  • Join us for a special Memorial Service honoring the 80th Anniversary of the passing of Captain Frederic "Johnnie" Walker RN, one of Britain's greatest Navy heroes. This tribute took q place at the Walker Statue on Liverpool Pier Head.
Captain Frederick John Walker was a highly esteemed British naval officer and a leading anti-submarine warfare commander during World War II. Born on June 3, 1896, in Plymouth, England, he began his maritime career in 1909 with the Royal Navy. His significant contributions came during the Second World War, where he commanded several escort groups that protected Allied convoys from German U-boat attacks in the Battle of the Atlantic.
Under his command, Walker's escort groups sank 20 U-boats, securing the safe passage of crucial convoys across the Atlantic. In 1943, HMS Starling became his flagship, playing a vital role in the Allies' efforts to secure Atlantic supply lines. Walker's innovative tactics, including the formation of Support Groups, allowed his ships to actively hunt U-boats.
Tragically, Walker suffered a cerebral thrombosis on July 7, 1944, and died two days later at 48. His legacy as a courageous and innovative leader in anti-submarine warfare continues to inspire naval officers worldwide.
