I hope peter today out there never tries to tell his students or friends of any memories of "beating" sakad; peter got his ass whipped here and looked like an absolute fool trying to shake it off in the ring as he was getting outclassed. I dunno why Cunningham won (did he?) but at least his was one of the better defenses against Muay Thai that I’ve seen. Usually Thai fighters just pulp the opponents of other standing martial arts to an extent that they can’t remain standing towards the end.
Cunningham is the best american kickboxer to handle being kick in the legs by a Thai: usually they win by Tko. Judges Nelson Hamilton and Cecil Peoples are still active to this day.
Compared to well known Thai boxers, Saked did nothing at all. Cunningham isn’t up to par with high grade Thai boxers at all, but he survived this fight pretty strong and cocky, something most kick boxers rarely have a chance to do against skilled Muay Thai practitioners.
This is a classic muay thai style vs kickboxing style..against the agile kickboxer fighter, all he have to do is to keep doing that low kick, it will add up and thus make the kickboxer slower the longer the fight drag on. Should the fight given a few more rounds it would be clearly shown the power of muay thai low kicks.
I would avoid fighting thai fighters just to escape that horrible catterwailing of the pipes playing. But clearly the judges were not watching, the Thai won .
It wasn't quite kickboxing rules, it was wka rules, which allowed punches and kicks to the whole body, no clinch knees, no throws, etc. definitely weighted against traditional muay thai but not strictly speaking standard kickboxing rules. Having said that, I scored it for Sakad, but if you liked flashy techniques and didn't recognize some of what was going on, I can see a judge scoring it for Peter.
