So, in writing (with others) a piece called 'Scallop Fiesta', there's this section we call the 'Dance of Scallops' and I casually mentioned that it might be nice to include some castanets to which Laurel responded "Castanets! oh my god brilliant!". ...I had no clue. Thanks for this, it's a big help. LOL Now all I have to do is write them into the score.
I absolutely love this video ! As a pianist-composer I always look for enhancing parts in my orchestral scores. I already “improved” castanets part in my symphonic poem right after digesting your extremely informative presentation. You are great !!
I don't have one yet, (I'm planning on getting it for my birthday or Christmas.) but look for a castanets machine by LP. (Latin Percussion) It sounds pretty close to the paddle.
Not all paddle castanets work the same way. You can't do that with the Epsteins. You can with the Black Swamps but the strap may break. You can see in the video the shake castanet machine I made for this purpose. The best rolls are done on your leg with 2 castanets coordinated as a roll.
@@rickdior right, they only claim to have grenadillo and rosewood on the site. The grenadillo has three pitches high, lower and low. Assuming these are the grenadillo high unless they don’t make ebony anymore?

Nice one, Rick!
Thanks... ☝️😎
Amazing technique and really we’ll explained thanks for sharing!
Also Tchaikovsky's Spanish dances in "Swan Lake" & "Nutcracker".

I would recommend the Black Swamp Machine which you can use with any paddle castanets.
Thanks for the video! Is it "ok" to just shake a castanet back and forth to get a trill (without striking it against your leg)?

@@rickdior Thank you very much! You saved me from making a performer angry by requesting something that might damage the instrument!
Hi there, could you please tell me what brand of castanets you are using in this video for the machine and handle castanets? Thank you.
Epstein and Black Swamp.
I made the machine version myself.
Which exact model are those ebony ones? I’m looking at Frank Epsteins website and trying to determine the differences. Thanks!
Yes these are ebony

Mine are very old.
They may not use ebony any more as it is very expensive and rare.
