Don Nagle was the best fighter I ever witnessed. His skill and bravery were off the charts. Whenever I hear Isshin Ryu Karate criticized, I remember Sensei Nagle. He died still a young man at age 61, sadly.
Great video. Surprised not to hear Sensei Don Nagle 10th Don not mentioned, considering he Won the Okinawan 1956 Karate Championship under Shimabuku AND was a Narcotics Police Officer in Jersey City who used this system and has absolutely proven it's effectiveness in battle. I am a former student of Master Don Nagle. Shimabuku's son came to our class and it was a very big deal. Great memories. The school is still right there in Jersey City under 8th Don Sensei Dennis Hoare. You will get True Isshinryu there to this day.
Just joined a dojo that teaches Isshin Ryo Karate. Thank you for posting this video! It really gave me an insight into this particular style of Martial Arts! :D
I feel lucky to have had an opportunity to spend two days learning from a first generation student. I learned simple body mechanics that made techniques more effective.
Awesome job on your video :) My Father Master Clarence Ewing is in your group picture. Plus I just posted a rare video of him on youtube that you might be interested in seeing.
To be very honest without any intention to offend anyone, Isshin-Ryu Karate is an eclectic and hybrid form of Karate that derives from the traditional Arts such as Shorin-Ryu, Goju-Ryu and Kobudo. The fact is that Isshin-Ryu Karate is [or could be] one of the first early Systems of martial science that combined other Arts. Just like everything in life, all Venues of human activity advance from their original State and Martial Arts aren't excluded either and it'll be foolish for us to believe otherwise. My teacher Robert Edwards, 8th Dan has been [still is] accused of changing the Forms of Isshin-Ryu from the original Format. Meaning he has violated the Art so much that Isshin-Ryu is no longer Isshin-Ryu anymore and I believe that kind of accusation is very absurd and very disgusting to suggest such vulgarity.
I'm not offended although courtesy, is one of the most important elements of Karatedo. Agree or not, Isshin-ryu is Shimabuku's style, if we put our own stuff in it does change the system. If we painted a mustache on the Mona Lisa it would no longer be an original portrait of Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, but a modified version. Some people, such as myself, are into preservation. If your teacher has changed the kata, so what? Just have the courtesy to say it's not the way Shimabuku Sensei taught it.
People DO say it, but they're too goddamned unmanly to do it facing him plus they have the testicular Fortitude to say it to the lower Belts. I usually challenge the high ranking Instructors and Students alike to stand up and deal with this on the Floor like Warriors but they back down. While I have the Opportunity to state some things here, Donald Wasielewski, 8th Dan of Isshin-Ryu Karate and he comes from Grandmaster Steve Armstrong's lineage has stated there words when it comes to learning Isshin-Ryu from various Sensei:"Celebrate the Differences." There are a lot of injustices and wrongs within the association of Isshin-Ryu practitioners and instructors alike [You can add Proponents and Exponents of other Martial Arts, too]. Here are some Examples: Playing Favorites Politics Good Ol' Boys' Network Racism Sexism, etc. I usually state that there are other Folks who are Grandmasters do things differently in their Forms compare to Others, but nonetheless, it's not deficient if the Method[s] do actually work.
First, if you want me to exchange with you, and not immediately delete your posts, please refrain from the vulgarities. I have children who visit this channel. Thanks. Second, who cares what other people say? 95% of First Generation students altered the system. Third, if your teacher has changed the kata and doesn't teach what Master Shimabuku taught as Isshin-ryu then it becomes a Ryu-ha or "substyle." That is fact. Nothing wrong with that but I do feel it should be labled as such. Everyone can "celebrate the differences" but I want to preserve what Master Shimabuku taught my teacher, Arcenio Advincula and what he has taught to me. To each there own but I want to know what was originally taught. Last, from what I've been taught, Okinawan Karatedo has never been about fighting and proving it on the floor. This is a USA thing. Karatedo does not teach us how to beat someone, but learning how not to be beaten. This is why the Okinawans teach to only use force as a very last resort and with the least amount of force necessary. "Ikken Hiasatsu" is an Okinawan Karatedo meaning 1punch-certain kill. If Karatemen settle things on the floor, someone will certainly go the hospital and possibly the morgue. If "it's ok if it works on the floor" then I decide to bring a knife. You will then bring a pistol and I will go get a shotgun. You go for the 50cal and I jump for the grenades. I hope you see my point. A student asked Master Shimabuku if he thought he (the student) could fight. Shimabuku Sensei told him to get a gun. You see, violence only leads to more violence and the beauty of Okinawan Karatedo is it teaches us how not to fight by teaching us to fight.
MarylandIsshinkai First, what I've meant by "Get on the Floor and handle things like Warriors" is for Folks to stop with the back talking and bad mouthing and show themselves and each other to show their Skills in application, techniques that are useful, fighting capabilities and so on. It's not about VIOLENCE [unless if they want to really fight], it's all about exchanging Skills. There were many Masters who did that type of Method and none of them got killed [Well, some of them did], but got bruised up really bad but never got killed. Therefore, it's not a USA thing at all because those who are Warriors all over the world follow this Method to be sharp, ready, alert and prepared. Sir, let's not go there with that. Second, Isshin-Ryu Karate is going to be [or already is] 60 Years old in existence and it's fairly an established Style as well. One of the Isshin-Ryu instructors has asked me after Grandmaster Steve Armstrong passed on if Isshin-Ryu Karate is going to evolve by some of its Proponents getting into other Arts. I told her yes because she can look into Soke Shimabuku has mastered three Arts, altered the Stances, Punches, Blocks, Forms and he created Sunsu kata; an unique Form that combines all of the seven Katas from Seisan to Sanchin and there are no other systems of Karate have this Form. If we could be truthful, real, straightforward and honest, Isshin-Ryu is an ecclectic, synthesized style of Karate from a Genius like Soke Shimabuku and he's ahead of his time. Furthermore, if some of those Martial Artists in Isshin-Ryu are exactly truly Puritans as they claim to be, they have to realize that this form of Karate has been "altered" from the Beginning and there's no denying of this Fact. Then they must make a Decision to follow through and here are the two Conclusions: 1. Realize that Isshin-Ryu has came from traditional Systems and it became a "Frankenstein" form of Karate and forever stop with the useless Arguments of Isshin-Ryu Karate is pure and others who don't follow this Standard are truly Deviants and so forth. For me, I love this "Frankenstein" [Isshin-Ryu Karate, that is] and I'm going to be with it to the very end. 2. They get all of their Isshin-Ryu Certificates, Belts [Novice, Master, Sensei, Grandamster, etc.] and anything else that's Isshin-Ryu related must turn in all of their Things and relinquish their ties with the Art. Then find a pure Style of Martial Arts and start from scratch. I know that's cold but a Stand must be taken and I'm doing it! Third, I only use Violence if I'm assaulted first and Violence is proper to resort against the Aggressor[s] when the Innocent has been attacked. Malcolm X has stated: "Be courteous, obey the Law and behave accordingly. But when somebody puts their Hands on you, send them to the Morgue." We need to be honest with ourselves and each other that Violence isn't going anywhere soon so it'll be proper to use it in Self Defense only.
MarylandIsshinkai Dude Sensei has made his own kata too and changed some of the old ones. Yes, he will still teach the original, but i don't know specifically in what matter he passes that along. Please get Sensei Advincula here in baltimore for a seminar. He's getting up in age now. I need an advance notice so i can afford the fee. don't plan on doing much besides listening. i just wanted to see him again . take the picture with him that he told me to take years ago in oceanside. man did i regret that. i speak with him now and again on facebook. Sensei is still the man, not many like him left, and frankly there haven't been many like him period ! domo arigato & namaste
Interesting. I love how the supernatural is still present in the story. That is what gave these "original masters" their "cred" not some organization but their own Dream and skills. Suggestion though is do away with the background music, it's so 90s, especially using "oriental" sounds
What your video is basicly saying tatsu invented a style based on a demon coming to him in a vision and he's even called dragon man which Satan is the dragon.so karate is demonic.thanks for informing me.
that is one of the more far fetched , and ludicrous things i have heard associated any martial art, and saying it is demonic. you must have been misinformed long ago, to come to such a dumb ass conclusion. shame on your sheeple ass smdh.
If you understood the signifigance of the dragon in Okinawa, how is not the same as the english style dragon of old England.. nor is it associated with satan.. maybe if you bothered to get a bit of background on the history and culture of the country.. it might make sense... of course that would rely on you to THINK
I read this again…. first he was not visited by a demon , 'Second you really need to find out what the dragon represents in Asian cultures, then find out why he got the "nick name". Third your conclusion is flawed. and fourth, I strongly suggest that anyone who has the name you do that refers to destroying batman. ( this also tells me your a gamer nerd) is most likely not christian or is a sudo Christian . After all if you believe in Satan you must believe in God.. Dont think I want to hang around your church. .

Master Angi Uezu has done this great art proud
Great video. Agreed. Also should be mentioned is Harold Long, Allen Wheller, Mitchum and the others

Nice job putting this historical video of Isshin Ryo karate together so that others can better understand and continue with the Master's dream.
This is the karate I study. So much to remember!!!!!¡
Video is on my playlist. Agena Dojo c.1958. Thanks for watching.
Great Video and Thanks for posting.
I watched them. Very impressive. Thanks for posting.
I studied under Master Long 30 years ago. I really miss and wish I had never stopped.
I did too, '88-'91.
Very well done !
I think it is still out there. I believe that is one of the earliest films of Shimabuku performing Seisan kata.
thank you master Shimabuku for your wisdom I will use it well as I have chosen your style of martial arts and with that I said to you OOSS sensai
How long did Shimabuku train with Miyagi?
Isshin-ryu in this country started to fade I believe after the passing of Harold Long who was a champion of the style here in the states.

Kimberly Ewing 😍😍😍😍😍
I knew your father well. A great man,
Why did you use the word "atrocities"?
My great grandpa was blown up on that island in 1945 @ kakazu ridge
It was a serious atrocity. My deepest sympathy for your loss.

This sounds cool, but I hear Isshin Ryu style is fading.
Actually I hear recently it i one of the most practiced in north america. There are several organizatons so they are not all under one " lineage".
