    The fact that Horus went to kneel to a human who shit himself just facing him says so much about who he was. Not even Sanguinius, maybe only Vulkan would have done that. His gift was charisma and empathy. Horus was staggeringly arrogant and corruptible. But he tried listening to *everyone* to the point of making Curze, Angron, Fulgrim, Dorn all feel valued *at the same time* and he was even willing to hear out the Interex. He considered rethinking the Great Crusade and including Xenos; who the hell else would do that?
    It's obvious he should have been leader because he pulled that off. No one instinctively shunned him. The tragedy is that like the Lodges, the willingness to listen turned him inside out and stole his future.

      Strangely enough, one primarch that came pretty close to what you've described Horus doing is Fulgrim of all people, mentioned in Rho's video, "The True Strength of Fulgrim". Here's the excerpt from The Palatine Phoenix:
      'The primarch sank to one knee and reached down to help Telmar's victim to his feet. The man stared at him with mingled fright and awe, his mouth working soundlessly. Fulgrim smiled and stood.'
      I know he gets a bad rap, but before he picked up the Laer Blade, the big purple boi was actually a pretty decent guy.

      @Vae Victis I just got into the lore a few months ago and reading this just left me stunned. I never imagined from all I heard of Fulgrim that he would ever do something like that. Him and Angron have to be the most tragic of the primarchs to me.

    Considering how long the Horus Heresy turned out to be I think it's really sad that we don't get more of Horus before he turned to Chaos. Also in the scene with Sanginius I seem to remember them both considering the ruthless aspect of the Emperor. Horus imploring him to ask Father for help and Sanginius implying that the Emperor has bigger things to worry about / might wipe them out for being mutants.

    My favourite of the big man's gentler and nice moments, has to be after Horus has had a very harsh argument with Abbadon on the Interex. He has this wonderful exchange with Little Horus and Loken.
    "Counsel me, then. You were both entirely too silent during the debate."
    "Ezekyle had... a point..." He stiffened as he saw the Warmaster raise his eyebrows.
    "Go on little one."
    "We... that is to say... we prosecute this crusade according to certain doctrines. For two centuries, we have done so. They were given to us, to uphold, by the Empeor himself. "
    "Beloved by all." Horus chipped in.
    "The Emperor's doctrines have guided us since the start."
    "What about you Garviel?"
    "I know why we ought to make war upon the Interex sir." He said. "What interests me is why you think we shouldn't."
    Horus smiled. "At last, a thinking man."
    Horus is absolutely precious in these moments.

      He was not the most powerful, not the best tactical leader, not the best logistics expert. However he was the best diplomat and he was high up in the other categories with only the Lion being better at tactics and Guilliman better at Logistics. He was just a great general and better all around then any of his brothers which is why he was chosen for Warmaster.

    I think another thing about OG Horus is that he was both curious an niave. He never wanted to see the bad in anyone. And when he was corrupted by chaos, he felt betrayed by everyone who he had ever given a benefit of the doubt.

    • @MLaak86
      @MLaak86 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Perhaps not naïve, just optimistic and hopeful for the Imperium, the Primarchs and all the Astrates. Arguably nowhere near as ground down as some of his brothers and the Emperor into having a more cynical outlook about how they'd have to proceed. Sorta best shown with how he was open to the idea, with the first meeting of the Interex, that humans and xenos could indeed coexist along with more advanced tech when if *anyone* else had been in charge they'd have burnt the Interex without a second thought.

    I feel people who don’t believe Horus in the moments like the one he shared with Sanguinius, have a hard time seeing that Lupercal and traitor Horus are really two different beings. The latter being the darker aspects of Horus brought to reality and then amplified. While Horus Lupercal is a genuinely decent individual, not without flaws but flaws don’t make you a bad individual. He loved his brothers and the moments he shares with them are genuine. I don’t think you can actually argue that he didn’t love Sanguinius and do it honestly. To discredit how corrupted he became by Chaos is to completely undermine the story of the Heresy itself. Horus’ fall is so tragic because he was such a compassionate and caring brother. There are very few brothers (I can’t think of any) who just outright didn’t like him. Sure some disagreed with him being named War Master like the Kahn but even he didn’t dislike Horus, just didn’t like the decision.

    I just remember when my buddy introduced me to 40k with eisenhorn, then after finishing those he told me to read the Horus Heresy. Besides knowing that Horus would fall from random bits of lore, I had no idea what was going to happen, and it was shocking to see this honorable man and be told he would become evil incarnate. It was heart wrenching seeing him nearly die, and then the final choice where he chooses chaos over the warnings of Magnus (which was a curve ball for me, I had no idea why a red cyclops with red hair had appeared).

    • @Furzkampfbomber
      @Furzkampfbomber 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can see why you felt that way, considering you started right with the Heresy.
      And about Magnus, well, if you read further into the Heresy series, you might feel that he is the protagonist of next tragedy. In a way, Magnus is even more tragic, if you ask me, since he actually never did anything in order to harm the Emperor, the Crusade or his brothers, but was a victim of the ignorance, arrogance and fanatism of the Emperor and at least one of his brothers and of a fallen Horus scheming against him.

    • @chrisfry6054
      @chrisfry6054 ปีที่แล้ว

      I too started with eisenhorn and went directly into the heresy. Although at that time only the first 3 heresy books were out. I agree that magnus is the most tragic. And if anything resembles the deals the emperor made with the GODS for the primarch creation. All magnus wanted was to save his sons. However, Magnus can be seen as the greatest success and failure at the same time. Such a powerhouse but ultimately his ego destroys any fruitful plans for redemption. Horus to me was always set up to fail. Not necessarily by the emperor but by the gods themselves.

    Remember Rho, It was G man’s idea that none of the primarchs remember their lost brothers. This was before Ulanor. When Horus walked into that room and had his argument with Malcador, he knew the names of at least one of the lost brothers. My point is if the memory wipe occurred then it was before Horus became Warmaster. The conversation that occurs on the eve of Horus becoming warmaster, he may not even remember that confrontation with Malcador.

  • @MLaak86

    I feel like Horus was perhaps the closest to a complete copy of the Emperor out of all the Primarchs, having his genius (tactical and strategical), charisma and other interpersonal skills, combat prowess, and above all (perhaps) his wrath and hubris - and since he lacked Big E's millennia of life experiences and crucial knowledge of the nature of the Warp to temper him effectively his fall was inevitable (about the only other Primarch more likely to fall was Lorgar given the need to worship he had or that became engrained within him).

    I always viewed it as the OG Horus sort of died when he was felled by the tainted blade or his good part of the soul was locked away somewhere , (similar abit to what happened to fulgrim for abit. ... and what was healed from the lodges was not really Horus as such but a heavily messed up/ possessed/tainted version of him more less wearing his body or puppeteering it ... think like argal on steroids :)
    Can we just have ordo chronos just pop back in time and pull Horus from the past into the now :) or just ask big daddy Trayzn for some reality / universe breaking shattering nonsense to bring things back and forth :) ..

    • @MLaak86
      @MLaak86 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is something of an open question for sure about how much he was in control of himself after that point; was his mind simply infiltrated and his viewpoint wildly skewed, part of his personality destroyed or changed or was he effectively at least partially possessed?
      The Fight on the Vengeful Spirit has previously at least had The Emperor being unsure how much of Horus' strength he's actually fighting vs the power of the Ruinous Powers themselves. He also seems to change significantly in terms of his personality and behaviour, while still being smooth-tongued and such he starts using fear more than charm to get his way as well as rarely going into battle.
      Then again we've had moments were he regrets feeling what he's doing is necessary, regrets not having the brothers he loves most at his side vs the "broken monsters" and does seem to want to spare those brothers who haven't come to his side.

      Its actually hinted by vulkan to be the case . In his fight with magnus in the webway, vulkan even stated that all the traitors had lost all control when they allowed the chaos gods to touch their souls .
      "Even the lupercal, who has been hallowed out to serve as a hive for the pantheon, deep down in his soul at least what's left of it knows he has lost control . I always saw that night between Horus and Sanguinias, as A. Horus' first crack in his veneer of Imperial gold. Both because there was a terrible flaw that his brothers' sons are afflicted by, on the Emperor's own crafting. But, also because when he stopped to pause and consider whether he would keep it a secret from the Emperor. He agreed, because he likely knew there was zero chance the Emperor didn't know about the flaw already. And B. He absolutely could have agreed to keep the secret for the sole purpose of using it against Sangi-baby later. He was a VERY tactical primarch, after all. Some would say, self-enrichment for an advantage, especially when it costs him nothing to have it. Just sayin'

    • @similaritiesendhere
      @similaritiesendhere 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's quite a tangled web. The Emperor's ability to see the future, read minds, sense deception/corruption is portrayed very inconsistently.
      For example, if Horus knew that Big E was fully aware of the gene flaw in the Blood Angels, how the hell did Big E not know that he created an entire legion predisposed to chaos sorcery (Thousand Sons) when banned space marines from using psychic abilities.
      That's not a gene flaw. That's an intentional gene feature. The Thousand Sons should've been the original Grey Knights.......... unless everything that's happened has always been part of Big E's plan.
      Think of it this way. If Horus was a master tactician, that ability is a weaker version of Big E's tactical skills. Big E was a better tactician... who could also see the future.

      @@licensed_beheader That's optimistic and probably true but, let's not act like we know for sure that Big E is definitely a good guy.
      It's entirely possible that some of the chaos gods started off as a powerful, mortal psykers. Look at the Cabal's plot to defeat chaos (destroying humanity). That wouldn't actually defeat chaos. It would prevent Big E from becoming another chaos god though.
      I'm expecting the next major plot twist to be even bigger than the Horus Heresy and that's about as big as it can get.

    I’m going way out here but what if Horus isn’t the one to kill sanguines. What if sanguines facing horus breaks chaos hold and forces horus to finally repent. Could happen Russ almost got horus to rethink everything but in the end said it was to late for him but i feel sanguines was a closer brother. And this rages the emperor and he actually kills sanguines cause horus to rage enough to almost kill the emperor.

    I feel like the real mystery is, who at games workshop has a fetish for bald men and anime boys. Everyone that's described as beautiful either ends up being bald or blonde

    I think it's kind of fitting that the moment in Fear to Tread is now retroactively colored by his eventual downfall and exploitation of that information.

    We know that the emperor is on the golden throne making warp travel possible but how did he do it during the great crusade?

    Horus wasn't a traitor.
    He was already dying, when he was stabbed by the demon blade Anathame.
    He died on the moon of Davin
    The Horus after, was just a body possessed by the demonic ruinous powers.

    I have a theory, that is based on another theory. If the Warp Gods that were the Traitor Primarch's souls have fled their bodies when they have become Daemon Princes, then what if the Warp God that was the soul of Horus, has also left him? When he fought with the Emperor, he was basically a mindless puppet of Chaos. Not much different than his Brothers after their ascension. When Ferris died, his body was glowing as his soul (Minor Warp God) left his body. This didn't happen to Horus, because he didn't have a soul at this point, just Chaos energy.

    I'll never forget Horus manipulating Mornival to place himself in better position. Before all corruption and all ideas of superiority to normal humans, he does effectively lie and scheme. Being benevolent to his brothers and attentive to those who catch his interest, Horus takes to politics as fast as to the warfare.

    Horus was not the best Warrior, Strategist, Logistical expert. But he was the best diplomat and he was high on the strategic and logistical parts as well making him the best pick for Warmaster. However after he was stabbed he was not Horus anymore. Sanguinius and Russ are better fighters by far, the Lion a better Strategic mind, Guilliman better at logistics. However Horus was not far behind them thus making him great as the glue to hold his brother together.

    Uh, the Corpse Emperor - the witch that should actually have his name synonymous with betrayal - is not going to talk down to Horus as being a mere bioweapon in his sight, well actually talking to him. You're so desperate to defend daddy emperor, you're making statements that make absolutely no sense.
