5. Awit sa Birhen ng Antipolo (Birheng Maria ng Antipolo)
The image was brought to the country by governor-general Juan Niño de Tabora from Mexico via the galleon El Almirante in 1626. His safe voyage across the Pacific Ocean was attributed to the image, which was given the title of "Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage". It was substantiated later by six other successful voyages of the Manila-Acapulco Galleons with the image aboard as its patroness.
The statue is one of the most celebrated Marian images in the Philippines, having been mentioned by national martyr José Rizal in his writings. From May to July each year, the image attracts millions of pilgrims from all over the country and abroad.
Many songs were composed for the Lady under the said title. But this hymn is the most famous and is considered nowadays as the official hymn. The music is composed by Rev. Fr. Eduardo Hontiveros, SJ (known as Fr. Honti - the Father of Philippine Liturgical Music) with lyrics written by Rev. Fr. Victor de Jesus, SJ.
This orchestration by yours truly is used and played during the Viajeng Joroan visit of the Birhen ng Antipolo (August 17-27, 2023) to the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Our Lady of Salvation at Joroan, Tiwi, Albay for the latter's Diocesan Fiesta. Once again, it was used for the visit of the image to Tabaco National High School last October 20, 2023.
