Not fair to suggest not to buy a camera because of something you did to make it malfunction, I'm sure your camera would still be working if you hadn't messed with the lens. Hopefully, your video will support the reasons to buy it and not screw around with the things you shouldn't.
Avoid cleaning unless absolutely essential. Switch off stabilisation. Keep a lens cap on when not in use. I have mostly a ND filter on and in 2 years have done a very gentle clean only once.
Excellent demonstration of some of the cooler features of this camera. Does the control of another camera extend to anything other than the Sony FDR, e.g. GoPro or any other action camera with WiF andi live view?
Question, is it difficult pulling the footage off the cards? I thought I read somewhere it's difficult. I'm a Mac user and still use FCP. Thanks so much for posting this video!
I do not have a Mac, but my brother has a Macbook pro and we had no issues getting the videos on his computer from the SD card and editing them in final cut pro. I wouldn't take that as a final answer and do a little more research.
oh boy, you scared me. I just bought this camera then I saw this video thinking this camera was crap... then after reading the description, I started to laugh cause the camera didnt do anything wrong. you did.
Nice video and review but it would have been nicer to see your video in higher Quality but its only up in 360p.I tried out the Slow Motion on my FDR-AX53 of some moving Cars and thought the Quality was very poor unless i was doing something wrong.
I just uploaded it today. It might've been a processing issue with youtube, It is showing available in 1080p. Do you remember what your shutter speed was set at? I turned mine up as high as possible because of blurring but haven't had any quality issues shooting in 120 fps.
I think i had Shutter speed at Auto and i mostly shoot in 4K i must try shooting in 1080P again to see the results i usually use 100FPS i have the UK Model here.
When doing slowmotion clips...can you edit the clip in the camera menu between regular speed and slow motion or use a editing program on the computer to do that?
Hey you get a great image there when you throw the stick, is that post processed or original and what kind of settings do you use. My problem with this camera is that it looks a bit colder and sharp in a bit of an unnatural way to let's say Canons G25, G30, G40 and also most panasonic models. I really want to buy the best camera and I am leaning towards this but I want a more film like look and if it's too crispy, to cold blue kind of image it's hard to break that illusion of amateur recording. But when you throw that stick it do look like you manage to make it look very cinema like so what's the secret or is it just when the evening kicks in that the camera give out warmer colors in general? Thanks for this review, informative and to the point.
I have noticed this camera does a fantastic job in the golden hours of photography just before sunset and after sunrise. I normally adjust color curves to get the look I'm after but didn't for that shot. There is a cinematone effect that helps make the image warmer. I wish I had a canon g40 to do a side by side comparison but decided on the AX53 because of the 120 FPS and time lapse feature.
Good clear review. I already have the Canon Legria/Vixia HF G30 which is very good and easy to use. I also have the Sony AS50 action cam like you. I have been looking at the Sony AX53 vs the Panasonic VXF990-they are both 4k & have very similar features at a similar price point. I like the idea of multi cam, night shooting mode, slow-motion, a manual ring, timelapse etc. I assume the AX53 does not have built-in ND filters as an option (but I believe it has a filter thread though) is that correct? Overall, would you recommend the Sony for wildlife/nature footage?
I didn't know you could control a second camera. I have watched a lot of AX53 videos, your the first to mention this feature. Can you position the second video anywhere on the screen.
That is going to depend on your video editing software. I use Sony Vegas Movie Studio 11 which is an older editing program but with that for the most part you can move it around freely.
To all: “Cleaning” the lens on any decent camera is a bad idea. Doing it to this floating lens is a very bad idea. Much better to buy a UV is polarizing filter, and always keep it on. There will be no need to clean the lens
Peter Angelino z You are so right. Did the same to mine. When I was at the beach with all the sea spray on the UV filter was easy to clean and to not touch the actual lens at all. See my videos using same camera (Mark Gwinnell - Benidorm 4K) All handheld - Fantastic camera. I also hv AX100 but with no BOSS on it I just take the AX53 with me all the time !
Great video, thanks :) I ordered one a couple of days ago... I was also trying to decide between this camera and the Canon G40... The footage I've seen of the AX53 just looked a lot better to be honest. Cheers.
Thanks, good video. I would like to know if when connected by wireless to an action cam and you are recording, can you switch between full screen on one camera or the other, or is the action cam ALWAYS shown as a picture in picture?
Mike Hall the two cameras record independently of each other. I added the picture in picture in post with my video editing software. Thanks for eatching
@@SufferingOutdoors Many thanks. Just one other question - is it possible to connect a smartphone via wireless and use it as a viewfinder only, while using the camera controls to zoom, record etc? @@mikehall2652 You can connect to a smart phone. I downloaded the app and tried it but was disappointed. I think the only thing you can do is control record.

Interested in the purchase of this camera for long range hunting video capture... 1000 yds plus. Once one pass the 20x optical zoom, how well will the image reproduce say at 26-30x digital zoom. I usually have my rifle scope set around 26-28x for shots beyond 1000 yds. Also hoping the slow motion feature would be a great for the impact footage.
Likely will be better quality in 4k, but you can't shoot 120 FPS (really slow mo) in 4K. For what your looking for you may need to make some sacrifices or look for a 30x optical zoom camera if available. I usually disable the digital zoom as the quality gets distorted pretty quickly and most viewers would rather see a further away image then a close distorted one.
I hope you can. answer these questions. I started using the Ax53 about 1 week ago. I have a very steady hand and a good eye. I am just getting used to this camera. During playback, looking through the camera's LCD monitor, the video quality looked excellent. But, when I downloaded the video through Sony's Play Memories onto my computer, the quality did not look as good, and not that much better than my old Canon 230.00 Dec. 2015 HD camera. Really. I was surprised. I am watching the video on my computer, a Jan,. 2015 Dell top of line XPS 15. It is Quad HD, not 4k. Does Play Memories degrade the video quality? Can I download the video directly onto my computer from the 64 gb Sony card by just popping in the video card into the video card slot without Play Memories? Is it important to "Format" the Sony memory card first before I film, cause I never did that. Thank you. I dont want to return the camera, but I was hoping for that blazingly clear video image that I would expect from a camera of this nature. THank you for your answers in advance. Best,
What resolution are you shooting in? Did you try playing your footage with a standard media player like Windows Media player to see if it looks better. I have not used Play Memories but generally video editing software will lower the quality of the video for performance sake The camera's quality is great, if it doesn't look good you are either not shooting in full HD, if you are try 4k. If the camera won't let you select these options then you do not have a fast enough memory card. Formatting the card won't do anything.
How exactly do you change the frame rate? I tried to change it in the image quality menu, but it only gave me the option of 25 fps and the 100/ 50mbps. There is a slow motion option but the slow motion option does not record in HD. where is the option to change the frame rate please?
In the shooting mode options where you can pick video, photo, time lapse etc. you select the high speed rec. My camera has a picture of a basketball hoop.
Hello Suffering Outdoors, another question. Do we need an internet connection so that we can connect the action camera to the ax53 or we just have to turn on the wifi?
samoyeds1977 there is wireless control through Sony’s play memories but the function is pretty limited to recording and zooming in and out. You can’t turn camera on and off.
There is no setting to control the speed of the zoom but as you zoom in it is sensitive to how far you push the zoom button. It can zoom in pretty slow but not real fast. If you push the zoom button it goes pretty fast at first then slows down as it zooms in more.
I just purchased this camcorder and was trying it out but I am having issues watching it on my computer. I made the video in AV4kxavc s mode. The video plays fine from the camera view, but when I downloaded it to my computer, using playmemories, the video is like in slow motion, and you can't hear the people talking. Do you have any suggestions?
great vid man!! im having problems recording slow mo it says cannot record please use UHS U3 compatible memory card or change REC mode settings the memory card that i using is 64gb sandisk ultra 48 mb/s any tips thx
Make sure the file format under the menu options-image quality/size is set to HD XAVC S HD. Then under the recording modes select high speed record. It should select this option ok. I'm not sure if the high speed record works in 4k or regular HD.
Can you manual focus when using Time Lapse as i tried Time Lapse yesterday through my bedroom window but it was out of focus and also picked up the marks on the window.
I would like to make a time lapse video recording 76 hours of a 3D printing process, is there any intervalometer that I can connect to this camera do to a time lapse? Or will I have to buy a huge micro SD card?
Time lapse is a mode within the camera, all you need is a standard SD card. But this camera has limits to the amount of pictures you can take. I've done 5 hour time lapse but any longer you will have to set a timer and manually start a new time lapse
Oh sorry, now I noticed you have the AX53. I have the AX33, which doesn't have time lapse function in its software. Thanks for replying my comment! You have a nice channel!
If I use the multi camera control, does it record on different file or it's already mixed. And if it is already mixed, does switching that view of that two camera will both have a full screen view or main camera has 3/4 of a screen and the secondary camera is 1/4 of a screen? Other question is, if you switch to manual mode, if I choose the shutter speed, does the other control like aperture or exposure will automatically turn into automatic mode or it will remain on the value that you already set?
The multi camera control only acts like a remote, it will record independently on both cameras. You will then have to edit it. Manual mode only allows you to have one item set to manual such as shutter speed or aperture.
Alright. That's good to know because that's what we want... I thought it is like the Panasonic camcorder that has a twin camera and we don't like the output because the secondary camera is embedded at the top portion of the video with the main camera. Thank you so much Suffering Outdoors. God bless you.
I git my Sony FDR AX-53 camera to film at Air shows but when I aim the camera at a jet or slow flying aircraft it takes ages to focus on auto and by the time it has focused the Jet has gone, have you got any tips for airshows.
Hi Rod. The AX53 like many vid cameras doesnt love focusing quickly on aircraft from a tighter zoom so you have to start from a wider zoom first (and keeping aircraft centred) Other option is to go manual focus and set on infinity but I find that reduces other options to use like shutter speed as you only have one choice for the adjustment ring. Other vid cameras have focus settings like instant or slow etc but this Sony doesnt. Regardless I reckon the AX53 is the best camera for recording handheld dynamic air displays .
This camera is crap if you want to use it as a manual camera.sony have even told me that. In its advertising it says, total customisation with ergonomic manual controls. Not true. If you set the shutter speed and then set the iris, it will put the shutter speed back to auto and vise versa. Sony have told me that if I wanted a manual camera, i should have purchased a professional camera. But in their advertising for the AX53 it says that there is Total customisation with ergonomic manual controls.
Yeah, I found out the same thing when I tried to control the camera manually. I was also misled by Sony's advertising. Good auto shoot camera, but not durable.
I can understand why you are suffering outdoors after what you did to your camcorder. There is no reason to clean your lens whatsoever and if it does need cleaning take it to a professional. If you take your Sony FDR-AX53 to a place that is dusty or exposed to things that may dirty your lens, why don't you try putting a filter to protect it? Totally unacceptable to tell others not to buy a camcorder that is as good as the Sony FDR-AX53 because of what you did. I have one and it is a superb camcorder for under $1,000.
HI I BOUGHT THE AX 33 AND WAS NOT HAPPY. I RETURNED IT. WHY YOU ASK .
Hola saludos desde Perú no te entiendo lo que hablas pero con los ejemplos me vasto. Jajaja

How do set the camera to record Normal speed to slow motion then back to normal like you did? Thanks
stick85251 that was done with editing software. You record all in 120fps and slow down the portion you want slow mo then allow the other portion to play in normal soeed
