To me, it's hard to always be on the right side of issues. I celebrate 4th of July, although I'm doing research on the history of it. One reason is for the festivities that take place and also for the independence of the United States. I asked myself should a black person celebrate this holiday? Only answer I come up with is that it is true that the U.S. has roots in dispicable crimes against minorities, BUT it is also a country developing into a land of equality for all it's citizens. I know this country still have a long way to go but it has surpassed it's roots. The speech from Frederick Douglass was important to get across during his lifetime. Also, I'm not sure if he disliked White people but he married a white woman. Being born a slave and becoming a slavery abolitionist, what do you think people thought of that during his lifetime? I just think it's hard to be on the right side (Popular Opinion) all the time.

Sure where better than when Dougles gave this speech but we still are standing on thin ice as to maintaing this democracy. My generation ( 1960 born) has completely failed to move the struggle forward. Many of us have improved INDIVIDUALLY but as an people we've failed. If you read the MLK speech on August 28, 1963, pay close attention to the first part. The Media and politicians love the last part , it makes them feel good. However the first part is exactly what Frederick Douglas was saying in his speech. It is revealing of the need for economic justice as well as Civil Rights. I find it saddening that we even have to protest for Civil or Human Rights in 1963 or 2020. Especially, since we love to claim to be The World's Greatest Democracy. The Younger generation is making use proud as they're energized and taking this struggle to the streets. We've tried praying, serving & dying in the military, integration and trusting our political leaders ( both parties). All to end up in 2020, needing the brutal " lynching " of George Floyd and senseless " execution of Breannoa Taylor by her city Government to motivate the next generation to action. Many of the demands of the Protesters have been sitting in our Federal , State & Local legislative branches. It is this reason why I don't see a political solution to these protest. We've tried that since 1865 and the results haven't been a total failure but leaves much still undone. I won't be spending my 4th of July celebrating anything , in fact on 7th of July I will participate in a National Blackout Day. No money will I spend on that day unless it is in Black businesses. I plan on just working on home projects and reading and reflecting on LIFE. Again thank you Young People in the streets and that appreciation goes for All those in the streets. Don't let this distract you from the the fact that in 1966, Al Bundy scored four touchdowns in a single game while playing for the Polk High School Panthers in the 1966 city championship game versus Andrew Johnson High School, including the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds against his old nemesis,"Bubba".

Never in my life have I observed such a multiracial, sexual orientation, , gender diverse, age diversity and class diversity coming together as one.
Keep on Pushing!!!!

Yes. Also check out the Minister Louis Farrakhan's he's having in July 4.
Be healthy 🌿
"What is July 4th to slave?"...................It wasn't made for the slave nor the Indian.
Correct.
It did not apply to NON WHITES.
🔥🔥
Don't let this distract you from the the fact that in 1966, Al Bundy scored four touchdowns in a single game while playing for the Polk High School Panthers in the 1966 city championship game versus Andrew Johnson High School, including the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds against his old nemesis,"Bubba".
Zinn edited 18 pages into 1 and moved a paragraph to another spot. I highly recommend reading the original. President Fillmore was in attendance at this event and the Fugitive Slave Law had recently been passed in 1850.
Amazing
Its' amazing! I'm reading Angela Davis book 'woman, class and race' and discovered this character Frederick Douglass. We desperately need a brand new abolitionist movement
Powerful
"within the pale"
VERY pointed choice of words
Have you been Latino at a 4th of July party since Trump!? They look at us like, WTF are you doing here!? My family has been called rapist and theifs, at a 4th celebration! This past years, have been hard for us of color!💙🙏
Love it
Wow!
I want to give, I want to live❤️
Let it be known
Why do you never make an attempt to unifying all Americans?
We tried.
@SoilaSøila i aggree, we must be patient and wait for the lord to come and unify us
hard to unify something when it’s broken
Ask that same question to the orange man baby?
Right, why can't black people and other people of color just realize that white men are better and therefore must rule over them. Why do they get upset when we let our cops murder them in the street? They need to chill and recognize their own inferiority so us good white folk can go to bbq and watch football and not have to feel guilty about treating their black skin as suspect, because it is.(sarcasm. and the fact that I need to point out that this is sarcasm is why we can't come together. some things can't be compromised.)
a GREAT AMERICAN
i look forward to seeing his statue in the new garden of great americans
These words apply to us white poor and middle class almost as much today as they did to slaves then. The OLIGARCHY had us living their boots
How true how true!
AMEN
Have we reached LIBERTY? a Californian was challenging me about my geographic coming to the USA. Such is the people who support Dump. To ignorance, disdain. Allow her to keep her ignorance when it comes to me; however, set her free in understanding Visionaries achieved for this top of the World Free Country.
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!
The slaves were freed.
Very articulate. Did a white person help write that scorcher barn burning speech?
.
Amy, I have a request - is it possible to bring or add Brian Tyler on to your program. He would make a valuable contribution to DN.
Happy birthday America!🇺🇸

Still do not how to Vote?
Vote?
Your vote doesn’t mean anything anymore.
Trump is listening to this and thinking Frederick Douglass voiced Mufasa in the Lion King.
T.K was right about a lot of things
Hey African American/Canadian sisters and brothers, stop loving Jesus, he doesn't love you back. Also, don't you think the practice of worshipping the god of your ancestors' slaveholders is humiliating, and in doing so, dishonours them?
Your wrong about that m friend.I used to think that too. That is until I found out that Black People are the only people mentioned in the Bible that includes Jesus himself. Its our history that the White Man accepted and told as his own.Seriously look into it.
@TheHomoludens Zionist!? I'm anti Judaism, anti Christianity, and anti Islam!
We prefer to celebrate the Roswell Crash, July 4th, 1947.
Terrifyingly, slavery still exists on our planet, and news of the stolen is barely leaked, let alone covered by the press. Think of those poor schoolgirls, hundreds of whom were kidnapped by the Boka Haram, then sold into literal enslavement. Who "bought" them? Why is this somehow not eliminated from societies everywhere? We need to uplift our consciousness and heal, I still believe we can! Peace ☆Lv
