yooooo mr horses this is SO SICK
I don't get the golden martyrs shirt. Who's masters are they reffering to? The pope or the man killing the monks?
sword is so dope
you should go back to the blue profile picture its more recognizable and iconic
So good
"In the forest of fortune, the true archer is not he who hoards the golden arrows, but he who aims to share the bounty with those who have none." - some guy living in a forest...
The medieval society and its future, by Robin Hood
The true archer doesn't care what some guy living in a forest thinks about archery.
"aims" to share the bounty( golden arrows) with those that have none? That sounds like he's aiming and shooting golden arrows at homeless people lmao.
On my recent trip to Japan I came across the grave site of Nakamura Jirokichi aka Nezumi Kozō (The Rat Kozo). He was the "Robin Hood" of Japan. After being caught, he confessed to burglarizing over 100 samurai estates worth over 30,000 ryō (yen at the time) in a span of 15 years. When Nezumi was arrested, very little money was found on him making the daiymo believe he gave his taken treasures to the poor. Prior to being caught, Nezumi Kozō served his wives divorce papers to save them from perishing from the same kind of persecution and punishment, as devreed by the law of the time. He was tied to a horse, a true spectacle as he was paraded around town, and was eventually beheaded at the Suzugamori execution grounds. He is revireed as a folk hero and his exploits have been dramatized in Kabuki theater for years and years. I guess people frequently take pieces of his grave stone because I saw signs specifically stating how it is a crime to do so, I suppose people want some of Nezumi's luck/skill with them?
"Steal this grave stone"😂 but seriously, thanks for that cool info.
Goemon Ishikawa is another Robin Hood-esque folk hero of Japan. They boiled him in oil
Ryō wasn’t really yen, it was a measurement of gold during the edo period. He didn’t just steal about 30,000 yen, each Ryō at the time had the buying power of about 100,000 yen!
That's so sick, about people stealing from the grave stone there's a very similar situation with a Mexican folk Saint named Jesus Malverde, also a Robin Hood character. People steal pebbles from his grave because of a belief that stealing from him gets his attention and blessings because he was a thief in life, so maybe it's something like that. Super cool info though thank you for sharing!
wow with so many examples of "robin hood figures" in the world it would make you think maybe we are living in a corrupt system
Horses casually selling a sword named "deathbringer" in his merch shop is exactly the correct amount of insanity
"You may be Prince, but I'm still your Superior as a paladin"
hi mr horses.
i suffered a loss on my family and these past few days have been horrible. this video was able to make me focus on something else for a while. thank you for providing me some minutes of distraction from my grief.
also, the soundtrack of this video was especially amazing and, at some points, reminded me of the album "flood", by the japanese band boris. its an amazing piece of ambient/post-rock/drone. i recommend it.
i’m so sorry for your loss, may you have better days soon 🙏
Hope things get easier for you soon. ❤
I hope you find peace and strength around you in this time ♥️

This channel is pure gold. Thank you for the visual, audible and philosophical treat.
I take issue with the counter-examples proposed at 10:30. The Robinhood philosophy does not need to mean "steal everything from the rich until they are poor" but "steal enough from the rich to redistribute to the poor until all are equal". So the example of a doctor killing one person to save 5 feels like the result of a slippery slope when the Robinhood approach could actually be better interpreted as "take a kidney from one person to save the life of another" now both people have one working kidney. In this case then, the correct thing to do to save those 5 people is to find 5 donors that can give what they can without themselves dying. An extreme case might be a heart transplant in which case it would not make sense to trade one person's life for the other when they're supposed to be valued equally.
That whole thing sounds like some economists slippery slope fallacy as to why we can't have universal healthcare.
This was also an issue with me. Robin Hood stole money from the corrupt. In no way is that analogous to taking the life of an innocent man or breaking a promise to satisfy the masses.
Commenting to say I agree with the original comment and the above reply to the original comment. Seems like a weird false equivalency to try to equate donating kidneys to redistributing wealth ... 💀
I found that a lot of the counter-examples are pretty straw man. A doctor that kills a patient for organs would shatter trust in the profession as a whole, causing people to stop going to or listening to the doctor.
Also, stealing (in this case, from a corrupt vassalage-based elite) is more efficient in his time and less destructive to individual wellbeing ($1,000,000 from King John's crony who doesn't need the money vs $10,000 from 100 merchants who might miss it) and more prone to create a sense of collective interest among the mass of people.
It was just an example. Imagine one guy with 6 kidneys, but will die during operation. And 6 others that will be saved. Utilitarianism says do it. There the extreme is and between your scenario and it, there is a line that goes away from extreme Utilitarianism.
I took the same issue, glad I'm not just crazy
A big factor that led to the rise of gangs and squatters doing "robin hood" activities were the introduction of enclosure acts and the phasing out of the open field system during this period, which led to many being uprooted from the land their families had spent generations on and many having to leave and become day laborers or starve. It becomes a lot easier to decide to try and make it as a thief and outlaw living outside the system than toiling for pay.
on the commentary at the end about reductiveness in the folklore - i believe truly mythic memes that stick around for centuries like this aren't reduced, but distilled. there's a core essence that appeals to us, and the historical-contextual details of the original story are essentially boiled away through time and repetition. the result is something like a nugget of wisdom in story form, but it also acts as a pointer referring us back to the historical context that created that story so we can understand that wisdom more fully
Very good comment. Not being ironic, I found this very insightful.
A new Horses video AND it's about philosophy? Today's a good day!
@Andres-wl5cm
Watch it.
It good.
I know right. I've had so many discussions with no one already😂 Didn't know I'd be breaking down Ribbon Hood when I woke up this morning. It's lovely.
Word … we being spoiled
@Andres-wl5cm There's philosophy in everything and something to learn from everyone
AND it's 45 minutes long!
Hey man, I just wanna say that I appreciate the hell out of these videos. You're an essential part of my schedule and I watch your videos before work. Thanks man
That's not a horse
This topic has fascinated me since I was a kid watching the anthropomorphic Robin Hood. Ty for making this
It is "Thou shall not murder" not just kill, that is a bad translation as hebrew has two words for "killing" like we have. An unlawful one "retzach" (murder) and a lawful one/more general term "horeg"(kill). And it is definitely retzach in the original hebrew text. Just wanted to clarify as many gets it wrong. Sorry for rambling 😂 superb video, I really the liked style and quality sir 👏❤
He's selling a f**king sword😭😭😭✨✨✨✨
The plaque at 9:15 is located in a little village called Fulking, in West Sussex, UK.

I love your videos. Thank you for continuing to be amazing. I'd love to pick your brain with a convo someday.
This channel kicks ass!
I've been in a book study, discussing civic disobedience and morality, and this video is serendipitously relevant. Love your content!
How does this only have 74k views? I am basically writing this and hitting like, which I never do, in support of this quality.
I was lookin for a proper deep dive into Robin Hood just last month and came up short. This is lovely, thank u
im from nottingham and fairly into history so ive done a fair bit of research into it and william of collingham does also have a fairly local link in that he's named for a village 15 or so miles east of nottingham on the trent river which was essentially a major trade highway for river boats in the medieval period meaning word of him would've easily gotten around
Im from Nottingham too! I sometimes wonder if Robin Hood was more like a medieval version of what Guy Fawkes Mask / Anonymous has become. Simply cause the word Robbing and Hoods are associated with stealing lol xD Either way, whoever he really was. I love the symbolic aspect.
You assume there is a “moral” way to amass riches. I do not believe there is and therefore redistribution is always just.
Nobody gets a billion dollars ethically and should not be considered innocent while others starve around them.
You ain't lying.
how much money in usd a person can amass in moral way?
@@AnonymousUser-og8jj Within Economics, there's a growing school of thought called economic limitarianism that argues personal net worth should be capped at $10 million.
Use the money to fix things like:
25,000 people die of hunger every day, almost half are children, and despite the fact that we already grow more than enough food for everyone.
just sliding in to say the new thumbnail is so sick
I literally watched your new video before this one. Feel free to use that mildly interesting data however you will
Absolutely love your editing, narration, and scripts. It's inspiring to see how you make so few assets interesting to watch
IKR! I wonder what editing software he uses, his presentation is so relaxing and seamless.
@@michaelr2841It's not about the software bro, it's how he chooses to use the material he has collected and turn it into an actual video.
He stole from tax collectors and gave back to the taxed. I think the depression is when it really started getting heavy handed into “stole from the rich, gave to the poor”.
At the time the tax collectors worked for the rich who happened to control the country. In a sense the same thing has been going on today.
@@InMyBunkerit never happened. Yours faithfully, Nottingham citizen.
The rich don't pay taxes. If you're rich enough, there's no way any state can stop you from keeping your money in a tax haven.
The tax collectors are not the problem. We elect them, and we can remove them from power.
We can't do shit to the rich because they have at this point in history accumulated far too much power and too much wealth.
Our governments are controlled by the lobbyists. AKA, the rich. The tax collectors are not the problem.
Robin Hood has fuck all with that.
@@InMyBunker nah we just need to start taxing the right people

You're a real one for using the Disney art for the thumbnail
The fox Robin hood is THE ONLY ROBIN HOOD

Well well well
In a Australia we have our own Robin Hood, a man called Ned Kelly. all completely factual and a real man who's deeds, both good and bad, are notorious. In modern day Australia he is mostly a notorious villain of the people who held power, or a hero for the working class and poor.
Would love to see an essay done on him, his life and philosophy was incredibly interesting, and is still to this day an incredibly iconic name in Australia.
Whos is he? You didn't include his name
@@dgritsak147Ned Kelly! Thank you for pointing that out
Oh ok, I am familiar with Ned Kelly. I watched Count Dankulas video on him him. Some of those Aussies are wild
@dgritsak147 Count dankula is a goober
He even looked a bit like a medieval knight with his armor, the craziest part of that story
Mf really juat dropped a sword with their first merch drop. Most epic TH-cam Channel of all time!!!
I just hit the bell so I'll always see your video essays!
out of curiousity why is your channel named horses?
Oh wow, another great unexpected topic. Good stuff man 😎
We should all steal from the rich become rich and get robbed
Horses, your descriptions of the violence in ballads of that time call to mind the brief scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail when Sir Robin's minstrel went into gruesome detail what could happen to his liege. Good to know they were historically accurate.
I have been obsessed with Robin Hood since I was little and saw the Disney movie.
I’m completely committed to watch all your work it is extremely entertaining
WTF WHY DOES YOUR MERCH GO SO HARD? LOVE THE GRUNGE AESTHETIC
Black Metal is my favorite style of Grunge too
It's more black metal then grunge. If you like this style check out the band The Body. Their music and their band shirts.(I'd love to see your reaction to it tbh). The band Thou too.
That yellow long sleeve that says "I hope your masters suffer" is the best shirt I've seen in a while. ❤ if I had money I'd order it immediately.
@@HonestDepression101 Thanks, I'll check it out!
You have no idea what grunge is
On the topic of violence in tales of knights, I used to have this pretty old book of Arthurian legends and always got a kick out of this one. Two knights duel to the death at one point, and the victor makes some kind of snarky comment to the other. The narration goes on to say, "He didn't have much to say, as he had a sword lodged in his brain-pan."
Just the color choice on the thumbnail and then the mask to boot are so evocative
its always my fav day when u post
One of your best ones yet:)
Thank you so much, great topic idea, great execution!
Again,thank you!
There's a robin hood like figure in south India called kayamkulam kochuni. Kayamkulam Kochunni (born c. 1818) was a heroic outlaw from Kayamkulam, who lived during the late 19th century. He was active in the Travancore area in the present-day Kerala, India. He is said to have stolen from the rich and given to the poor. Legends on his life are part of the folklore of Kerala and there is a shrine dedicated to him in kerala. He died in prison after being captured.
In my opinion, utilitarianism is best used as a tool in a belt of moral ethics. The belt itself can be your own subjective moral code, which is influenced by the weight of different ethical “tools.” For instance, I tend to consider it for certain decisions and let my own sense of virtue ethics - which mostly lines up with my own morality - inform on those which it is best employed, as well as how it is employed. I like to think that real people don’t necessarily follow one strict ethical philosophy, as is often portrayed in discussion and tales like these, or by philosophers themselves, but that we draw on a multitude to inform our decisions (whether or not we have studied ethics). And that subjective multitude is informed by things like culture, experience, and education.
It has been many years since I studied ethical philosophy, so forgive me if any of this sounds ignorant. Just wanted to add some thoughts on the subject. Feel free to rebut my position or laugh at my weak analogy 😅 I can already see ways to write it better, but I think you’ll get my point.
New Horses video? Hell yes.

I seem to recall taxes being something of a driving force . . .
No mention of Taxation by the Norman barons? The horrowing of the North? The divide between Anglo Saxons & remaining Indigenous population & the Norman invaders?
Huh. Missed a lot then.
Robin Hood justice would be a dope shirt…just sayen….nudge, nudge, wink, wink….kiss, kiss
Man your video style choices from the thumbnail to editing is veryyy impressive! like how did you learn to do this?
He has a q&a that might answer this 😊
There’s a triforce in the side of that building at 20:51
The comparison of feudal medieval England with modern inequality is inappropriate. Nobody in good faith would suggest the depraved taxation of a serf is the serf's fault, nor that serfdom is the result of individual choices. The idea that anyone is out there telling medieval commoners to pull themselves up by their bootstraps is as silly as suggesting that the modern person's freedoms (and responsibilities for their own outcomes) are as narrow as the medieval peasant's.
Hello Mr. Horse. Have you considered releasing audio versions of your episodes so I can listen to them on my podcast app while I go for walks?
In regards to Robin Hood's "Band-Aid" action I can't help but think of what Adam Curtis said in an interview. "Do you want a revolution or do you just want the corporations to be nicer?" The implication being that revolution would hurt everyone but if things continue as they are the pitchforks will eventually come out. The idea of Robin Hood is not threatening revolution but rather another form of taxation. This taxation can be reluctantly accepted, like how governments avoid dealing with organized crime. It can be fought which, like Stockholm in recent years, creates a vacuum for which potentially worse problems arise. Or, and this is least likely, the government can behave more nicely to the people it supposedly represents. You know, like they say Democracy is to be like.
Robin Hood is a metaphor for finding a way within a corrupt system to benefit yourself and others being oppressed by that same system. But today "others" is much smaller and holes in the system are patched as soon as someone successfully passes through.

This is similar to a moral question implied in the Ghibli movie "The Secret World of Arietty," which is about a race of small, rodent-sized humans that live hidden away in people's homes and steal small amounts of food to survive: Is it acceptable to steal if (1) you need to survive, and (2) the people you're taking from will suffer virtually zero effects from the loss
Woooooo Horses uploaded
This is the best Chanel on TH-cam
“Before we get started the sheriff of Nottingham owns most of the available footage of Robin Hood, and has blocked my prior attempts to upload this video.”
Shirts look dope, can’t believe you selling a legit sword tho 💀
A common misunderstanding with Robin Hood is that he stole from the rich, but didn’t. He stole from the state, because the Sheriff taxed the peasants too harshly. Robin Hood stole back what was taken.
I don't see how this can be accurate since the sheriff would have been appointed by the king; he acted as an extension of wealthy dynastic rule.
i love your channel. keep it up

#1: Joaquin Murrieta was the greatest hero who ever lived. #2: This one philosopher claimed Robin Hood as a ruthlessly methodical utilitarian, but clearly whoever he was clearly had more complex motivations. There were 10 minutes of reductiveness at the beginning there.
Every time I see this channel's name, a little song plays in my head that somehow self-references how I feel about that same song snippet.
It's from Bullet For My Valentine's song 'Curses,' but it goes like
