WHAT IF: This Unreleased Beatles Song On 'Revolver'?

  • In the 1970s, 150 hours of Beatles rehearsal tapes recorded for the "Let It Be" documentary were stolen and leaked onto the black market. 30 years later these 'Nagra reels' were recovered by British and Dutch police during an intercontinental sting called "Operation Acetone." In 2021, some of these recordings were used for Peter Jackson's "Get Back" docuseries. A holy grail of rare and abandoned Beatles music remains on the cutting room floor.

I toyed with this a little, by changing my TH-cam playback settings from normal speed to X2 speed, to hear what it would sound like at double tempo. With the full George Martin treatment and a middle 8 section by John or Paul, it could have been a single (at double tempo). John complained that All Things Must Pass was too slow and like a dirge. So, I think he would have wanted this sped up. Just my take on it.

It would have been great if the Beatles would have worked on it and I think that song probably could’ve been a masterpiece and probably a hit a lot of the songs that the Beatles played around with which they never got to record could’ve been big hits it’s too bad that George Harrison didn’t record it on any of the solo albums I think it would’ve worked well, on either all things must Pass or even living in the material world.

George was really emerging as a brilliant songwriter during the final years as a Beatle (think “Something”, one of the most beautiful Beatles songs ever written.). It was even more apparent in his final years on this Earth, the Traveling Wilburys being the prime example. Think what both he & John might have created had they both lived longer. The timbre and quality of the vocal is very, very close to what George's voice sounded like. It's very easy to imagine him singing over this arrangement, which is also very much in line with how he produced many of his ballads (this reminds me a great deal of "Be Here Now" from "Living In The Material World"). Add in a slide guitar in George's style (which no one has since equaled) and it would be indistinguishable from what the finished track would've sounded like. Nice work.

In the video, Brad Lyda said... On this day (January 28th) we see George Harrison... pitch a trio of new Harrisongs: Old Brown Shoe, Something and All Things Must Pass.
While the 28th was the first day that George brought in "Something"... he had done a run through of "Old Brown Shoe" the day before (on January 27th). And George had done his first run through of "All Things Must Pass" on the very first day of this project (back on January 2nd). In fact, ATMP was the second song that anyone played on that first day. They had worked on "All Thing Must Pass" on four of the first five days of the "Get Back" project - and had done 58 takes of the song through January 8th.
George had brought in 5 other songs before January 28th including... Let It Down, Hear Me Lord, For You Blue, I Me Mine and Isn't It A Pity.
I've heard many people say that the main reason George quit the group on January 10th - was because John & Paul were not spending any time on George's songs. But that just was not the case. Through January 9th (the first 6 days of the project)... the group had spent time on five of George's songs - with 58 takes of "All Things Must Pass", 41 takes of "I Me Mine", 18 takes of "For You Blue", 8 takes of "Hear Me Lord" and 1 of "Let It Down".

@@deansongs It was called Thirty Days. I think it was issued by the Vigotone bootleg label in the early 2000s. It was sourced from the infamous stolen Nagra camera sound reels and was essentially the musical performances from the Get Back sessions with all of the in between chats and other non musical stuff edited out and separated into their own tracks. If I remember correctly, things like the noisy jams with Yoko Ono and stuff like that we’re also missing. Not all of the musical performances were contained there in. But a lot of it was there. If you’re looking to find something like this, I recommend the A/B Road digital collection because it is far more complete, easier to find and in better quality, again if I remember correctly. 30 days is just what was available to me as a teenager during that period.

The Beatles often took pieces from multiple songs to create a for Frankensteins, sometimes using one as the verse and the other as a bridge, all the time and making some changes in the music by lowering your tone real speed and merging two different songs. When I hear this, I’m here in a little bit of I want to tell you in the tune. Also love you to!! That could be due to George Harrison‘s writing style. He has some of the best Beatles songs ever written, but earlier he had a tendency to not know when to stop moving in one direction. What I always loved about him was his use of color chords. Especially when I suggested for McCartney Lennon pieces. This is a great site you have an eye like that you took the time to finish the songs yourself. I appreciate that and it’s a lot of fun

Wow I remember when they recovered those tapes and never heard about it again. Was this song lost until they found the tapes? It is very beautiful and very Harrison sounding. IMO it sounds like it has sort of the eastern Indian influence in the descending piano part. A Fantastic job done to bring this song to light! Harrison performed this unreleased song with the Beatles in January of 1969 during the 'Get Back' sessions. However, because the style and feel of the composition more closely resemble his Rubber Soul/Revolver output, it is generally believed George probably composed the piece circa 1965-66. What do you think?

    • @beebeesmith
      @beebeesmith ปีที่แล้ว +1

To be honest I don’t study what came where and when, it’s just the whole song is similar to other songs. That is a problem for many song writers, they unwittingly recreate the melodic phrasing both in vocal style and backing melody. As an amateur song writer who enters songs into forum contests I hear it time and time again from other regular contributors. I mostly avoid some of that situation by using different vocalists, because I don’t sing well. I saw the Beatles live in Plymouth Devon, long, long time ago. 😂 Harrison wrote some great songs but imo is guilty of a lot of similar mediocrity.

How wrong you are...How mistaken. Do you really believe George was such an idiot? Because only an idiot would remain so for so long in a band that would not let him grow. Man, just think. Where was him when he grew so much? With The Beatles. Not only with them, but he was one of them! He was a Beatle! And he was free...He even recorded composed for a soundtrack of a movie in 1967. George was not a composer when he joined Quarry Men. He was not contracted to be a composer because he was not one. He joined as the lead guitar player! And even so he not only was in the front in all concerts, just like John and Paul, as he also could sing as lead singer at least twice...As he could not compose yet, or would delay a lot to bring a new song, he used to sing songs by other composers. Only in 1966 he started being more inspired.
They had an oral agreement, Ted. Nobody could not anything without the permission of all of them. So, when it was decided most songs would be by Lennon and McCartney, he agreed! Sure, because not even him knew he would be such a good composer later. And they were already thinking in having more space for George in 1969...Only they decided to break up instead. John decided.
Now take a look at the other bands to see i the lead guitar players had the same chance as George. How many songs were sung by Keith Richards? I think only one. And by Brian Jones? not a single one. The Beatles was the only band where the four were stars. And if George had never been a Beatle I doubt we would have ever heard about him.
He was able to have a solo career, only because of his Beatle days. man. And though he was good solo, not as good as when he was a Beatle. But...all of them were like that. Good song here and there but not a whole album full of beauty like The Beatles album.
Time to start respecting George. Because this story of him being the victim of two dictators it not only a lie. It is disrespect to George himself. He was not a idiot at all.

He put a lot of effort into improving his abilities, including studying with Ravi Shankar and no doubt taking a lot of guidance from best mate Eric Clapton when hanging out. The difference in the quality of his guitar playing between 1963 and 1970 is pretty outstanding.

Beautiful! It almost breaks my heart thinking about how George Harrison was discouraged by John and Paul and producer George Martin with writing songs. Harrison was clearly on a different, more cosmic plane than the rest of them. Because he didn't have the forceful personality as the others, his songs were all too often pushed aside. But I've always held the opinion that his songs were just as good as the other Beatles, especially toward the final years of the band. In fact, it's really a crime that "Not Guilty" got pushed off The White Album to make room for throwaway tracks like "Wild Honey Pie" and "Bungalow Bill."
