About a month and a half in, our platoon Drill Sergeant took us to our barracks, locked the doors and brought out boxing gloves. Anyone that had an beef with anyone else boxed it out. I found out that day, im not much of a boxer, luckily the guy that didn't like me wasn't much of one either.
Always be the bigger man and talk it out. The DS will notice and bear some hidden respect for you. hell you can find a lot of videos of dudes in Basic getting into fights and filming it, heard stories from guys saying they saw hella fights go down, in bathrooms, laundry rooms etc etc
I've got a pretty old video on both of those topics but I may come up with a new spin on it. I'll have to rewatch them to remember what I said so I don't repeat myself lol
In my BT at FLW we had two guys who could not NOT piss eachother off, pushing, shoving, bringing morale down. They were warned, kept at it... and then: The Wedding. The drill sergeants stood them in front of the company and had a mock wedding, I DO, and they had to hold hands for the next few hours, walking. They did not fight after that.
The military is a job most of the time. You usually get weekends off. Youre just kind of nailed down to one area and sometimes you have to go to hot sandy places for months on end.
Made it to the end 👌🏻. Great video Matt, thanks for the information. I leave in three and a half weeks for basic. Your videos have really been helping me out to prepare for the Army life. And congrats for graduating college! I graduate next Friday from high school
When I did my mandatory service the fight was at least 7-14 days in prison and in the units in permanent operation readiness it was extremely serious, like months.
Alright so this is how we did it. We had something called the "red ring of death" if you had beef with someone at 2100 your beef with that other person would be settled. What is the "red ring of death"? Well at 2100 lights have to go out no matter what. If you want light you need to use either your red lens headlamp that you bought at the px or your L shape light that is issued to at reception (well not really issued you pretty much pay for it). So we'd all get are red lamps on make a circle (forgot to mention that all bets were made before 2100 hundred) all red lights are facing the middle of the circle. The two guys who have beef step up shake hands if they want and start fighting. No face shots all body shots first one to go down wins. All the fights we had only one person actually went down he got down in one knee and couldn't breathe. The rest of fights we're stopped because they were taking to long and they were tired. It was pretty cool though we never got caught we had people from different platoons coming in to our bay to check out the fight. Oh and we also had combatives which this guy talks about in the end. The drill sergeants let us call people out to fight. But you can only use jujitsu moves. Only way to win in there was a "make him pass out or tap out". I miss basic
I go to basic training in 2 weeks I’m a little nervous but I got threw boot camp i have a lot of confidence but I’ll definitely listen to what you said been watching ur videos for a couple months really helped me get threw boot camp listen to all your advice thanks bro👍🏻 for these amazing videos
Why is that? Considering that the Army while not as combat oriented as the marines are would still teach it considering how diverse it is, is bayonet training something they only teach in infantry school? Or have they opted out of bayonet training altogether?
Marcus Domkee i just graduated infantry osut at benning 2 weeks ago (yeah im a private), theyve gotten rid of bayonet training all together, but theres still the bayonet march for honor hill which is just the final 48 hrs of ftx. But bayonets arent used anymore
Debra Mcjunkin yes and no, for my company it was just one day that we did that. So some soldier gets onto the sand pit and calls out another soldier. He or she doesn't have to come out and fight but in the event it happens you slap a pool noodle at your opponent until you've had your fill of playground vengeance
That's probably the only time there's a Green Light to Hit Each other, at least it used to be, any other times might result in Disciplinary Action, and that is not Wise!
Well in 1990 we had DS picked "duels" and then it was open for any "grudge matches". Idk if every cycle or post did/does, but our cycle at Ft Leonard Wood definitely did.
when i was at basic, a guy waited till the other guy was in the shower ran up behind him and punched in the back of the head and he fell forward and busted his nose on the floor. memory is hazey because it was 99 so i dont really remember what is was about (probably something trivial and stupid). needless to say this was not o.k. and that guy was in alot of trouble
I guess i was lucky when i went to basic. Never even seen people want to fight. Our platoon seemed to respect each other right off the bat. Sure in permanent party (Duty Station) once in a blue moon maybe due to alcohol issues you might have to pop someone but only happened once with me and my friends pulled me away in seconds to make sure i didn't get in trouble. I guess young people now a days lack self discipline. NOT ALL but i see it more these days.
Yeah I've said that we had a guy butt stock somebody in the face and he didn't get kicked or get an article 15. Basically because they "made up". But I've heard of several people getting kicked or punished for small things
I went to boot camp in 1988. I recall 2 guys getting into a fight that got the whole platoon smoked for hours. After that if it even looked like a fight was going to start the entire platoon quickly intervened and shut it down!
I got my head pinned down under a drill sgt's foot while training for shooting behind cover for raising my head too high. I was 31 when I joined. If I had beaten the breaks off of a 20 year old private, I'd be in Leavenworth. Pick your battles wisely, gentlemen.
When I was in basic I joined as an 11B so maybe things work different in that job but I saw like 4 fist fights one of which I was in myself. Drill Sergeants never said anything but then again neither did any of us. Whatever happened happened and it was squashed on the spot but that was my experience and I just rolled with it.
When my granddad was in fighting then doing dumbest punishment they can come up with. When my dad was in waited for combatives and called the person. When I was in automatic article15 abd recycled
My bf at benning right now. He said someone got thrown through a wall at camp kelly (like you can see into the next room) and that there so many fights it almost seem like the ncos and drill where encouraging it because no one got in trouble. I was like “so no one got in trouble for the wall?” He was like “nah by the time they do room inspections we will be out of camp kelly and into reception we will be fine” 🤦🏼♀️
I can answer that question 😂, just don’t let your drill sergeant even sense the lightest disagreement or unspoken tension between you and someone else because that person is going to be your battle buddy for the remaining of BCT 😖😫

I remember some of the arguments at Basic, they were some stupid things to argue about, like who is going to wax the floor in the Bay. There was only a few. Maybe the right way to use a mop or something. At AIT there was one fight over the use of the Clothes Dryer, one private was from a different platoon and was told to guard the dryer for his platoon, the other private had his clothes in the dryer, the private guarding the dryer got knocked out so the other private could get his clothes out. It was between two races of private so there was some tension between the blacks and whites for a moment because the black got knocked out, but it wasnt a racial quarrel the white private wanted his clothes the other private took a swing at him for trying to get his clothes , so the white private knocked the other private out. One private got drunk and snuck in the bay during AIT , he got caught being drunk by the fireguard and took a swing at him, the fireguard knocked him out , then the drunk private ended up on court martial trial.
We had a few fights, but nothing serious. After trading a few blows, the situation usually diffused itself and everyone went on about their day. According to what we would tell the DSs, you would think that stairs and doors roam the base just looking for asses to kick

Super late to the party, but I made it to the end. I can't remember which of your other videos had an 'Easter egg' ending too, but it's kind of cool. Like the Marvel movies.
My son is very bad tempered and I felt that going into the military will help him. I just got a call from him while he is still in reception, and he says he is having problems with his temper and is getting into fights. The d I told him if he continued the next time he's going to be put in military jail or get kicked out! He's only been there two weeks and is in quarantine. I am shocked! I didn't think the military would give up on their guys that quickly! I don't know a whole lot of detail as his phone calls are only 3 minutes long. I've heard from him three times so far. He will call me this Sunday. I'm a mom and of course my momma heart is worried. is it true that he can be sent to military jail or kicked out this early? Thank you so much in advance! BTW... He is one of your followers. Before he left to BCT he suggested that I check your TH-cam channel out. You could shed light on a lot of questions I may have. Again thank you
Only one time I can remember when a recruit was coughing a lot throughout the night due to a cold or flu she had, another recruit got pissed and started angrily moaning about that she wouldn't be able to sleep while having to hear someone else cough and cough, the two almost got into an argument until one of the DS I guess heard the commotion and walked in to see what was going on, the DS calmly and quickly diffused the situation and ordered the sick private along with her battle buddy to just go sleep in the office downstairs next to the DS's office. It's not just the guys and their "testosterone," females are usually alot worse when they get at it with each other, and females really do tend to get much less tolerant with each other and also the females fight more over small, insignificant details and I even heard a DS one time said that believe it or not, Drill Sergeants try not to have to work much with the females and/or try to work with them as minimal as possible as they tend to be more sensitive and ritraff, sometimes even stubborn in following orders and directions.
Thanks for the video leaving for fort jackson sc jan 14th. Any advice getting through basic, I'm in good shape just worried about the run, and how do you become platoon leader?
In the TACP we did fist fighting all the time. We would all be sitting at a table relaxing, and someone would come up and kick us out of our chair and punch our lights out. We called fighting... training... And if YOU got punched out then its your fault, lack of real time situational awareness!!! Not being aware WILL get you killed in combat!!! Our commander allowed us to fight, in fact he totally supported fighting! In fact our commander would sometime walk by and deck one of us... then we would get chew out for NOT exercising situational awareness!!! Hahahaha it was FUN!!!
Did you ever do something like we used in Seido Karate - each guy faced a partner and their right hand was held out flat and held by the other guys left hand - the idea was to slap the partners face and stop them slapping yours - first one to get in three slaps wins - that was quite good for settling arguments/aggro.
I just finish basic at fort Benning and let me just say Sunday is fight night. Someone has beef yall settle it by fighting. Even our drill Sargent came in during fight night and he wanted to see all the fights. My mos is 11b so maybe that’s why they don’t care about fights.
I remember when i was at fort benning we brought the mats out and we would just wrestle and see who out our had the upper body strength and just wrestle
Can you tell me some of the qualities of a good leader for boots? As an older guy applying for selection I suspect I'll probably get placed in a leadership role at some point, and I'm trying to prepare ahead of time so that I don't let the guys down.
From b 3/47 we didn't have problems like that. We followed the program if we got smoked, that is what it was, I came in 160 left 225 but we weren't f ups just liked the training.
Thanks for the vid. Especially helpful. Got a question: how does someone be a platoon leader/leadership position? Why do they get chosen? And how does someone stay humble?
What MOS were u intended to be after basic an AIT? Because at Sand Hill, F CO. 2/58 our policy is that if two people wanted to get down it would be in the laundry room after lights out. Scuffles would be broken up cuz that would get us all smoked. But G.O.D I talked to people from every platoon that confirmed for me that their DS just like mine, basically said something of long the lines of 'There will be no fighting. But what happens in our platoon stays in our platoon.' I remember asking a kid from 4th platoon who gave him the black eye an busted lip. He said my 'ACH fell off my locker.' I told him I wasn't gonna snitch but that was his story and he was sticking to it.
I’m about to do my meps, as long as I pass my meps it looks like I’m about to go through basic training. Only problem is I am extremely out of shape when it comes to running. I could barely run a lap.
Fights are going to happen. It's an extremely raw and stressful time of big changes, those first few weeks, and it doesn't take much to get on someone else's nerves. And at age 17-18, many guys' social problem-solving skills are still primitive, at best. I had my one good fight in Basic, and everyone broke us apart before the drill sergeants could figure out what had happened -- everyone knew that the whole platoon would pay dearly if the drill sergeants caught us, or if anyone showed up in lineup later with a black eye to explain! Now, I just look back at that green, young-and-dumb version of myself and just chuckle!
The term alpha male is used too loosely. I've met maybe a hand full of men I'd call alphas. Obviously, my opinion of myself is biased, so I'll leave myself out of it. An alpha male is generally not going to give enough fucks to fight with someone who disagrees with them, especially if they've been tasked with being a follower by a DS for that particular "mission". Alphas will build up others as much as possible and only assert themselves if needed. All in all, a young soldier who constantly questions authority, who can't be a follower, who gets offended/worked up by others easily, is not an alpha, he's a drama queen who needs approval. Before y'all pick that apart and talk about the hierarchy of wolves, just remember, we aren't dogs.
Hey Matt I am having this problem where my recruiter submitted my records 2 months ago and meps was yet to review them and he just told me that now he had to resubmit my records again today and idk what’s going on I’m afraid I’m never gonna get to finish the enlistment process...
I notice that you often repeat what you’re saying many times. The presentation would hit home more effectively if you organized your points and move forward more quickly.
Not necessarily true. Also if I cared about making every video 10 minutes then I would have easily made this one that length. It would have only been like 10 more seconds. Also, yes Traveler sometimes I may repeat myself on a few things, it happens. lol I don't claim to be the best speaker in the world.
I forget the guys name. But could you do a tribute to the actor who Sargent Hartman from Full Metal Jacket. Recently died and probably one of the most memorable movie soldiers in recent history.
Me and pvt Harris hated each other and the DS put us in combatives against one another. Maaaaaan why he do that? I scrubbed his ass up. DS told me that's enough.
At night things happen... One dude broke his hand trying to hit another guy. I dragged a dude out of his bed and beat him down. Beyond that our Platoon was pretty peaceful. Basic / AIT 1992.
The only way to solve an argument at basic is to engage in a 1v1 dual with revolvers and cowboy hats

Again thank you
Did he make it
DS: "Oh yall seems to have a lot of energy, alright I have a fix for that **clears throat* HALF RIGHT HUT"
Nice video and thanks for the info
Matt.. your flag has some wrinkles in it. I'm disappointed lmao
What is the Army's official position on resolving differences by the use of fists and "one potato-two potato"?
Most fights at Basic are guys going after DI's. The most fights happen during reception. Before you get shipped out.
Things to keep in mind
Well what about the pugil sticks or the comparatives?? Is it possible to take SOME of your frustrations out then?
Watching this all the way from the Netherlands💪🏾, 2,5 years school to go before im joining the army.
What about play fighting? Could you still get in trouble for that?
back in my day there were lots of fights and no punishment
Can you tell me some of the qualities of a good leader for boots? As an older guy applying for selection I suspect I'll probably get placed in a leadership role at some point, and I'm trying to prepare ahead of time so that I don't let the guys down.
What if you slap someone with your glove and challenge them to a dual? Asking for a myself. Thx.
I’m a pretty easy going guy and get along with everyone so I think I’ll be ok
From b 3/47 we didn't have problems like that. We followed the program if we got smoked, that is what it was, I came in 160 left 225 but we weren't f ups just liked the training.
Notifications squad!!!!
Marcos Rodriguez anal tearing for all soldier boys
Riverdale tales sorry bro I think you got me mixed up with you’re dad?
have you done a video on a career in the army? if not i’d love to see one
So you didn’t take the pads from you HCH and wrap them around you knuckles with a shirt and settle you beef in the kill zone????
Might be a dumb question. But do you get paid for basic training?
yes
Regardless of joining active duty or reserves, you get paid full active duty pay for the duration of basic
That’s true it happens in JROTC too Jaja some people they don’t like the leaders and things goes crazy 🤣
Matt!!! Make a platoon guide/leader tip informational video!!!
I did 2 back a longggg time ago. It may be time to revisit that since it's been about 1 year and at that time I had like 2k subscribers last May
Thanks for the vid. Especially helpful. Got a question: how does someone be a platoon leader/leadership position? Why do they get chosen? And how does someone stay humble?
Did OSUT at leonardwood. They would let us go to the tire pits and handle it in there. Basically jujitsu.
We used to just scrap in the bathroom before lights out lol 😂😂😂.
I’m about to do my meps, as long as I pass my meps it looks like I’m about to go through basic training. Only problem is I am extremely out of shape when it comes to running. I could barely run a lap.
NOPE! we got our chance with the pogo sticks!!
Winning a fight does not make you right in principle
It sure does make you feel like it though lol
@@justsomedude111 😂🤣
Finished it
When do they put privates in leadership positions at basic? Do they wait till white phase or just a week or two into basic training?
It will vary a bit but around week 2. That's when it was for us. By the beginning of white phase you should have leaders.
Matt Ward Okay thanks
Hey Matt I am having this problem where my recruiter submitted my records 2 months ago and meps was yet to review them and he just told me that now he had to resubmit my records again today and idk what’s going on I’m afraid I’m never gonna get to finish the enlistment process...
David Moffler youll eventually get there, i had the same issue. Bug your recruiter to keep calling and get things squared away
I notice that you often repeat what you’re saying many times. The presentation would hit home more effectively if you organized your points and move forward more quickly.
Traveler20091 yea but as a TH-camd you make more money off of 10 min videos
Not necessarily true. Also if I cared about making every video 10 minutes then I would have easily made this one that length. It would have only been like 10 more seconds. Also, yes Traveler sometimes I may repeat myself on a few things, it happens. lol I don't claim to be the best speaker in the world.
Actually repetition helps me with retention, so different strokes for different folks I guess.
Matt Ward repeating yourself also ensures the message is effectively delivered, I know you get tired of entitlement and audacious comments like this
Here Sir!
I forget the guys name. But could you do a tribute to the actor who Sargent Hartman from Full Metal Jacket. Recently died and probably one of the most memorable movie soldiers in recent history.
Tanner Wilson
R. Lee Ermey
He was also a Drill Instructor at one time.
JWALNATION wasn't that an honorary thing?
Mason Bourbonnais Im not sure. I just remember a few sources stating that. It may have been, however.
Mason Bourbonnais I just looked, and it states he was in fact a drill instructor. Thats why he did so well in the movie. He didnt even have to act
Well looks like my wrestling and jui jitsu and muy Thai back ground will be put for use 💪🏼 #MERICA
Can you avoid ore decline being the platoon leader . It sucks
No. But if you are the kind of person that doesn't want to lead then you will probably be fired promptly
2 MORE WEEKS!!! WOOWOOO
Duke it out while in combatants
jujitsu is crazyy
Me and pvt Harris hated each other and the DS put us in combatives against one another. Maaaaaan why he do that? I scrubbed his ass up. DS told me that's enough.
At night things happen... One dude broke his hand trying to hit another guy. I dragged a dude out of his bed and beat him down. Beyond that our Platoon was pretty peaceful. Basic / AIT 1992.
