  • This Magnavox MWD2205 came in with the issue that it eats tapes. All it needed was a mode select switch cleaning and DVD-VCR servicing (didnt record, sorry)

    Une year since this video was uploaded and still helping fix VCRs! Thank you! I've just did this procedure cause I was having the exact problem on my Magnabox ZV450MW8. It was a bit different inside but still the same procedure. Got it fixed, Thanks!

    I just bought this exact model at a Goodwill this weekend, and it did this exact thing. I've been hoping to get in the hobby of fixing VCRs and thought I'd use a thrift store bought one as a start. Luckily I found this video and I think it'll help me very much

      So this did work to an extent; it no longer eats tapes, but there's been issues with tapes playing for 20 minutes and then stopping, barely controllable tracking, which I've manually tried to adjust inside the machine and after repeated cleanings, and some tapes just not playing but play just fine in another unit and then playing other tapes just fine.
      Upon further research I've heard that these combination units are generally pieces of crap, and I've got another VCR that's just a VCR in storage that I plan to work on and hopefully that works better than this p.o.s.

    Hello, I want to say Thank you very much for your videos, I had purchased a VCR for $10 and little did I know that it was super dirty inside , I had put in a tape and it played then when my son found my Disney movies we decided to give it a try, well it ate the tape and the right hand side was not spinning so the tape went all over inside . I opened the top just as you show and wow it was a roach motel of dead and dry roaches, I was in shock, I used my vacuum to clean it out then I went to look for a component cleaner and cleaned it all inside with Q-tips everything you covered - I even left the plactic coverings in a large pail with soap and scrubbed them the next day. I put it together and before playing I FF to make sure it would move forward and it did!!!!! it made weird noises but at the end it eased up so then I RW and covered the lid , connected to TV luckily I had great Component connector and to my surprise and happiness IT WORKED!! both VCR and DVD , I didnt try to record because my son was anxiously awaiting to see my DIsney VHS collection, I want to say Thank you so much your step by step instructions helped me greatly!!!

      probably the clutch in the center that switches from low torque in the play mode to high torque in the FF-REW/eject position. Also could be a brake not releasing the reel tables at the correct time too.

      @@norcal715 Thank you for that... I'll have a starting point now and will do the caps first to see how it goes. The xtal may be a little harder to get so I'll do it last if need be. It jumped late 40 seconds on a couple occasions so there's an intermittent nature to it at times. Best regards.

    Great Videos. I have a Magnavox MWD 2205 VCR/DVD combo. The VCR side the tape stuck in and out, once I push it in, it plays the tape well with the picture. On the DVD side, there is no video output thru the RCA yellow cable, so no picture, but it has sound, so the DVD plays. Wondering if this can be fixed?

    So I've been thur every one of your videos and you work on these often. My model is the DV220MW9. My autistic daughter collects them and watching your videos help keep up with repairs and maintenance. But we started having a new issue, one you glaze over in just about every video. Your test start with checking the function of what in one video you called a capstan I believe. You always check that yours is freely moving, so far i haven't found one where you are unable to spin that bar to move the gears. I can't get it to move. I can move the gears just fine and the belt under it, that I'm assuming connects them, is freely moving the gears when I use something to move the belt, that seems to have got tension and is not broken. It's the sliver thing you try to spin, my just seems seized. Have you covered this issue in a video for maybe a different yet similar brand. I think I've checked every magnavox video you have. 😊 thank you

    • @norcal715
      @norcal715  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did have one that had a seized capstan motor that I had to replace from a scrap unit. I tried to clean it and lubricate it. It worked good but was noisy. I ended up replacing it. th-cam.com/video/l0FVyg4gw04/w-d-xo.html It was a Sanyo, but made by the same company Funai/Symphonic that makes the Magnavox branded units.

    I have a question. My VCR is a Toshiba 4 head HI FI stereo. When I put a vhs in, it plays for about 3 seconds and then stops (doesn’t eject the vhs). When I opened up the VCR and press play it has loose tape towards the “take up” side (no dents just excess) then after 3 seconds it stops and puts the tape back into the vhs. At which point I can eject the vhs. Do you know what the issue could be?

    • @norcal715
      @norcal715  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is it taking the tape up when playing, or spilling the tape after the pinch roller/capstan? They have reel rotation detection if take up is not detected it will shut the machine down to protect the tape.

    Steve, Had a lightening strike close by, power went out, then back on and the tape deck was dead. Checked fuse, was okay. What could have happened? Everything appears to look normal and it was off during the event and was the only electronic that was damaged throughout the house. Coincidence?

    • @norcal715
      @norcal715  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably not, if it has a switching power supply then It may have a bootstrap cap that is bad. That is the capacitor that starts the switching power supply. Its only job is to start it, then it is not used until it is powered off and on again in normal operation. If power was removed and it is bad it wouldn't start again. What brand and model is it?

    • @thetechgenie7374
      @thetechgenie7374 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Likely 3.3v switch regulator if it powers on and off and two light DVD and VHS light blinks. If completely dead could be anything? Without testing for missing voltages and etc can't troubleshoot, or guess? That assuming it a Funai made made like this one.

      Could be clogged (dirty) video heads. If it does not see a quality video signal it will mute the output. Do you see anything (even faint) in play with FWD search or REV search?
