You nailed it. A major American city with a $1.95B budget is worried over a twenty dollar permit fee. It’s not about power and control. It’s definitely about that permit fee.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but since that was public property, he shouldn’t need a permit to fix what belongs to the city. He wasn’t putting new siding on his house or something.
Regular citizens fixing things the city is supposed to take care of, makes them look very bad, that's why they're upset. We need more people like Joseph, kudos to him.

@B Babbich It was reported to the city, and the city did nothing. So he did it he sanded it down and he painted it, more than the city did. If it was a priority to them, they should have done it, but they didn't, so a citizen did it. It looks far better now than it did before. I think other citizens should go before the city and let them know that they're doing a horrible job for the city.
@B Babbich The lack of raised old paint edges in the pictures/video is clear evidence of the prep work having been done. Secondly, look at the 'before' pictures. The paint was already chipped and flaking. Even if the painter hadn't done any prep (which he obviously did!) this would have been an improvement.
You know NOTHING. City governments are worried that people will realize they aren't needed, and anytime someone makes this apparent, they are harshly delt with.
I'll tell you why the city is upset. It's because, SOMEBODY in the city hall was planning on paying one of his, or her buddy's to go and paint it for probably $50,000 dollars, so they could split it behind closed doors and this nice gentleman took that opportunity away by doing himself for the cost of a gallon of white paint. Liberal run city halls have NO PROBLEM overpaying their buddies on the side when the money belongs to the taxpayers and not coming out of THEIR OWN pockets. They're corrupt through their core and the citizens need to vote them all out and replace them.
I’m with the lady who says the city should send him a Thank you note! They look great now and it’s not like he painted them a strange color, it was the same color as before. We need more people proud of their community and helping to beautify them.
Sickening, ridiculous, low down, no good, corrupt board members. They failed to do what they are paid to do, then penalized someone for taking it on their own back, shame on them.

I was a band and orchestra musician back in high school, 1969, that Christmas, we formed and practiced a brass group playing Christmas music. The week before Christmas, we had off, so evenings, we'd meet at the school, then take off in a different area around the school playing Christmas music. Most every place we played, kids would join in and sing the carols and we'd stop and play when people came out, not loud, but enough so people knew we were there. Our last area to play, we got stopped by a local officer, told we were scaring a woman's cat, and had to stop, he also informed us that we'd need to get a permit to do this again, we were all seniors, so no chance there, but even spreading a little Christmas cheer required a city permit. How disgusting.
The city council should be ashamed of themselves for not taking care of the stairs! Instead of trying to punish him they should Thank him! Thanks to the gentleman Joseph for his hard work, people can safely use the stairs and sit there. You did an Amazing Job! Thank You Joseph! 🤗
Its about the money one of their relatives/friend lost because they didnt get to make 20 K for something that cost bout 250$ maybe 1 K including labor. Cali is full of public servants that want to fill up their bags before they retire.
San Diego is the 8th biggest city in the US. Their city counsel doesn't have time to worry about one stairway on a beach (especially with potential roadway collapses in the La Jolla area due to erosion). This story was triggered by regular government employees.
It would be pretty hard to do this job anonymously lol. I see a lot of prep to avoid paint or paint dust contaminating the soil/close plants, sanding, then painting, yeah not a small job. He was there for a while, people saw him and definitely talked to him. But I also agree with your point
I threw California poppy seeds out in the hills by my house during my runs. They sprouted and the hills have a super bloom atm. It’s public land so doubt the city would even care anyways.
Anyone on the board trying to punish this man, needs to be fired! Common sense would dictate the city official should have come out with the back-dated permits, the press for a, "Thank You," press release and most importantly, an ice cooler full of ice cold beer for this great man.
These self important, “ do nothing” city councils are embarrassed that they’re getting negative attention. They need to be removed and replaced with common people who actually want to see something done.
Joe is a very classy gentleman ( and an excellent surfer), I am not surprised to hear he would step up and take care of business. The world would be a much better with more people like him.
Just imagine how awesome the city would of looked if they congratulated this community leader, publicly. It is sad what our country is coming to. Kudos to him.
Thats so funny. Shoot heroin and shit on the street in front of a graffiti spot, no charges. Pay taxes and put your own money and time out to sand and paint some local stairs, possible fines and charges.
We need more people like this. Things start to look bad or start to look bad, contact the city first. If they don't do anything then take it in your own hands and get it done.
What it means is that THEY own the beach. They take your tax dollars and spend it on themselves. Not actual maintenance. Just like an HOA, they will be petty if they think it's THEIR bench.
It boggles my mind sometimes how ridiculous these laws are. If it doesn't harm anyone and has positive results, why even enforce the law? The community should fight for him, if he ever ever gets sanctioned.
@@stephaniecorelli3034 it sure is. The people of La Jolla don’t want to pay taxes and then wonder why their city has no money for things like this. Ever seen how bad the roads are in La Jolla? Rich people don’t like spending money on things that aren’t themselves.

I would often go to parks with my friends and their kids. It took us about 3 minutes to after our first park visit to go nuts from the squeaking of the swings. Since that day we have built a small "park kit" that includes a screwdriver, small ratchet with common sockets, and of course, a few small bottles of lubricant (dry, spray, and grease). We don't make a scene out of it but we take pride in keeping the playsets safe by tightening down anything loose and we help other parents stay sane by putting the appropriate lube on anything that squeaks. If you know what you are doing, make your community better instead of waiting for the government to do it for you.
Sadly it’s also about liability. Allergies to types of lubrication, using tools on public property (for instance slides and swings) can, in some cases, cause structural integrity issues. If we were more of a user beware, instead of litigious, society it wouldn’t matter. Unfortunately local governments are sued when something goes wrong and they need to show records of repair to defend themselves. I’m just saying in a sue-happy society things get dicey when someone “helps” with maintenance and repairs. Be mad at the people who take no responsibility for their actions, at the corruption that keeps things from getting done. IMO.
It is also about a loss of control. Statistics show politicians, upper management, and city administrators etc when analyzed the numbers prove the occurrence of psychopaths/sociopaths/ and narcissists triples at a minimum. One thing all three of these personality disorders have in common is they thrive and get off on control over others. By sanding and painting the benches and stairs, without permission, these three personality types often will view the handy man’s actions as a challenge to their authority, or even an attack on them personally. The reaction has the potential to get very ugly and dangerous very quickly depending on the individual whose authority has been threatened. A couple of examples 1) Gov Whitmer(D) suspended an elderly barber’s license. The barber violated Whitmer’s business lockdown orders. The barber refused Welfare and worked instead. He was around 80 years old. Whitmer did this around the same time her own husband was also violating the orders as he tried to force a boat maintenance company to open their doors for him cause he was the governor’s husband. The business alerted the press. The Supreme Court of Michigan ruled Whitmer’s orders and actions to be unconstitutional and illegal by a vote of 7-0. 2) Robert Telles(D) Clark County Administrator stabbed to death journalist Jeff German outside of German’s home in Las Vegas NV. German had written articles about Telles’ unethical behavior in his elected capacity. Telles’ job duties meant Telles was in charge of handling the assets of individuals that die without a will or family contacts.
@@Clarice-rp7mh Can you provide sources for your claims and examples you provided? I personally do not believe that people of authority show occurrences of "psychopaths/sociopaths/ and narcissists triples at a minimum." Also, the examples you cited need more context. I expect there is more to those stories that would help us fully understand the issues as they relate to individual citizens helping to keep public spaces safe in relation to the story we are commenting on. Without the appropriate sources or citations to provide context, this seems like misinformation.

We had a situation like this here in Toronto several years ago. A person repairs a set of stairs for hiking trail access because the existing stairs were deteriorating with missing steps and missing and loose handrails. The citizens replaced the handrails and steps and painted the stairways with weather resistant strains returning it to its as built condition. The city fined him $1,000 for trespassing and unauthorized construction on city property and replaced the stairs at a cost of $50,000 dollars because the stairs the citizen repaired did not "meet codes for wheelchair access". (On a set of stairs! To a rugged hiking trail!) The funny part is you still can't get a wheelchair down the stairs or nor can a person in a wheelchair navigate along the trail that has steep sloped and small boulders up to three feet in diameter along the path. .
Typical government efficiency. There a privy bathroom in the middle of the Maine wilderness that has a long wheelchair ramp with a paved runup.... this toilet is on a mountain trail and MILES from the nearest road. But when they tried replacing the old toilet, they were told it was required to have wheelchair access because it's on federal land. Even though nobody in a wheelchair can get within 10 miles of it. Cost them an extra $20k to build the privy.
@@TheErockaustin Grants Pass, Oregon spent $1.5 million on 3 crappy bus shelters, the city said they needed heavy improvements for wheelchair access. As for the other few dozen bus stops each one is simply a sign on a post, and wheelchair access is simply the normal regular sidewalk.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but since that was public property, he shouldn’t need a permit to fix what belongs to the city. He wasn’t putting new siding on his house or something.

The citizen that painted the stairs did a fantastic job. The city should be grateful. Good job citizen for taking care of your city.
He should say he’s homeless and remodeling his bathroom. It’s the only guaranteed way the city will stop caring.
Not only stop caring but hand him 4k a month
No good deed goes unpunished.
The city couldn't make money from this and they couldn't tax him. That is all this is about.
I’m with the lady who says the city should send him a Thank you note! They look great now and it’s not like he painted them a strange color, it was the same color as before. We need more people proud of their community and helping to beautify them.
Maybe he should be the governor.

As a plumber that was the wild thing. House is flooding and I’m suppose to wait 4 hours for a city worker to shut it off ? Get real. City need to be put in check honestly !
IMO.
@@erineddy7999 it's easier to sue a regular citizen instead of the city.
A couple of examples
1) Gov Whitmer(D) suspended an elderly barber’s license.
2)
Robert Telles(D) Clark County Administrator stabbed to death
journalist Jeff German outside of German’s home in Las Vegas NV. German had written articles about Telles’ unethical behavior in his elected capacity. Telles’ job duties meant Telles was in charge of handling the assets of individuals that die without a will or family contacts.

I personally do not believe that people of authority show occurrences of "psychopaths/sociopaths/ and narcissists triples at a minimum."
Also, the examples you cited need more context. I expect there is more to those stories that would help us fully understand the issues as they relate to individual citizens helping to keep public spaces safe in relation to the story we are commenting on.

Saw this news clip of Wind'n Sea, ( all the way across the wide Pacific to New Zealand where I've lived for the passed 44 years ), and, heard your name! And I said out loud to myself, " I know that guy!"👍
Remembering what a great guy you are Joe!

1 Corinthians 2:9
@@TheErockaustin thats how they get rich off government dime.
the fine is misguided and is unenforceable.
This is why we have laws
This is what happens when the government forgets its run by the people. And the government doesn’t run its people.
Time to clean house. A re-elect their city members. They work to serve. Not to run the city.
Thank you Joseph! We visitors Appreciate it!
Small-minded City Council - thank the man for his hard work.
Man should be applauded instead of derided. He took the initiative when some communities around San Diego just don't care. Good job
He should be held up as an example of being a good citizen to his community.
He should submit an invoice to them for abating a public nuisance.
Terrific presentation on what is right with America and the wonderful caring citizens of California. Well done to the person who pitched in and got the job done. Thank you La Jolla resident!
This is dreadful....it sets a precedent! Just imagine all the touchup painting and repair jobs around the city that citizens will now take action on...by themselves and without permission. Tut tut. The city could look tidy and cared for.... and the council wouldn’t want that! It’d put them out of the job of sitting around for years and discussing what needs to be done. How dare that man show them up as slackers. 😉
Same happened in Toronto. A gentleman fixed stairs going down to a park and paid for it himself. People had been asking the City for years to fix it as the stairs were getting dangerous and people had to walk around for half an hour. The City had a fit as they wanted to spend at least CAD 100,000 on it.
That is the point , the city wants to give the job to a friend, so somebody at City Hall gets a kick back.
Similar situation in Hamilton. A man built a set of stairs up the Niagara Escarpment and the city tried to condemn them. They were much nicer than the city built stairs . Look up Uli's Stairs Hamilton.
@@ericgeorgetruckgrilling especially ironic given the stairs were named after the one guy who built them initially
Hurrah for him! He should be rewarded for doing something for his community. The city needs to work for their residents not think they control everything they do.
