Did you say onion sets? Start them from seed! You will be way more successful and it’s the perfect time to start them now!

You shouldn’t really disturb the grounds in winter because of the little animals, bugs and worms who are hibernating. You should start things like that from march onwards if the temperature are about a week 10 degrees. That’s when the wake up and move on. I didn’t realise that myself and always itch doing something like this in winter but now I brace myself. But you have done a great job since starting getting that plot to the stage where you are at now.

I didn't think about that thanks just get carried away with sorting the plot hopefully this will be the last winter I need to do big moves like this. Thank you the plot is slowly getting there

@@petro3441 I just need to keep it clean from all the leaves in autumn. And hopefully not many weeds come in-between the cracks. Definitely be nice to stand somewhere with no mud tho

@JacobsonFamilyAllotment you can try coarse salt in the cracks for killing the weeds.

Eat the carrot it will become natural fine! Your path will work ok, can’t get everything perfect in a garden. It will be good to move all those slabs soon. For compost, have you looked into buying in bulk instead of in bags. Bulk buying is so much cheaper. Here we can buy used mushrooms compost by the cubic yard (I think it’s about 25 pounds a cubic yd, converted from Canadian$). Onion bed looks fine. Don’t fret too much about the onions. It’s the new growth that you need to look at (actually I would just let them grow, not worry about them any more and just get on with planting other stuff). Although technically you have to wash your pots I have actually never done that, well just rinsed under a tap, and I have not had a problem. Sure you loose a few plants once in a while but as you have seen you loose more to cutworms and other pests. Just plant a few more than you need and you will be fine. Typically people are way too precious with their plants - these beings are strong/resilient they will survive despite what we do - just make the growing conditions the best that you can give them water (not too much), organic matter (as much as you can afford) and give them the light conditions that they need. If you have enough organic matter and a layer of mulch (shredded leaves, compost etc.) you won’t need to even worry about water unless you get a drought for a prolonged period of time. I guess the last thing is that you are going to have some failures no matter how careful you are. You will learn and improve over time. Thanks for sharing your latest efforts:)

I just didn't trust the carrot with the top being squashed not sure if I did it or something else. I think I might be able to get some bulk compost or topsoil will have a shop around first. Hopefully you are right about the onions they did seem to be still growing so will let them crack on. Washing the pot had to be done there was so much dirt slugs and snails in them I couldn't use them as they were next time maybe just a spray down.
I have to get tougher with my plants and expect some to die I always feed bad when I have sown too many and have to kill off the seedlings I don't need 😂.
Thanks for watching glad your enjoying

@ thanks for the comments and I do understand. With regards to killing excess seedlings - you have to be draconian. Planting too many seeds is a common thing that most of us do but you have to just bite the bullet and and thin and thin again after a short spell to ensure that you have seedlings growing. If you don’t thin out sufficiently your growth and yields will suffer.
When you have established your no dig beds with plenty of compost and are covered with mulch (not wood chips) you will be able to grow plants closer together and even be able to repeatedly plant the same crops year after year in the exact same beds (see Charles Dowding) but whilst your soil is still not up to snuff you will need to be very careful with spacing - that’s why it makes sense to bring in a larger amount of compost at the start. If you can’t afford that then either do only some of your beds OR put a lot of compost just where your plants are and then build up over the years. Certainly buying bulk compost will move you more quickly to your final goals of full no-dig if you are short of funds (which most people are).
Huw Richard’s has advocated using wood hip paths to make compost. I have done this too. You can speed up this process if you put all your coffee grounds (especially if you have a friendly cafe or two) right on the paths and then also drop weeds (no seeds and definitely no perennial roots) on the paths. In your climate you should be able to make enough compost on a 24 inch path that’s 8 feet long to give one inch of compost on two 3ft by 8ft beds) in a year. Keep making your own compost, bring in what you can afford and you will soon be at a great place. Of course, if you move to Scotland in a couple of years you will have to start again but these first experiences will mean that you are so much further ahead the next time - sort of like an apprenticeship :). Please keep the great videos coming !
