I think that it does take a lot of talent and ingenuity to become popular, but the truth is, that there are a lot of mediocre pop artists. They just know how to market themselves to target a specific demographic or audience-- these people do not have much talent. Then there are the genuine underground artists who boast so much talent but have such a small audience.
Oversaturation doesn't help anything either
