You should practice making fire with your pocketknife. I'll be using 2 of my favorites today, the Stanley 10-049 and my Victorinox Fieldmaster, Swiss Army Knife. The Stanley has a little 1 1/2" long stainless steel blade that locks in place and is my EDC pocketknife. I made a large pile of Tulip Poplar shavings then used the spine to ferro rod ignite them. I fueled the fire with foot stomped pieces of Tulip Poplar. The SAK is a favorite of mine that I still love to get out and practice processing fatwood with. Today it's saw made wafers, sawdust, scrapings, and spine scraped the ferro rod while the large blade whittled up a pile of shavings. It was very easy to ferro rod ignite the scrapings, add the other processed fatwood, and fuel the fire with 3 Pine Cones. There is a company that makes a firesteel that fits in the slot where the tooth pick goes on the Swiss Army Knife. It works great, I use the back of the saw to strike it. This allows you to always have a firesteel with your swiss army knife. The product is called “Firefly” by a company named Tortoise
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl your welcome. They sell an 8 pack of two different sizes on Amazon. Pretty pricy tho. If you go the the Tortoise gear website they have 3 packs of the correct size for the field master for about $16.50. The longer ones are the correct size. I thoroughly enjoy your channel.
I purposely bought the SAK Huntsman because of the saw. I love it. Started quite a few fires with it. Either ferro rod or using it to make a bow drill set. Keep the videos coming. I enjoy them all.
I always carry a Victorinox Classic SD, and quickly sharpened one spine into a very effective ferro rod striker. I sharpened the edge which sits in the body of the knife, so it’s locked when used as a striker. It took less than five minutes on a small sharpening stone. Just sharing an additional option to Dave’s excellent video.
I love my swiss army huntsman I keep 2 sewing needles and thread in it. 1 needle with thread wrapped around under the saw and 1 needle in the needle holder under the corkscrew.
I wish I still drove for Swift, next time I came to the Greenville terminal, I'd stop by to get a fire making lesson and buy you lunch! I'm told some of the best food in the country is in SC. I sure appreciate your videos I'm learning so much. Thank you!
Thanks Floyd. I drove for CanAm just long enough to realize I didn't want to drive coast to coast. Actually went into a 26' box truck doing delivery and warehouse work.
Love your channel Dave!!!! I have the Victorinox Huntsman and keep the Fire ant firesteel and tinder in the corkscrew, thus always having a means of fire with just the knife. 👍🏼👍🏼
I think I saw that video one time. I actually started drinking a little wine for the stomach in the last few years. I now need a corkscrew instead of that Phillips screwdriver.
I was thinking when I saw you smash your hand down on those pine cones if it wouldn't be less painful and more efficient(?) to do that with your foot on the ground (if it is not wet).
I've heard u mention that u are a pipefitter and I can't help but wonder if u are a union member? I'm just curious because I've worked alongside pipefitters - myself being a union electrician - in power plants, chemical plants and auto plants just to name a few for about 30 years now so I'm just curious if ur union?
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl yes, me too. But Gods in control and we can trust Him to save this great nation that was founded on Godly principles. I love fire too, it's fun to play with

You know, now that you mention it, I did see something about that a while ago. I'm interested. Thanks for the details!

@@dougclark1450 Definitely cool but pretty pricey with shipping on top of that.
I-ll probably get some.
@@theomnipresent1 I agree they are very proud of them.
Nice! I love to see fat wood burn. And I love to see a SAK be put to use too. Awesome channel.
Thanks Tim. See my SAK playlist. TY!

I'm glad you're practicing. That's what the Title and the video are all about.

Extra spaces that I didn't know about.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl there is a small hole in the plastic scale at the hinge for a sewing needle

Are you on Instagram by chance?
No.
Awesome video like always 👍 I sharpened my saw blade, on my knife, and it is razor sharp now!!!!!
The spine of my saw needs sharpening.
Great video again! Thanks for sharing!
Can't beat a SAK
Love mine too!
I love the Alox versions. Farmer and Pioneer X
Wow that knife is really nice !!!
You got that right, love me some fat wood !!!!
Great video! There are tons of SAK knives on eBay for about 1/2 price and plenty of life left in them. Tons of TSA seizures.
I just looked through 7 pages. Lots to pick from.
I'm old school. I use a Bic.

Those scales were sharp. I like the sleeve cuff technique.
Gas in San Diego YESTERDAY you better sit down $ 3.89 and counting ouch . Happy trails

Like I said, Ohhh the dread of it all!
Just FYI you dropped something out of your pocket when you pulled your keys out at the beginning of the video ...
I just saw it. Fell pretty fast. I'm not missing anything. LOL!
Well here in communist California has went from $2.75 to $3.75 in the last week...grrr
I'm worried about our country and the decisions that's being made.
