I like how Oda fleshed out Ace's backstories for the 20th anniversary. I think one of the things One Piece has over series is that a lot of characters' backstories and motives are portrayed with great details.
茂雄影山 yeah that's definitely a good thing. So many series you see characters introduced and then that's all you see about them. Really frustrating when you watch and read one piece and then go to other anime and they don't treat the characters the same way

Jordan you see a lot of backstories in naruto. There's one for basicly all hokages, hyuga family, other side characters in the main cast, gaara and a few people in the sand village, zabuza and company, etc. I don't feel the world building is as strong as in One Piece though.
Max Lee what i find annoying about that concept is it takes 20(ten of which will be flash backs) episodes to talk about one character who i don't even care about i just want the fighting to start

Masked Deuce is probably the one telling the story of Luffy, the Pirate King.
The last episode is him finishing reading the book he wrote in front of Ace's grave.
Id love to see maybe a 5-6 episode OVA about Ace's adventures up until he first joined White Beard

if deuce is still alive, i hope he gets to meet luffy. ace talked about luffy a lot to deuce and even deuce said in the novel that he'd love to meet luffy, the person ace left behind and whose will he carries. and deuce was ace's first real best friend and after reading the novels i feel like he knew ace the best.

Ace was never meant to be a follower, he's a natural leader like Luffy I feel like if he would have survived after the war he'd have the most potential for being one of the strongest characters in the series.

I remember, back when Dressarosa was pretty new, watching a theory that Ace had a past with Doflamingo due to the name of his crew and the fact that Law also had a crew named for a suit of cards
The main thing I have a problem with though is that a stranger was apparently able to find out Ace was Roger's son so easily? That was his deepest secret, very, very few people knew that as he barely told anyone. Garp knew since he was asked by Roger himself to take care of Ace, Dadan must have known too (and in connection probably the other bandits), Sabo and Luffy eventually knew, and in the series we saw how Ace told Whitebeard himself. Everyone else found that out when it was announced on his execution platform. But here some guy figured it out? That's my main issue. As for some other stuff I hope that's what the novel will cover, even though it's not being written by Oda, it should be good material. Look at the Naruto novels, those weren't written by Kishimoto but they were really well written, I'm hoping for the same thing here.

That makes more sense thank you for clarifying! 'Cause otherwise it just seemed like a what the fuck situation on how he'd know/find out! But if he's just making some offhanded comment (which yeah, still weird) but that's definitely a different situation. Especially since we saw how Ace acted as a kid when people would say things like that, he beat the shit out of them, so him reacting at least makes sense.
i get you, but i feel like since its deuce, it makes sense. he was the person closest to ace, and reading his thoughts, he knew ace the best out of anyone. he truly loved and cared about him and understood ace better than anyone else. after all he was ace's first real best friend and who stuck with him, writing his story, through the end. he saw ace's emotions on his dad being mentioned first hand, and putting pieces together, he figured it out. it makes sense since he is connected to ace the most

I'm actually happy that Robb Stark died.
It was his mistake; he cheated but Ace didn't cheat he was just avenging his friend.
That and Sean Bean dies in like everything he plays in almost so I saw that one coming lol. Though it was necessary to the plot. The main characters can't just do what they want and there be no consequences for their actions. Real world stuff in regular shows and anime

I've always looked at it that luffy and smoker have a similar relationship as Garp and Rodger had

You know's be cool? To see this animated as a special. Seriously, for all the filler/ stalling Toei does for OP; you'd think they would take the chance to animate the cover stories or heck, some of this canon material. Because, Ace is a popular character and why not celebrate him by revealing more about his past. :)

Kind of hope this gets used as a base for an OVA or movie. Rather than just retelling the manga, or making up something just flesh out some of these characters a bit more. Yeah, sure Shiki and Z are somehow both canon but in the grand scheme of the One Piece story do they really matter all that much outside of a name drop every now and then? If nothing else just make some specials on the cover stories because those at least can hint at other parts of the story later down the line.
Luffy is well known too in the three years since his departure. Keep in mind, it was less than three years (One Piece time) when Marineford happened. And it hasn't been too long in the One Piece world after Fishmen Island.
huh..i wonder what would have happened if Ace had recognised the Celestial Dragon who 'killed' Sabo while at Saobody. I mean I know Luffy apparently didn't know what celestial dragons were, but the visit to the Goa kingdom took a while, right? there's a good chance that Ace went out and saw the ship while Luffy was still unable to leave the house, even if he didn't hear the phrase Celestial Dragon. And where Luffy is shown forgetting basic/recent things quite often, it seems like Ace may have been unable to forget something like that.
anyway, off track, if its possible that he COULD have recognised that ship if it had been docked at Saobody at the same time as the Spade pirates, I wonder what he'd have done. Find out more from Skull? Attack the ship in a fit of rage now that he's stronger to have a chance at actually damaging something of the man who killed his brother? Try to find the man himself to kill, consequences be damned? Seize up in shock trying to process all this and prompt his crewmates to question him?
who knows, but it would certainly be interesting to consider...
Hopefully toei will adapt this in the anime. They could really use the bonus content to let the manga get ahead abit

This all sounds very interesting, but it's *really* disappointing that there was no reference to any of it even during Ace's final moments. Besides the flashback we didn't even see Ace's original crew members during the marineford war. You would think they would get some sort of notice for their former captain's execution.
Imagine Ace eating the fruit alone jumping into the sea thinking it would stop the burning. And in the end just end up drowning😂
This discussions are almost 3 yrs ago..and I wrote this after reading OP Manga chapter 977. I'm pretty sure that Masked Deuce are one of the members of the tobi roppo. But for now, I'm gonna wait until chapter 978, where I expecting Oda will finally reveal their identity.
What if masked deuce changed his name and wears a mask so he won't be identifiable by the WG. If so, he probably returned to his old life.

So I was thinking about how devil fruits are weak to water and df eaters can't swim. What happens if a df is thrown in the ocean? Does it stay in that fruit or does it transfer to another container? If it stays there could be a bunch of random fruit found under water

It would be very interesting to understand how the remnants of the Whiteboard Pirates are feeling after they lost both the Marineford War and the subsequent Payback War since in the Anime, they showed his face to be somewhat depressed or defeated or badass. Idk if Marco and the crew are strong willed to handle the defeat of their crew or if they are emotionally scarred from the death of their captain, the death of Ace, and their defeat from Blackbeard. I really like to see the full scope of Marco's powers though!! Any thoughts on what I mentioned?

Huh I never thought about if two people eat the same fruit. I mean we've seen Devil Fruits be openned before they were eaten like the Banna that Kukakku ate, and I think when the Soap Girl ate her she was using a fork and knife (who the hell eats fruit with a fork and knife?), but never wondered: what if they cut it up AND THEN shared it.
