I know this could never happen, but I'd love to see McFarlane Toys themselves make a Spider-Man and see how well he captures his own art style. Again, never gunna happen, but a boy can dream. But hey, I found the original toybiz McFarlane Spidey for like 7 bucks at the flea market, it's a favorite for sure! Great vid man!
Actually I know this comment is a year old but if you see this there is now a chance that mcfarlane and hasbro collaborate and make a mcfarlane spider man
As a kid, Todd McFarlane’s art blew my mind. His unorthodox way of drawing and attention to detail really redefined the look of the modern Spidey. I remember he used to take the top ten artist spot in the magazines of Wizard. Him and Ditko were my favorite Spider-Man artists because of the way they took risks in their art styles.
fun fact: when todd mcfarlane first did his style in amazing spider-man, it caused a ton of trouble in the locations with a spidey performer, marvel had a single suit that they used for all spider-man performers in nearly any location with a spidey performer, and kids straight up said "your not spider-man, you have small eyes". it took years for marvel to issue out new spider-man suits with the correct eyes, it was used for many years (and in some random locations is still in use today) and became iconic, it was even used for the ps1 spider-man game tutorial!
3:50 You’re telling me a 2001 toybiz Spider-Man action figure was rocking painless joints, but it took marvel legends a decade to finally incorporate them?
LOL. That's what I'm saying. Alot of this "new" toy tech isn't new at all. Alot of these new points of articulation, we BEEN had since toybiz. Only thing Hasbro has done is updated the sculpts.
2:07- that's actually tye web trap Spidey from '97.The Flip n Trap released in '98 is the same figure, just had a black.paint job in the place of the blues. Great video as always! 🕸️🕷️❣️
As has been said, I do believe the Mafex Spidey is more so modeled after Mark Bagley’s version, with the extra masked head resembling J Scott Campbell’s take. And I think the fact that Mafex has been aping a lot of Comic art that leans into the Marvel vs Capcom aesthetic (which was modeled after Bagley’s design) also supports my opinion. And personally I think the. Eyes & profile scream Bagley’s way more than McFarlane. Either way, great video. I actually would love for Mafex to make an unmistakably definitive McFarlane Spider-man. I’m not the biggest fan of the Current Mafex Spidey’s shoulders.
Great video as always, man! Also the figure in 2:07, it had another variant which was red & black & there is actually a third Mafex Classic Spidey that came before the latest one (the one with the flatter paints) which was like the first release but with a cleaner, more metallic looking blue like in the promo images.
McFarlane not only was a talented and skillful artists because he drew Batman with a huge cape and more jagged and Spider-Man with the big eyes, those designs got me loving the characters even more. And 1999 spawn action figures, like the viper king and the spawn nitro riders and the spawn robots are still looking back very badass toys and collectibles.
Anyone who hasn’t been able to get the 2004 figure and is okay with knockoffs, there a readily available one on AliExpress for about $16. The butterflys are backwards and it doesn’t have any black wash. But with a little work, it is a great alternative and perfect for customs. I don’t own one myself but I’ve seen plenty of good examples
Mafex is the best of them. Hasbro used to be detailed like that now they put low effort to it by making it flat. No textures. No improvement. It was perfect back in the late 2000s and early 2010s
BBTS owes you a commission. Ordered the Mafex Spidey now that I watched this list. Been on the fence, and your video tipped me over. Great video and detail!
keep in mind to possibly order from amiami next time you want export figures. depending on where you live, amiami is so much cheaper. i got my symbiote spidey mafex from bbts and it was quite a bit more compared to amiami
I'm surprised that no one has done a direct comparison between the Superposable McFarlane Spider-Man and the Mafex Spider-Man, since for the longest time the toybiz one was considered the best. That would be a video I would pay to see!
Hey carbon love all your videos!! Especially the spidey videos since he’s my favorite hero! Also with the Mafex 185 figure the shoulders on it are backward, a simple shoulder and bicep swap will fix it, I highly recommend doing it but look it up first on TH-cam if you try to make sure you don’t have the elbow snap
Very nice video, the marvel legends spidey from the raft giftset has a nice headsculpt too. And in other scales we have the real action heroes spiderman from 2005 which has mcfarlane art in the packaging. Also we have a couple of good 3.75 inches versions: the spiderman that comes in a 2 pack with shocker and the marvel universe series 007 and 032 figures. Again, very good video. Congratulations.
Also, What is favorite Marvel Legends reveal from Hasbro like Astonishing X-MEN, Uncanny X-MEN issue #275, Outback Rogue, The Blob, Kid Omega, Star Jammers, Safari Jacket Wonder Man, The Orb because those figures in my opinion are really super cool
You hit some major highlights! Of the ones I didn’t expect but am really excited for - Orb! Of the figure that have been on my wish list for a while - Wonder Man!
There's a Marvel Legends Spider-Man that resembles McFarlane's work really well. I think it was a comic con exclusive. The Spider-Man came in a RAFT set.
I get where you are coming from, but as someone that watched the progression “live”. It always felt like Bags was apeing McFarlane’s style - which was under direct order from Marvel.
While the Mafex Symbiote Spider-Man figure is definitely McFarlane style with the main head sculpt, Mafex Comic Spider-Man is absolutely not Todd McFarlane’s Spider-Man. The chest emblem does not have the bulbs on the end of the legs, the webs are not condensed enough, and most importantly, the eyes are undeniably Mark Bagley’s shaping. I hope we get a true McFarlane Spider-Man from Mafex soon though because he’s one of my favorite Spider-Man artists for sure.
I love the new Mafex Spidey! Very classic and I love it. Definitely need it to be in my Marvel display. But one thing I’ve noticed is that both of the shoulders are backwards, idk if you caught that 👀👀
Love the video and the Mafex Spider-Man, but I just really don't see it being a McFarlane Spider-Man. He isn't built like McFarlane's in terms of the physique and his eyes to point in like McFarlane (If you compare his art to the fig, McFarlane lets the whites of the eyes to point up like the black outline). It definitely screams Bagley way more than McFarlane. Though it is super 90s either way.
Can I point out how the toybiz series 1 figure and battle damaged version both have painless joints? People freaking over the new painless tech have obviously not been paying attention, Neca have been doing painless for years too.
The Amazing Yamaguchi Spider-Man figure could also be a good version of the McFarlane Spider-Man since it can get into the crazy poses that McFarlane drew Spidey in, as well as having exaggerated proportions. The only thing that really needs changed on the figure is the eyes imo
You might want to switch the shoulders on the 185 because most of them are switched out of the box. you'll notice that the weblines are not in line because the left is on the right and vice versa. Because Mafex QA is ...well mafex standards lol
I'm surprised you didn't mention the ML raft boxset spidey. That one for sure has to be a mcfarlane spidey since it matches the eyes and logos perfectly
I don't even have a Todd Mcfarlane design Spider-Man figure, But I did got the RYV Spider-Man 2 pack and switched out the head for the retro card Ben Reilly Spider-Man head, If I get a chance, I will get the Amazing Fantasy Spider-Man along with getting TOEI Japanese Supaidaman figure, Amazing video Carbon Scoring.
We share the same opinion brother I'm 43 years old and have been chasing the definitive McFarlane Spider-Man action and finally mafex nailed it perfectly with the new classic suit
Mafex isnt Mcfarlane is Bagley, and the Super Posable toybiz one isnt Mcfarlane either ive never known why people call it that when it clearly isnt, mcfarlanes eyes have more intricate shape, the figure resembles more of Campbells artwork
I hear you on MAFEX and Bagley. But I think I explained how McFarlane’s Spidey design changed over time from the look of the initial super Posable to the second one. Also, there is a very clear J Scott Campbell figure that I review in the Spider-Man panels to plastics video
Not a bad comparison, but man,the mafex spidey is a reproduction of the mark bagley spidey, not the mcfarlane, the shape of the eyes alone talk himself, mcfarlane eyes are more straight up and narrowon the side, you can also search the bagley art of the 90 and this figure is perfect, but os not a mcfarlane reproduction

To me there isn't really a perfect version of mcfarlane. None of the figures have the under arm webbing, none of them capture the dark blue and the early ditko-esque webbing which is what mcfarlane is inspired from for most of his design. And his spidey is tough, he can look lanky compared to other characters like captain america and wolverine but his spidey is probably one of the most muscular spideys maybe even the most muscular one, all these figures are either too small or too lanky for his style (like the 2004 toybiz one). So there is still no figure that captures his spidey well enough for me, 2004 toybiz one is the closest in terms of head sculpt but the webbing on the mask is inaccurate. So yeah, back to customs again LOL.
As much as i love all the older toybiz figures due to nostalgia and the amazing sculpture, i must admit that the newer mafex one is the objectively better figure. my only problem with it is that he looks like he's wearing an adult diaper. Another excellent video carbon scoring!
