An unexpectedly wonderful interview that showed so many facets of Conan O'Brien I never knew about. His interests and intelligence, such a counter point to his talk show persona. .....
@@NemohHoes 'The Kennedy Wit' is a collection of quotes from Kennedy, introduced/edited by Bill Adler. For a terrific overview of American political humor, I recommend former Republican Senate leader Bob Dole's book 'Great Political Wit'.
John Kennedy was one of a kind and yes obviously he used humor as a survival tactic and nothing more. Life was not kind to him so i'd say you are very smart Conan on the subject of this very courageous man. Thank you. 🇺🇸
Very inciteful take on Kennedy and humor. Kennedy was a deeply remarkable person. He was a disabled guy who cheated his way into the military and then became an incredible war hero. He completely re-made himself after his brother’s death, almost like he was possessed. He was gracious and egalitarian as a politician and evolved rapidly in his knowledge and leadership skill. He was personally immoral but as a leader, his moral direction and goals were astonishing. He was determined to make America the best and most virtuous it could be, and represent the best humanity had to offer. We lost everything when we lost him and his brother. The world would be completely different if they had lived.
I found this clip while searching for a referenced essay by Conan, "Comedy as Worldview", which appeared in the book "JFK: A vision for America," by Smith and Brinkley. This was a footnote in the excellent biography by the Harvard historian Frederik Logevall, "JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917-1956" (Part 1, Part 2, 57-63 is being written now). As quoted from the O'Brien essay in the footnote: "As a lifetime fan of comedy and American history, I have thought quite a bit about our funniest presidents, and I think we have had exactly two: Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy... The humor that resonates with me is... the sense of humor one needs in order to hold two opposing ideas at once: that our life here on earth is smultaneously beautiful and terribly sad. To wit, it is the humor of John F. Kennedy." In the longer version of this talk, also on youtube, it is mentioned that Conan is on the board of the JFK library, graduated from Harvard, was also from Brookline MA, like JFK, and is friends with Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg.
I really agree w that. I have a really funny brother. It is sooo natural for him to be humorous and he also had many hardships from a father that thought laughing was really not so good. Now family and friends love to be around him bcz of his natural humor. Truly a gift from God, as I see it. Thank you.
I'd argue that no matter what you think of Trump, the guy is hilarious. He knows just which buttons to push to make his enemies absolutely lose their minds--literally, oftentimes. And that's funny. His line about Rosie O'Donnell, during a debate no less, was absolutely hilarious. He's not witty the way Lincoln or JFK were, but the persona he's created is funny by anyone who is objective--and I say that not as a partisan fan.
Right Trump isn’t as witty as FJK, obviously, or nearly as intelligent, but man Trump knows just what to say at the right moment. His timing is perfect. Really it’s just a totally different type of comedy. I personally find Trump hilarious.
Conan’s view about JFK’s humor is shallow and skewed. Reagan was humorous, Kennedy was witty. JFK grew up in a privileged and wealthy environment. He was suddenly thrown into the political arena by his ambitious father. I think he developed his cleaver and witty expression when he took on the leadership role in the PT boat (WW2) and as a politician. His seemingly quick wit served two purposes: lightening the seriousness of the issue with confidence and the leadership while avoiding any ensuing discussions. He was briefed prior to any press conferences and speeches. So he had ample time to prepare. He was a master tactician in this area.
To understand President Lincoln's sense of humor being similar to President Kennedy's style of humor & candour, watch the movie Saving Lincoln. I'm not big on modern day movies that tend to embellish for the box office dollars, but this one gets it right! Which is telling as to why so few have ever heard of the movie! It's truly a great movie & historically accurate as they come! # 16 & #35 had much more than their humor in common!
I always thought this could really be the most interesting interview ever; something from the most funniest Irish liberal yank about JFK. But no, thanks to the token... "Who thought Lincoln could be funny"? Jesus Christ...
Despite being a horrible womanizer, and his sense of being untouchable, jfk truly seemed like a guy who understood people. Not just rich, not just white. I certainly wish our current president had that quality
How did Kennady understand people? Other than being in the navy for a couple of years he never had a job never worked or built anything. He was handed his money by his father after his older brother Joe died. Joe was the father's first choice to install in the white house with the use of unions and mob money. Its all out there read a book....Not just white? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard if you're not white you're a racist and if you are white you're a sell-out panderer.
Skip Russell why does it matter to you if it’s Conan than? And if he has a degree in American History and Literature, then yes, his opinion DOES carry more weight than most people
I wouldn't call it a defense mechanism... cracking people... and yeah you are funny AT people... and yeah it does get to one's heart that... and with all due respect, you are not making a favor to your heart with some of the things you say about yourself and others...
I couldn’t disagree more. He’s one of the best. Jimmy Fallon just comes off as fake Kimmel is just kind of boring And the others I can’t remember tell seriously terrible jokes. Obviously this is all imo
A young boy asked President Kennedy, “Mr President, how did you become a war hero?”
His reply: “Well, it wasn’t my idea. They sank my boat!”
I've read countless works about JFK and I couldn't agree more with Conan. He hit the nail squarely on the head in his characterization of JFKs humor.
that super rare moment when the uploader doesnt turn comments off.
One thing that makes me appreciate Conan so much, he doesn't make jokes by insulting people
An unexpectedly wonderful interview that showed so many facets of Conan O'Brien I never knew about. His interests and intelligence, such a counter point to his talk show persona. .....
Find the book The Kennedy Wit if you can, it's a treat.
Written by JFK himself?
Sander Lansberg written by Barack Obama

It use to be said that JFK's wit was just as sharp or even better than Lincoln's.
I love this man oh my god
I adore and admire you so much Conan ~~~
LOL
I've seen this so many times

Lincoln was naturally funny....
This will sound strange but I am sure the soul of Lincoln was re-born and was JFK.
Have you heard of the high elves?
TheGoodStuff -Had to look it up. Your making fun - ok, expected that. 😉
Dont tell me, they played Abraham, Martin and John at your wedding.

Conan is one of the greatest!! 🙌

Brother Bobby was hilarious too! Let's not forget Reagan!❤
I liked Reagan but Reagan told jokes (written by other people) not the same thing at all as being naturally sharp and witty.
Jfks humour was mind blowing
Oh God
God dammit NOOOOO

Snideness and humor are not the same thing!
Is there a full interview?
yes, it's called a conversation with Conan obrien...I watched it a couple years ago...it's on this channel

Another silmilarity between Lincoln and Kennedy is they both had open minds
To understand President Lincoln's sense of humor being similar to President Kennedy's style of humor & candour, watch the movie Saving Lincoln.

Listen to the song by Dion, Abraham, Martin, and John
I see what you did there, ya little scamp! 😂🤣😂
You are sick and stupid with that comment about open mind.
Jfk wasn’t
Whats going on with the hair?
I always thought this could really be the most interesting interview ever; something from the most funniest Irish liberal yank about JFK. But no, thanks to the token... "Who thought Lincoln could be funny"? Jesus Christ...
A lovely thing is humour.
I wonder what he would have said about being assassinated!?

Funny...

Didnt realise conan o brian had met john f kennedy?
you can be familiar with a person as public as JFK without ever meeting him. I think Conan is funny yet I've never met him.
0:32 very poor choice of words
I thought I was going to hear something funny JFK said ...guess not
who the fuck is lincoln
JFK has absolutely nothing on Reagan when it comes to humor.
Example adding Weed in Schedule 1 drug and Heroin in 2.
Black kid keeps interrupting and tries way to hard to be funny
It is funny... Wanting to help to Haitians when in reality you are the ones who need help from them...
ASSCLOWN.
CONAN HAS NO CHANCE THEN. DO YOU HAVE RADIATION SICKNESS?
Another POS calling for the collapse of society.
What does Conan know about Kenndy? He was like 7 when Kennedy died. His opinion is no better than anybody that can read.
Skip Russell He graduated from Harvard in 1985 with a degree in American History and Literature
@@micaeladepina1811 You just made my point. Conan only repeats what he was told or read. anyone can do the same.
Skip Russell because your opinion would be any better?

I would not think..that Conan would think.. JFK was funny..thats not Jfk..the whey peoples think of him..im a Conan fan..but sorry
your comment makes no sense.
Conan is the least funniest talk show host of them all
Sander Lansberg I’d say he’s one of the funniest. Also “least funniest” is not correct
I couldn’t disagree more. He’s one of the best. Jimmy Fallon just comes off as fake
Kimmel is just kind of boring
And the others I can’t remember tell seriously terrible jokes. Obviously this is all imo
Idk which president they talking about but RFK was the funny one 😂 Jack was not 😂
