The Craziest Weapons Of War Leonardo Da Vinci Ever Invented

  • As the original Renaissance Man, Leonardo da Vinci did it all; the polymath was interested in everything from art to science to writing. The famous Renaissance artist's paintings, sculptures, and architectural achievements are as stunning as his intellectual contributions to history, anatomy, and mathematics.
One of the areas where Leonardo truly excelled was inventing. While observing the world around him, Leonardo took copious notes and made sketches detailing his surroundings. In the process, he came up with practical and impractical mechanisms alike, many designed to be used as tools of destruction.

Everything I have ever learned about Leo leads me to believe that his sketches were more Mnemonic devices than actual plans for a prototype. He was one brilliant sumbeach, but he was always distracted. A trait common to most folk of that mental set. The sketches were a way to remember potentially valuable concepts that he knew he would lose track of later.

The idea that Leonardo left details out on purpose is not far-fetched. He wrote many things in code; other manuscripts were backwards and could only be read in a mirror. Others were just schematics with symbols and arrows with no wording at all. Many academics argue he did this deliberately.

Leonardo's notebooks are fascinating, beautiful..and tremendous fun. I keep two great editions of them in my studio, just for the pure joy of it. He had a great sense of humor, and there are a number of his own jokes in the notebooks. One talks about an artist and craftsman, a handsome fellow with a beautiful wife...who produced, well, less than attractive children. When people asked him why his children, coming from such a handsome couple, were so unattractive, the gentleman responded with "I cannot be held responsible for work I am forced to do in the dark!"

I think the big takeaway is that this is a really smart guy who doodled in his notebook a lot and so a bunch of historians grabbed onto those doodles and blew them quite a ways out of proportion simply because he was a brilliant and well-known man. In a lot of ways, he "invented" most of these "inventions" in the same way that I as a 5-year-old invented Jurassic Park by drawing dinosaurs in a sketchpad. Yes, the guy was a genius. Yes, he invented weapons. But he also doodled. Smart people doodle. Not everything taken out of his personal journal after he died should be interpreted as a sophisticated plan to build a flying saucer with the special details specifically omitted.

I agree with this sentiment lol. Granted he was actually also truly an inventor with some pretty solid technical knowledge and skills. Like the video me tioned he built bridges or designed them rather as his civilian job. And doing that alone requires a lot of planning and forethought with how weight will be distributed and stuff.
But yeah I felt the same way lol, like he just had some farfetched ideas and doodled them out. I don't think he left shit out on purpose and I don't think he was some dude leaving behind codes intentionally. He was distractible and he had a lot of ideas. Even the stuff only legible in a mirror could have just been him practicing writing backwards or him looking in A mirror while writing a random tidbit just because it was convenient. I have a similar way of recording my thoughts and there's no rhyme or reason with some of the pages in my notebooks yeknow

Any number of his weapons have been said to be deliberately obtuse. Some historians say that he was a pacifist but he needed a patron. As his patron was warlike, showing him the most military ideas was going to keep his boss happy. He was more interested in great civilian engineering projects, like the bridges, though he did show how to divert a river for the benefit of a city under siege.
A few of his designs have been made, including the hang-glider, parachute and tank. Each had to be modified slightly (iirc the direction of some of the gearing for the tank), but the modern engineers who built them saw the problems and they reckoned that he would have quickly worked out what was wrong and fixed it. Based on the principle that today's engineers fix their initial drafts, it would be unfair to call his first (and often only) design "unchangeable" and not remain his invention if they intervened.
He was truly a man of at least 4-500 years ahead of his time.

    10:00 pyramid parachute.
A guy actually built one per his instructions. At first it didn't work right, it kept tilting to one side. The guy discovered that if he opened the TOP of the pyramid slightly, it allowed a little of the air to pass under the fabric, escape out the top and keep it level. The size of the pyramid and it be a good size and the top hole had to be tested so that too much air couldn't come out rendering it useless. Very awesome stuff. I want to draw and sketch the same way devinci did. I like his effect and style of sketching

He didn’t have a soft spot for war engineering. That’s taking it out of context. At the time, there were a lot of war, and sometimes the lords would almost force brilliant mind to work for them. An offer you couldn’t refuse. Plus it was really hard to actually be “an artist”, the way you could make grain, was to offer your service if you had a reputation to be a gifted person. If I recall correctly, he loathed to partake in war, but that’s how the cookie crumbles for his time.
I’m sure he loves to actually tinker and put his ideas forward, because most of his ideas would either require a rich patron, or it was too far ahead for its time, so by being of service, perhaps he could acquire patrons through the court or further enhancing his reputation.
