    The orange line that appears on terrain to indicate the depth of the cursor is such an ingenious idea. So simple and effective.
    Also, to mitigate the problem with the orbit command (the ship turns so slowly it can't keep up with the orbit and can't turn to face the focus of the orbit), you can reduce the throttle or make the orbit larger. The ship won't need to turn as quickly and will be able to keep up with the orbit.
    A place I use orbits a lot is when I want a ship to remain in one place, but just having the ship sit there makes it easy to hit. An orbit command keeps the ship moving and a harder target for long-range shots.

      Ill have to try that the next time I use orbit. What size of orbit do you use to have it loitter in one place?

    Thanks for the updated guide JDee.
    I have one pedantic nerd correction: “six degrees of freedom” refers to the three linear degrees of freedom and the three rotational degrees of freedom. Here’s a description and some common names for each degree of freedom in Cartesian space, in no particular order:
    Forward/backward (x axis)
    Side-to-side (y axis)
    Up/down (z axis)
    Rotation around the z axis (Yaw, pan, C axis, azimuth, theta (θ))
    Rotation around the y axis (Pitch, tilt, B axis, elevation, phi (φ))
    Rotation around the x axis (Roll, A axis)

    Note that the 6 degrees of freedom in a 3D space are: Movement along the X axis, movement along the Y axis, movement along the Z axis, rotating around the X axis, rotating around the Y axis, and finally rotating around the Z axis.
    Bodies constricted to a 2D space have 3 degrees of freedom: 2 linear and 1 rotational.

    I just spent 3/4 of a match with one of my ships canted at a wacky angle because I didn't realize roll orders persisted between movement commands. Helps to explain why she caused less than half the damage of her sister that was never more than 400 meters away, besides her gun plotting center getting wrecked relatively early on.

    What i have learned about orbiting is that it allows you to evenly distribute damage across ship, which gives far more time for DC team to repair modules. When you're just heading forward and you have entire side open to enemy - you will take a lot of damage on one side.
    But during orbiting you're switching sides and change angle which may help you to ricochet some of the shots. Orbiting ships can even confuse incoming fire because you're either closer or farther away from them. When both your position and distance changes at the same time - more shots may fly by your ship even if your ship was targeted by "Bullseye". Because orbiting also changes your heading, incoming shells could ricochet while ship keep evading shots.
    You will get damage into engines, DC team will repair it during orbit while enemy will keep evenly distribute damage across your ship. And finally, you have about 10 seconds during your main engines working on full power to confuse your opponent even more by suddenly getting away from the orbit in different direction at full speed. Speaking of speed. During orbit your main engines will work at full power so it makes sense to finish orbit with throttle FLANK speed and maneuver EVADE. It's a defensive option for moments when you need to hold point in the open and have enough time and space to get momentum. One thing to mention, if you want to benefit from orbiting, you really need to invest more point into mount gyros. Because PDT and guns will need to keep up with your shenanigan.
    It can also be used as offensive option to ambush enemy behind the rock while moving at full speed and flanking it from a side. This will take a much longer orbit trajectory so you have to micro the whole process to not expose yourself. But so far this seems as the best way to ambush fleets behind the rock at point blank. Doing it by placing movement orders will open your ships vulnerable sides to fire or it will take too much time to change direction after that. Moving by orbit will allow you to ambush enemy fleets at full speed and with best angle of attack. Or you can use it to simply trade shots with enemy by distributing incoming damage with a chance to get new angle of attack on enemy.
    Not ideal option if you need to micro more than 3 ships. As it requires micro.

    It's worth pointing out that the space in Nebulous is NOT vacuum. Each ship suffers drag as it moves relative to the map, though as far as I can tell the drag force isn't dependant on speed.

    • @windoverwaves6781
      @windoverwaves6781 ปีที่แล้ว

      Huh, I guess that's why ships have a top speed?

    • @admiralcasperr
      @admiralcasperr ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@windoverwaves6781 something like that. It's an excuse to facilitate this slow gameplay with positioning and buildup and the comparatively quick resolution of fire exchanges.

    • @windoverwaves6781
      @windoverwaves6781 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sense. It's either that or make the maps big and give missiles the range of light-seconds, and that'll just be boring visually

    I like the whole idea of this game. The in game tutorials are generally speaking good. But i tried to play a little and was all about jamming messages. I am pretty sure that sooner or later if i put the time i will get it, but it is extremely frustrating and not really so much fun at this point. I have the feeling the tutorial about that particular fell short. That is why i like players tutorials better.

    • @peterstedman6140

      I think jamming is overtuned and kinda overpowered in the latest balance update, so it makes sense you were surprised by how widespread it is

    13:00 When you orbit, your ship's orientation does not stay broadside to the center. But I just noticed in Devlog 10 he said it was supposed to do this.
    Was it changed?

      @Recon777x 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JDeeGaming Thanks. I'd be interested in hearing about that. Seems a useful feature, as "circle strafing" is universally advantageous. Keeps weapons at a fixed bearing and distance while keeping yourself moving at an angle to avoid long distance shots, unable to lead you as a target.

    • @JDeeGaming
      @JDeeGaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Recon777x So it has to do with manoeuvrability of the ship and its ability to turn. Im going to do a small vid testing the ships in the next few days to visualise it.

    • @Recon777x
      @Recon777x 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JDeeGaming Aha... So the next question is: Does a ship turn slower if you set the drive to a slower speed like 1/3?
      Because it would be handy to have your ship turn just as fast even if the linear max velocity goes down.
      Plus you could circle strafe a target using orbit. ^_^

    15:20 How did you give a command to an enemy ship?

    • @Durendal_exe
      @Durendal_exe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      F2 for console. The relevant commands are 'dbgBotPause true' 'dbgBotIdleAllUnits' and 'dbgEnableEnemyControl true' The first stops bots from giving orders, the second clears any orders they have, the third lets you control them.

      There's a lock mouse horizontal (h) direction when trying plot a move to make it easier (all in game mouse tooltips)
      it's as easy as cutting a cake, choose where to cut the top of cake, then slice how far down you want to go.
