This sixth part of the documentary series is about the celebration of Maroons’ Day from 1975 until 1985. From 1978 onwards, the celebration became bigger.
The Arron government refused to recognise Maroons’ Day as a national day in 1976. And it refused also to honour our request to grant at least all Maroons employed by the government special working exemption on Saturday 9 October of that year.
Remarkably, Minister Eddy Bruma of Economic Affairs had a different opinion, he did honour our request. He decided, after hearing me, to grant all Maroons under his ministry special working exemption on the day of the celebration of Maroons' Day in 1976.
