very clever strategy !
Yup that was the gorkhaa regiment.
Yup, gurkha, rajput and pashto specifically for this massacre
@@puneetkaur7245 no rajput regiment. Atleast read before spreading misinformation.

I wish Jaby you'll come to Amritsar and see the GOLDEN TEMPLE and Jallianwala Bagh by yourself. Amritsar is Chaotic yet a peaceful and welcoming place, great people, holy site for everyone.
Can’t agree more.
That well gives you goosebumps and you are angry at the same time
I wish
I visited Amritsar once and was struck by the beauty of Shri Harmandir Saheb (Golden Temple), couldn't take my eyes of it and felt like staying there forever. Also enjoyed the food and hospitality of langar at the temple. I want to visit the golden temple again.
The best scene for me is when British general gives order and walk behind the indian soldiers...that was the best visual, best acting best part of the movie was....and British actor totally deserve the applause for the acting...it gave me chills...👍
Let me clear a thing, which you guys were confused with...
The men who were shooting , were not indian...they were from afghanistan and gorkha(nepali)..who didn't have any sympathy towards the condition of india...
Gurkhas in Punjab, Sikhs in Afghanistan. Brits were smart. But still no Indian soldiers resisted.
Yup
Watching tears in your eyes made me cry...your reaction is genuine and powerful. Love you two.
You will cry only when those britishers will cry....... 🙂👍

Did you guys know that originally it was Irrfan Khan who was cast as Udham ?? But due to his health situation it had to be handed over to Vicky. Imagine Irrfan in this role. Phew!!!!😇😇.
RIP legend.
But I think, Irfan sir won't be disappointed by the way Vicky Kaushal has portrayed the role. He would be proud.😊
@@yashovardhan849 Absolutely 💯💯💯he is such a brilliant actor❤️
Vicky Kaushal is easily one of the best actors out there too. In every role he takes the person vicky is not present, he is a completely different character till deep under the skin. Unlike many others who though act well are recognisable as what their actual personality is. That's why Vicky Kaushal is way up there in my list of best actors. Infact I believe Vicky and Nawaz are the best actors of Bollywood right now followed by Ranbir followed by Irrfan Manoj Pankaj followed by Ranveer Rajkumar Hritk(guzarish) followed by Shahid(Haider) and Amir. Irrfan sir will be proud. 💙
Irrfan is , was and always will be LOVE❤️
The only significant inaccuracy in the movie is that Udham Singh was present at the massacre site with his friends from the orphanage. He was one of the few survivors who were able to escape.
We don't know that for a technically and it's assumed that he was there during the massacre.
Finally Bollywood crossed the Hollywood by this masterpiece...
13:48 West Bengal, highest rice producer in India (World no.2) and Bangladesh (World no. 4 in rice) together the Bengal Delta most fertile soil in world, cyclones every year, still abundant rice never sees famine. Winston Churchill deliberately caused famine killed 3million Bengalis and took out his vengeance on the Revolutionary Bengal which was the centre of Freedom Struggle and Revolution . He did this out of sheer hatred and vandeta for Bengalis just because they created problems for the occupying imperialist forces like Shoheed Khudiram Bose(before Shaheed Bhagat Singh) assasinated British judge and was hanged at the age of 18. I Pray to Maa Durga anyone who considers Churchill a hero should go to bed hungry and famished atleast once in their life.
Guys, see if you can interview Vicky again, more focused on this movie. It will be really great !

This scene was so difficult to watch, even as I type this, my hands are shaking. All the books and articles, they just show us the tip of the iceberg, the reality was too heartbreaking and brutal even to imagine. The British will never be forgiven for their deeds
Forgive but never forget .
Its their ancestors who did it . You cant blame the current generation for these horrifying acts.
@@architsharan6259 Yes I agree , but the Government has not even apologized for what they did.

Yes I agree but what about the Indian Soldiers who fired the bullets... They could have easily killed motherfucker Dyer there and protested... I think they are equally responsible for the incident.

The distress Jaby felt is so real. I've felt the same way, even when this incident was shown in many cheesy, patriotic movies. When we read in our social studies textbooks, about the mothers jumping into a well carrying their children, to escape the shooting, we still feel our stomach turning.
This movie though... it just made sure that viewers cannot walk away marking the incident as a footnote in history. I hope this gets enough non-Indian viewers. As Udham Singh said - no, we don't hate British. But, that doesn't mean that British get to walk away not acknowledging it.
The hate and animosity towards the Brits will be carried on for generations to come, we can never forgive them.
Even the strongest person on earth can't help but would cry at this particular segment... Long live Udham ❤
15:24 soldiers were not indian, they were 25 Gorkha soldiers and 25 Baluchis(from baluchistan and Afghanistan) armed with rifles.
The Brits used soldiers from different parts of entire Indian sub continent. The soldiers used here didn't had any attachments with the place, they probably didn't even spoke the same language.
The Brits were cunning, very cunning, they were very good at what they did.
@Som Aditya Indians had no Nation or Civilizational identity at tht time. They were all educated by British syllabus. So thts how powerful Social engineering is

RED BLOODY SALUTE TO COMRADE UDHAM SINGH INDIAN REVOLUTIONARY
15:45 Indians killing Indians that is the result of divide and conquer policy implemented by the british.(it works by granting privilege to one part of a society all the while Disenfranchising others as the result the society as a group ceases to coexist and breeds hate and mistrust in overall.)
They were not Indians, they were Nepali and Baluchi
Someone in the comment section told those were not indians but gorkhas and balochs.
Muslims and Hindus were divided before British
They maybe amplified that
reservation in modern times.
They were gurkhas, pathans and balochs. These people were carefully selected by dyer because they weren't affiliated to India that much.
As a Indian i would appreciate if the western people's watch this movie we don't want Oscar we just want recognition. I damage that Britishers has done to us is so immense that we are still facing its consequences. As one your viewer i would really appreciate if you atleast tell your friends and colleagues about this film and show them the really face of their ancestors and what they did to us and to others 🙏
Stop begging and disgracing. If they want to, they will. We don't need their pity. And stop folding hands. Have some esteem
We dont want their recognition... We know wat britishers did... Their crowd dont even know wat brits did to the world coz they dont teach that in their curriculum... They were taught brits act were a step towards civilization... It boils my blood... So we dont need anything from anyone...
If they want to know they will know... They will be curious to find out about the truth.. thats it..
That was 200% accurate for sure, dear .......!!!!
Jaby is feeling exactly what all of us felt watching the end scene.
@@The1977guddu That smile of hers was sarcastic, not a genuine smile. She did feel what we felt but not to the extent of what Jabby felt as we could see it on his face. She did say that she had to switch off her mind from feeling because it was too much for her. This scene is so strong and powerful that literally words won’t be ever enough to explain how one feels.
Sardar Udham Singh was never forgotten he was one amongst many. One also remembers
Anant Laxman Kanhare and Krishnaji Karve who Shot Mr. Jackson collector of Nashik,
Babu Genu who was crushed to death under a truck by a British Police officer,
Babu Shedmake who fought Battles against the British Army
Baiza Bai with fought against the Maratha Wars against the British
Chaphaker Brothers Damodar, Balakrishna and Vasudev who shot Walter Rand
Raghoji Bhangre He had killed a British Officer and 10 constables in an ambush in 1844
These are just to name a few not so well known Freedom Fighters. That too from only Maharashtra (one State) There are many many more from Punjab, Bengal, Bihar, etc etc. The British ruled India for 150 odd years so that makes almost 5 generation of Indians (assuming each generation is of 30 years) there is no dearth of stories of forgotten Heroes.

This movie is a masterpiece. I was able to hold back my tears all through the massacre scene until Vicky being consoled by a child. Something about that broke my heart to several pieces in a second. This story needed to be told.

Shujit sarkaar is one of the credible directors who make sure that there are least discrepancies in the story. One other example of his craft is movie called “Madras cafe”
The movie is based on stories from his family,
Books written by British citizens , documents released in 2001 and Udham singh is one of the most talked about revolutionary after Bhagat singh
you see even now when people in England are asked about their British empire, what they say is that brits gave us railways, law system and all while they never mention the cost we paid as if it was impossible without them.
They need to see Shashi Tharoor speech
Also look up, '1957 high schoolers debate' , with the thumbnail 'why do you think colonialism is so bad'
The brit is so ignorant about British brutality in its colonies, and argues the same things you said.
Visitors to the gaschambers in the Nazi camps mention the same experience. Such human suffering lingers on, it is too much to just disappear.
Dude this is sad truth of whole India and Indians. Nothing to be blamed, but self. It's same as just the story of monkey cat and bread. Indians are always divided, we need to improve ourselves than blaming others
this was exactly why they could rule on us two whole centuries.
Its sad that, we were never taught enough about these brave hearts like Udham, Bhagat Singh, Chandrasekhar azad, Subash Chndra Bose, the brave Marathas, Prithvi raj chauhan... Our education system is so obsessed with Nehru, Gandhi ... Mughal Empire (the paraisites, blood suckers).
Gandhi Ji father of nation, respect him
You can’t call them blood suckers and stuff Gandhi ji was the father of the nation but sometimes we get taught really bs sooo that should be replaced with these historic heroes, and also instead of teaching abt other countries like French Revolution and stuff why can’t they focus on our Indian heroes too. 🔥❤️😢

This incident strengthened his mental resolve even more. Which is shown when he kept walking down the snowy region alone after he split paths with other people.
The ending scene where Udham Singh comes out of the 'Sarowar' pond of The Golden Temple, signifies the transitioning moment of Udham Singh, the moment he decided to take revenge, the moment from where he stopped smiling, the moment he knew what he has to do with his life.
The film was recently rejected for Oscar entry from India. The selectors said that movie is influenced by hatred. That to me is so wrong🤯.
They masked it behind hatred. It might be the revolutionary politics hidden in the film that irked them. Fake nationalists may not have enjoyed that. I think the same happened during the time of struggle for independence also. So many revolutionary heroes were left forgotten.
😭😭🥹 This type of Incident hurts me as an young Indian, I am a teenager and I cried and phrase the patriotism of my freedom fighters.
You have to remember, whatever they show in the movie about that scene, the reality was 100 times more horrific
And that day was the festival of Baisakhi for Hindus and Sikhs. People joined both to celebrate and protest. That was why there were many women and children too.
