    Interestingly, only two other airports in the US allowed for non-travellers to go through TSA post-9/11 and pre-pandemic. Aside from Pittsburgh, Detroit airport was the other one of them, and I think Tampa was the third.
    I used to live in Aliquippa in the late ‘90s so I still remember back in the day when Pittsburgh was the largest hub for then UsAir/US Airways, had regional flights from the landside terminal, & felt super similar to Atlanta’s airport.

    • @MilesByFoot
      @MilesByFoot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't remember Detroit being one, but I do know Tampa had/has a program that allowed you to visit one terminal, and I believe you needed to sign up for it at least a day in advance. That being said, though, I think programs like this aren't very well advertised, so there could be others!

    At 4:53 you mention that American Airlines acquired US Airways. It was actually America West, based in Arizona. America West kept the name US Airways, and in 2013 AMR corp (American) was bought out by US Airways. The AA name was kept by US Airways.

    • @MilesByFoot
      @MilesByFoot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right! I found additional research that corroborated your comment; AA was the one filing for bankruptcy protection, and so the combined US Airways/American West indeed acquired AA. Great catch!

    • @MilesByFoot
      @MilesByFoot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Penguins fan I didn't find it oppressively expensive, as it can be near airports for those last-minute dropoffs. It's probably a dime or two a gallon more than elsewhere in the city, but not enough to go out of your way for.

      @@MilesByFoot you won’t from 79 but I do recommend going down 376 east into the city if you ever have the time. Coming through the fort pitt tunnel into the city is an experience the first time you do it. Just don’t get to distracted by the city just appearing in front of you, you have all of 30 seconds to figure out which of four lanes you need to be in and get there.

    Great video. You presented the airport in a very flattering yet accurate way. Your video shows that in terms of aesthetics the only solution currently needed at this airport is the removal of that ugly earth-tone tile, cheap drop ceilings and graphite-colored signage. Otherwise, the facility looks great.

    Us Airways dropped Pittsburgh as a hub long before they got merged into American. American and US Airways did not merge until 2015.

    • @MilesByFoot
      @MilesByFoot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To avoid bogging down the video too much with corporate merger details, I simplified a bit. US Airways merged with American Airlines in 2015, but had effectively been acquired ten years earlier when American West Airlines merged with US Airways. US Airways downgraded PIT's status as a hub in 2004, the year before their reverse merger with AWA.
