That Greek team was a pretty good team. After this game, and until 2004 they had only lost one official game. And they became European Champions in 2004.
Three.. In official games, Greece also lost 2-1 in Group stage from Russia in Euro 2004 but still managed to qualify thanks to better goal average from Spain...
@greg oscar my nation can deal with its own shit and sooner or later will get to where it's supposed to be. You, on the other hand, are hopeless. And don't flatter yourself thinking I'm talking about your origins or nationality. I'm talking about you as a person, an excuse of a human being. Words are not enough.. Feeling sorry for you. Hey for what it's worth, if you believe in resurrection.. There's your chance.
i remember that match, it was the last one of the group, Greece had already eliminated...it's sad because neither of the free kicks that Becks shot were "real" fouls...The Dutch referee never took part in a Uefa game again since that and England was disappointing at WC 2002 ....eventually, Germany was the runner-up of the WC ! Nemesis and greek tragedy simultaneously !
I'm Greek. I was in a Liverpool pub watching the game with some other Greek friends, the only Greeks there. We had no reason to celebrate a win of Greece apart from the win itself as we had already been disqualified. We had a feeling that if England loses from Greece, we would have been beaten by English fans really badly! When England won the foul, I said to some guys: Don't worry, Beckman will score. And when he scored, all brits in the pub bought us beer we couldn't deny! I'll never forget that moment!
About four months after this game, I was in Prague and got tickets for a champions league game between Sparta Prague and Panathinaikos. Gave Nikopolidis a bit of abuse when I was sat a few rows behind his goal in the second half, very immature of me but I was 18 at the time
EminentKnight but hia midfield play was atrocioua bwyond deaceiption. no ability to move da ball around and onlh pumped long ball. put this way, if scholea were to play the middle beckham woulf stiill contribute his deadballs. but seeing acholes moving to wings is beyond belief, erikson just played to media lol. and emgland woudlnt meed the 2 2 shit if played properlh
Totally went AWOL in this match. Never on the right when players wanted to pass the ball there. Abandoned his role. Dreadful performance. All the media and the public remember is a dying seconds equaliser from a free-kick to rectify a problem he had created.
greece played very brave here and im saying this as a turkish from germany but for england it didnt make it better because germany was placed first in the WC 2002 groups even they were behind england in the qualifiers
Not sure you know anxious means. Anxious means you have a sense of anxiety which is effectively panic. Keen, eagar or ardent are the words you're looking for.
Brilliant. I was a teen watching this and even now I rank it as one of my favourite ever England moments. If you just watch the goal alone it's enough but after watching the struggle we went through from the bitter defeat at the old Wembley right through to this climax to get to the World Cup it is fucking brilliant. Beckham is unrivalled as England captain personally, and I'll be impressed if I live to see a better one
I can't understand why England fans take any pride from this game. England was totally outplayed from a far better team, and both English goals came from set pieces, both of which came from diving antics by Beckham and Sheringham for which they should have been yellow carded instead. (The commentators, before the goals are scored, they also state there are no fouls). One team played football, the other played typical English theatrics. Two years later their relative strengths became clear..
I watched it live on TV and all the problems England had were becasuse the right winger deserted his position and got in everybody else's way. Greece had never scored against England from open play before that match.
I couldn`t believe how people particularly the media took Greece so lightly at the time, they were clearly a team on the up but even prior to the 2004 Euros which they won the bookies had them at 80-1 outsiders. We got away with one here.
When you see this and you think back to the forgotten London Olympics, you see how crazy the England Olympic coach was in leaving Beckham out. "In case it became more about Beckham than the team" As it was the team sank without a trace. If Beckham had played millions upon millions would have watched. And as well as Beckham they would have seen the new emerging English talent. And, always, just, always, there was that possibility of Beckham magic to bring English football to life. Sadly, not to be. And instead it all went out with a whimper.
***** Do you not know how to read? I said it would bring greater exposure to the English team and young players because everyone would want to see Beckham (apart from yourself apparently) and that maybe, just maybe, there was always the hope and chance of some Beckham magic.
Completely agree, should have had 3 of the most experienced players as the seniors, beckham could've added so much to the young players, add I'm next to giggs and you have two of the most experienced footballers around
Thank you. I don't know if you are english or jewish, but even though both contributed a lot to civilization, us Greeks did all the dirty work. In Modern history, the Jewish, German, French, Russian and other peoples contributed to civilization, not just the English/Scottish.
i was at this game. england were exceptionally poor except for beckham who was genuinely outstanding. felt like he was playing them on his own a lot of the time.
He deserves a knighthood just for this goal. He wasn't the most technically gifted footballer England as ever produced but he was an absolute grafter on the pitch and hes freekick ability was second to none. An all time great and a national hero...
Miss this England team. Probably wasn't the best, but my Gosh, they are good to watch. Seaman, Martin, Ashley, Keown, Campbell, Ferdinand, Neville, Beckham, Sinclair, Scholes, Gerrard, Andy Cole, Sheringham, Heskey, Owen. Holy cow.
why it has so much fans? every person in greece is a fan. And greece isn't crap. Greece is one of the best countries in the WORLD. And i'm not talking only about football. The enviroment, people, and much more. I can't say that England is crap cuz england is a very nice team too.Greece has won Portugal, France, SPAIN, ENGLAND, and much more powerful teams.
This was the time when Beckham was the best free kick striker in the world, every free kick at a good position was 50-50 for a goal. Unfortunately for the ref. who was very kean on England equalizing, Beckam was not in form that night. You can see the frustration of the Greek players at that suspect last foul call, for there had been another 6 or 7 similar pior to that.
What gets me isn't so much how Beckham is performing (though it is geninuely heroic) but that the other England players *aren't even trying.* It's like a bunch of schoolkids who are getting thrashed, so start pretending they aren't even bothered about losing. Look at the first greek goal. None of the defenders even bother to close down the marker - the worst one, who is barely even jogging back, happens to be the one who was the one with the most noticably poor positioning in response to the same attack. It's like he knows how awful he was and thinks that if he doesn't get in the frame nobody will pick up on it. And the commentators/press don't! It's like they're the parents of the kids, all colluding the convicne themselves that there was nothing they could do/the other team were lucky/unusually talented. Bleh. Beckham is a god for keeping on trying here - when he'd have the most cause to considering how he was treated after 98. Never forgive half the wankers on this team.
i remember that day when I was on my knees waiting for tthe free kick and when he scored I ran every where cheering , what an fantastic player and a great freekick by David Beckham
Of course what really happened was that England were absolutely outplayed and scored twice as a result of free kicks that were the product of extreme theatre and antics by England's desperate and unsportsmanlike (as always, with pretenses to the contrary) players. Not only was David Beckham's goal the result of a totally non-existent foul call, his very good strike was the sole one in a game where his attempts at goal, from a host of free kicks, were rather poor. The Greek team demonstrated its superiority over the next two years in the run up to the Euro (for example by convincingly beating Spain in Madrid which England would never have been able to come close to achieving) and, more famously, in the 2004 tournament itself where the poverty of the English team was laid bare. Ultimately, far from being a cause for celebration this humiliating game should pose questions as to why England can be outclassed by a team coming from a country a fraction of England's size, which mainly focuses on basketball, not football. More recently, Iceland has asked the same question...
When beckham got injured the whole nation held their breath but I think Gerrard getting injured before the World Cup was a bigger loss! Even though beckham was at his peak and basically sheringhams goal as well he was so good with his head it was frightening
Well, I'm watching the highlights in 2018 and I've got to say that, although the protagonist of the game was no doubt Becks, I would like to draw your attention to old-Teddy. He may not have been the most skillful and 'technical' footballer, but he definitely had balls made of steel; true lion, indeed. I gotta give him that, despite the fact that he played for the loathsome Misery Utd.
+MrShtiv True. I think Martin Tyler is ridiculously overrated. He just talks and talks and talks. And misses key moments! I think Motson's commentary on this game is far superior.
the chance at 4:10 - greece should have buried england with that chance. he had so much time and space. the england defender literally walked up to defend .
There's no need to compare England with Greece in football.Every nation has its own best sport. You are better in football,we are better in basketball.
David Beckham Scores Free Kick in Last Minutes against Greece at Old Trafford 9:00 ⚽ Full Time Germany 0-0 Finland England Road to Qualifying on World Cup Thank You David Beckham 🎉
@mozerlam. That draw took them straight to the cup, if they would have lost then they would of went into the playoffs and you never know what can happen in football doesn't matter if they play a weaker team. And also this go was important for him because of the circumstances he was going through with what happened in 98 vs argentina. So yes this was a big goal. Don't hate on someones successes.

Two actually
Both September 2002 qualifiers against Spain and Ukraine 2-0.
Three.. In official games, Greece also lost 2-1 in Group stage from Russia in Euro 2004 but still managed to qualify thanks to better goal average from Spain...
@greg oscar you have no idea of what being Greek is really like. Enjoy your pathetic existence in any non Greek fashion you wish.
@greg oscar my nation can deal with its own shit and sooner or later will get to where it's supposed to be. You, on the other hand, are hopeless. Football from 1992-2004 was the best football. I wish I could relive those years over and over.
I was at this game, Greece played alot better than the highlights show.
cant imagine how mad the atmosphere was !!!
About four months after this game, I was in Prague and got tickets for a champions league game between Sparta Prague and Panathinaikos. Gave Nikopolidis a bit of abuse when I was sat a few rows behind his goal in the second half, very immature of me but I was 18 at the time
This game was all about Beckham. 1 assist and 1 goal to send England to the 2002 World Cup. Legendary.

D Beckham was so popular in India those days in early 2000s . Ronaldo and Rivaldo too .. then came the C Ronaldo and Messi s' .. Time truly flies
greece played very brave here and im saying this as a turkish from germany but for england it didnt make it better because germany was placed first in the WC 2002 groups even they were behind england in the qualifiers
the referee was very anxious for england to score
Not sure you know anxious means. Anxious means you have a sense of anxiety which is effectively panic. Keen, eagar or ardent are the words you're looking for.

Good game! Great memories, Greece were unlucky not to win though
I can't understand why England fans take any pride from this game. 0:49 testicle keeper
test the goalkeeper
Lol
This is also a testament to how brilliant a player Teddy Sherringham was
great at diving
for this match: congratulations referee!!!
"Well with players like David Beckham, you do feel there are certain moments of destiny."
I remember this game and Beckham's goal like it was couple years ago, not 18 years ago... Jesus...how time flies.
I bet the rest of the World shuddered when they knew Beckham was taking the free kick. This was way more entertaining than it is now. :(
i'm not defending andy gray, but sky sports commentary has been piss poor since he left.
So has FIFA
Beckham dragged England through that match. Fabulous performance.
the two fouls given to England that'd originated the two goals were unbelievably suspicious!!!
Nicely edited video. Gave me a real sense of the pace of the game.
Bogus foul, but what a goal!
"YES!!!"
*Remembers he can't be biased*
"Yes, For England!"
I have an RE project in for tomorrow on this. I'm doing it now!!
I couldn`t believe how people particularly the media took Greece so lightly at the time, they were clearly a team on the up but even prior to the 2004 Euros which they won the bookies had them at 80-1 outsiders. We got away with one here.
Beckham hit 21 free kicks before he scored at the 22th!!!!
Referee was a total disgrace...
Well, 3 years later justice was served.
0:25 David Platt in the stands

Yes, that is the other sad aspect of it, those young players missing out on the experience of a lifetime, being & playing with true champions.
Lmao you're an old forgotten piece of shit.
I wanted the greeks to win as well, being english. Well done greece for scoring 2 goals at least!
Thank you. I don't know if you are english or jewish, but even though both contributed a lot to civilization, us Greeks did all the dirty work.

Beckham scored the free kick, but Teddy won it and scored the first goal. Most definitely the Teddy and Beckham show.
8:47 bruhhhhh are you kidding is that a freaking foul? Or the football is dirty
I still get goosebumps when Beckham scores, 11 years on.
He deserves a knighthood just for this goal. He wasn't the most technically gifted footballer England as ever produced but he was an absolute grafter on the pitch and hes freekick ability was second to none. An all time great and a national hero...

didnt greece go on to win the euro's two years later?
ya they did, and England can't win squat!
greg oscar the fuck kinda shitty logic is that... the coach doesn't have to be the same nationality as the team.
#joel.. that's going around a lot at the moment mate... brexit etc.
greg oscar Lol you’re fucking stupid.
C'mon.. You're overstating the importance of a coach a little. Once the 90 minutes start, the coach's role is minimal.
This was the time when Beckham was the best free kick striker in the world, every free kick at a good position was 50-50 for a goal. great goal but there was NO foul however.Long live teddy serinham
Το φάουλ που έκανε ο σερταριδης πάνω στον Μπέκαμ δεν ήταν !!!
i remember that day when I was on my knees waiting for tthe free kick and when he scored I ran every where cheering , what an fantastic player and a great freekick by David Beckham
back in the days when englands squad team was powerful and much more ability on the shots against goal....
The Greek players were more talented than British, but they were unlucky because they grow up in Greece and is not so easy to be professional there.
nigel martin made big contribution in this match too...
Tagging this match as the "Joy of Old Trafford" for England when they qualified to World Cup 2002.
ja i get teary e xxxxxx
arguably, most recognized footballer in the world
i remember this match... i was 12 years old, ahh old good time :)
This video was a treat to say the least. Thanks #ClassicEngland
This is about the 25th time ive watched this.
He cleaned his name after game vs argentina.
And ye huge respect to Backham for his effort
jesus, Teddy Sheringham warming up on a random bit of fence makes this look retro already.

You wrote this in 2018 - really? This game is remembered for one reason and one reason only lol
Only for davids goal.
No foul before either of the goals, sadly.
+f vr you lose some you win some
You can't really see if the second one is a foul, maybe a push in the back
greece's second goal was offside obivously ..
@@Muhammet93fb you,'re right
he was a great captain, i really hoped we'd won the cup for him
I didn't know George Clooney was a goalkeeper,
.

Teddy was always old.
He was old when he played for Tottenham
@applemask it's Nigel Martyn who was in the England goal!
Esse jogo foi épico...
In that moment.. Who could imagine that England was playing againts the next European champions?
Greece better team they were team in waiting too win euro 2004
Bit harsh, I fail to spot what you're referring to...
And in hindsight, the commentary on THAT goal was so, so bad.
Don't disrespect Martin.
it was unbelievable thats why
+MrShtiv True. I think Martin Tyler is ridiculously overrated. He just talks and talks and talks. And misses key moments! I think Motson's commentary on this game is far superior.
Agree. And the first England goal was even worse commentary
Motson's on the BBC was good
the chance at 4:10 - greece should have buried england with that chance. he had so much time and space. the england defender literally walked up to defend .
and what titles do you have in basketball?? im just asking because its the second most recognisable sport.. of course you knew that though...
There's no need to compare England with Greece in football.Every nation has its own best sport.

hahaha, yeah Nikopolidis kinda looks like George Clooney
Was Nikopolidis ever young, or was he born old :P :D

We weren't going to the play offs we were going home - it was massive!
But was not a foul
Ither of the two goals for England
Very nice job reff!
One of the best matches in England’s history! This is one of those that will always be looked back on as amazing. I miss David Beckham now!
The beginning of Greece 2004...
England had three players in this match: David Seaman, David Beckham and Teddy Sheringham when he came on. No-one else turned up.
even the best ever captain! or the best player
Does anybody knows where to watch this match online , full of course
Soft free-kick decision that
Greeve outplayed England this day. England struggling against greece
What a free kick from becks
"Move Teddy.... I got this..."
TWO MAN UTD PLAYER...WHAT A LEGENDS :)
+secija1 Sheringham's a yid through and through.
How old is Sheringham now? if he was 35 then and Andy Cole was still playing then he must be at leat 68.
"Oooh, 36th minutes Greeks scored with Achristeas, soorry Charisteas!!!😁😄
