    Simpler times. As a chap growing up in the south of Ireland I would not miss a single episode of Jack's. I have spent the reminder of my free time hunting stalking and walking in the Irish countryside.......thank you Jack, a legend among men. Happy hunting where ever you are.

    He never wanted to be famous. He never puffed himself up. He was and will always be a true example of an English gentleman. Perhaps one of the most intelligent and well informed broadcasters of our time.

    It seems to be a badge of Britishness to hold mild contempt for the sucess of others. Bravo Jack for his forthright defense of himself. Sort of the opposite of schadenfreude.

    Cheerieo, Jack. You have given me so many hours of wonderful viewing. My father, the same age as Jack, used to talk about 'Old Hargreaves' and he enjoyed his programs so much, all the things Jack showed, he'd done. Most of those things I can't do anymore, because they're not there.

    This is going to sound a bit silly..... but wasn't there a different 'theme tune' to the original Out of Town .... it was a song that went (embarrassed now) "say what you will, the countryside is still, the only place that I could settle down, things out there are so much fairer, ouuuut of town ( humming to self) would love to find it once more , and was sure it was Jacks, any ideas ??? or am I loosing it :-))))

    • @SimonBaddeley
      @SimonBaddeley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Max Bygraves 'Out of Town' - find it on Google. The earlier black and white episodes of Out of Town used the theme song "Out of Town" by Leslie Bricusse and Robin Beaumont, performed by Max Bygraves. As you recall the lyric begins: "Say what you will, the countryside is still, the only place that I can settle down".
      The distinctive classical guitar tune that accompanied later episodes of "Out of Town", "Recuerdos de la Alhambra", was commissioned by Jack from one of Southern's musical directors, Jonathon Xavier Coudrille. While strolling down a corridor at the Southern TV HQ at Northam in Southampton, Hargreaves overheard the multi-instrumentalist, Jonathon Coudrille playing his own arrangement of Francisco Tárrega's piece in one of the studios. He decided to use it in place of Bygraves' song, commissioning Coudrille's group, 'Late November', to play it especially for OOT. The group comprised Coudrille, Mick Hawksworth, Steve Smith, Tony Fernandez, Peter Barraclough and Jonathan Handlesman.

      This tittle-tattler is so off base, since my stepdad could make failing to catch a fish all day into an entertaining episode of OOT, as well as reflecting the the experience of many a fine angler. "When the wind is in the east, 'Tis neither good for man nor beast; When the wind is in the north, The skillful fisher goes not forth; When the wind is in the south, It blows the bait in the fishes' mouth; When the wind is in the west, Then 'tis at the very best." He quoted these lines in one episode when river fishing on a freezing winter day, he and a fellow angler did indeed 'go forth' and experienced the consequences!

    Jack never liked salmon fishing. I wonder if his lack of enthusiasm for the wet fly (a lure and not a fly) led to this. I'd like to see the film with a 'borrowed' salmon. I've never come across it but if it exists in my archives and I find it I can have a look at the evidence (:)). I think J's beef was the tittle tattler's allegation that televisual legerdemain was his habit, when his pride was to make live film in which nothing might be caught and things went awry, and still be entertaining. I remember the Max Bygraves song being the theme tune for a time, as well (maybe the first series?) and I'll tell you why I remember it - I was in junior school at the time, and when the show came on we used to sing the first two lines as "Say what you will, school dinners make you ill..."
    Great show, but would probably be far too slow for most children now.

    • @tinabaker4662
      @tinabaker4662 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Benjamin you’re wrong and right at the same time! Yes, the rivers are empty. The cause however isn’t greedy fishermen, it’s predation by Cormorants and Otters.

      @@tinabaker4662 you are also right and wrong. I was a member of a social media group but left it because of the members constantly posting photos of salmon they had killed. Worse still most of them were hen fish. It takes a lot for an angler to rise above the primeval urge to kill all he catches so its good that the decision will soon be made for them. To take a migratory fish will be a criminal offence. With so few salmon and sea trout running our rivers it is morally wrong and a crime against nature anyway. My reference to overfishing was aimed at the scum of the earth that is our modern commercial fleet that is raping our seas. Here in south west wales we dont even catch mackerel anymore, even from a boat. I suppose the people responsible are our governments that allow these toerags to push species to the brink. Regarding otters, cormorants and goosander in these parts until the last 20 years you never saw one inland. That is because gamekeepers and fishing clubs shot them indiscriminately. Whatever the rights and wrongs of that, one benefit was rivers with much healthier fish stocks

      What a load of absolute BOLLOCKS! I have been an angler for many years and fished with countless other anglers. Not one of us has had a " primeval urge to kill " as we catch. If we fish in a match they go into a keepnet, if we are just pleasure fishing they go straight back in the water with no murderous intent!
      Part of the problem of empty rivers is indeed down to otters/cormorants/mink.
