I had no idea how much I would love this anime. I generally prefer a more action packed and fight-filled anime (Naruto, JJK, etc.) but Frieren completely caught me off guard and I couldn't be happier about it. I enjoy its slower paced exposition-filled moments more than any of the sprinkled in combat portions. Frieren is a beautiful story.
Frieren really does exposition well. I’m not sure what it is, but characters interacting just feels so natural. If you think you would enjoy another slower paced anime, I definitely recommend Natsume’s book of friends. I won’t say it’s as good as Frieren, but it is character focused and I think it’s also a beautiful story.
Frieren is STILL action packed . I would say , the action scenes in Frieren are more efficient than Naruto or JJK where we often wonder wtf is going on and then the characters go on to explain for an hour what's happening or the rules blah blah; while Frieren deals this in a good pace . We have action , romance, silly antics and slice of life and we can enjoy everything.m
Frieren still looks like she could pass for 12-13 in human years. Kraft looks like a full-grown human adult in their prime. Later on when the elf Serie is introduced, you should note she looks like she could pass for 15-16 in human years. This should give you an idea that Kraft is downright ancient.
@zmortis111 @zmortis111 Serie is as old as, if not older than Kraft. Remember that she was there when the goddess walked the earth. Kraft never saw the goddess. He might have been around that time but that's up for speculation. I would say Kraft and Serie are both over 10000 years old.
Frieren taught Heiter how to suppress his mana. And he taught Fern. One of the reasons why Frieren could not sense Fern's mana in episode 1 or it was 2?
I think that Fern came by that skill naturally. Heiter comments on how he can barely detect her and Serie later talks about people who are naturally gifted in suppressing their mana.
@@ShnNar1000x This episode literally suggests that Heiter taught Fern. Its the most obvious and simplest answer. Of course Fern is still very very talented. But part of that talent is that she has been studying from so young age.
This episode is truly the perfect chaser after the Aura arc. I love that the entire first half of the episode is just dedicated to the aftermath of the conflict (which lasted almost 30 years). By the way, the song for that montage is by the same artist as the ending song.
The funny thing about Aura's demise is, we can actually be very sure that she's not coming back from that. Thanks to her own spell, she is under Frieren's complete control, so even if she somehow survived, she would STILL have to obey Frieren's last order until it is complete. She wasn't defeated when she died, she was already defeated as soon as she cast the spell.
Hey, would you consider watching Danmachi (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?) ? It's a truly captivating story with incredible voice actors and a breathtaking soundtrack. I'm convinced you would love it!
I know that you already saw this suggestion, but I am traing to lobby for a grassroots movement with this one, haha! The "agenda" I want to push is for Spice and Wolf. Just had a remake, and is an absolute gem! I really think you will love this show, and I hope there will be enough support for it! The other show I recommend is Violet Evergarden. This is a fan favorite, but I am affraid for anyone that watches it, since it will destory your heart like nothing else
Frieren knew here party of heroes and friends. She just didn't cherish them then, when she had the opportunity. Kraft is so cool. You really have to wonder what life he's lived of all his rightous deeds only to have been forgotten in time. So it's neat that he's looking for something more.
We don't know if he is from the Mythical Era. Indeed, there is evidence he is substantially younger than that (for instance, if he was from that Era then he would have seen the goddess or talked with people who had seen her).
Krafts story always makes me so melancholic, is he already what Frieren will become in a few 100 years. The only one who remembers her great deeds and the people she was with? It's really sad thinking about it. And my suggestion for you is "Bocchi the Rock". Same director as Frieren, though completely different topic. Equally wholesome and very funny. Thanks ✌🏻😊
Really enjoy your recaps at the beginning as well as the afterthoughts. Glad you enjoy the journey so much (even though it makes one tear up all the time, but in a way that's also beautiful).
I know it's weird to wish someone to cry, but I love seeing how emotional you get over how beautiful this show is. I truly believe it's a sign of that person having a verg kind heart. So keep them tears coming. We love it. 🎵 And you alright 🎵
One of the things that I also love the most about Freiren is that they PERFECTLY put flashbacks, old/new lessons Freiren learns/understands, old/new relationships and the present day PERFECTLY together. Like not a single thing ever feels "out of place" or "too long" anywhere, and I've NEVER seen that before in any series for me but Freiren.
Also now I have never watched this series before but I plan to VERY soon, because I've only heard great things about it, is "The Ancient Magus Bride" series. It's not exactly exactly similar in story I think, but it is fantasy/magic/witches etc. Would love to see you react to that series while I'm also watching it lol.
6:22 - That song is called "Bliss" and is performed by Milet who also sings the ending song. 7:31 - That detail about the Continental Magic Association been around for about 50 years that Stark mentioned will be related to someone that will appear later on the season.
I second the Apothecary Diaries! It's not exactly like frieren, but it's similar in quality. Both are just really good compelling stories told well. Also Kagaya-sama Love is War. Very different to Frieren, but very similar to Spy Family's 80% comedy, 20% serious deep character moments, 100% heartwarming sort of formula.
Fun fact: tomorrow (technically today in Japan) is the Frieren VA's birthday. She also voices Anya in _Spy x Family,_ Gyokuyou in _Apothecary Diaries,_ Chise in _The Ancient Magus' Bride_ (highly recommend if you haven't seen it), and Juju in _My Dress-Up Darling_ (also highly recommend if you haven't seen it).
Since you love Frieren, I would heavily recommend Voices of A Distant Star. Its a 20min 1 shot. Its an experimental style film. Literally one guy in his garage for most of it. But it was so good, it launched Makoto Shinkai to become the Modern Japanese Walt Disney. His film, Your Name is a must-see!
Kraft looks like a human in his 40s. Frieren looks like... 16-18? Kraft must be thousands of years old, if not older. 10,000? With his question to Frieren of what she did before she was with the party of heroes, the implication is Kraft could have done things like that multiple times over and have had enough time that his statues crumbled to dust before his next adventure and he became famous again, and then forgotten again.
Even from human's pov, Kraft's appearance is an adult 15:03 , while Frieren's appearance is like a teenager. If Frieren is more than a thousand years old, Kraft will be much older... and by elf standard, he may be like a few thousand years older than Frieren...
I tend to like slower paced anime like Monster, and I have to say Frieren is a nice mix of actions and character development (also the music quality is insane). I feel like this show raises the bar of anime for me, which is tough that there isn't too many shows that feel like the same level of writing and quality. If I had to make a recommendation for a show to watch next, it would probably be Heavenly Delusion. It has similar things I praise Frieren for, and the story is super interesting.
Much older than Frieren, Frieren seems to actually be what might be the teen stage for an elf in this story. Frierens exact age is not known, but she should be in the 1200-1300 year range estimation wise. She said to Aura she is a mage of over a 1000 years old, if she was close to 1500 or over it the wording would most likely have been different. She also was not a newborn when Flamme took her in, but she was still visually younger. She spend a few decades with Flamme and it is hard to estimate how Flamme legend from a 1000 years ago and her actual life with Frieren overlap. From Kraft and Serie (another female elf) who both consider Frieren to be young we can see that adult physiology of male and female elves does not drastically differ from humans. It also seems unlikely that elves slow aging is right from birth, this might actually be a thing for demons and explain part of their behavioral structure. For one imagine infancy to last for years or even decades of having the diapers changed, that would barely be bearable.
se cree que Kraft presencio a la diosa, porque es el unico que recuerda a una persona alada hablando. los demas, solo la cuerdan como mito. Al igual que Frieren y su maestra.
It may sounds strange, but the episodes between Aura the guillotine and the (Spoiler) -First class mage exam- are my favorites. Even if we don't have much action or actual lore important informations The Old Dwarf episode hit me so hard...
I discovered your channel through these Frieren reactions so I don't know what anime you like besides this one. To Your Eternity is very good for those "outliving everyone else" vibes, just a bit darker-themed. Mushoku Tensei is amazing, but a lot of people can't handle it because it tackles serious issues. Apothecary Diaries is another great series, like a mix between House M.D. and and a "whodunnit" mystery set in Imperial China.
While I've been watching your reactions, I started the journey from the episode 1 again It is still great for my third time. I have recommended this anime Saga of Tanya The Evil (Youjo Senki) and i strongly recommend it again. A romantic, melancohlic and tragic vampire story Mars Red is nice, and The Apothecary Diaries is a very good mistery too.
Kraft is way way way way way older ;). There may be another character that is 10x older than frieren. Kraft is still way older than that. In the anime they never tell the ages.
I love the way the story pans out and how you constantly get drip fed history/backstory, the way they use it to show character growth in the most gut wrenching emotional way, the art, music... *chef's kiss* There were so many things about this anime that definitely solidified it a spot in my top 5. I cannot wait for more!
This ending song is just so powerful, it hits so fucking hard, and if the episode didn't touched you enough, just sitting through the credits can make the tears drop
I'd love to see a reaction to the NieR Automata anime, its last episode comes out tomorrow. Even though the CGI wasnt great in the first couple episodes, the emotional storytelling is amazing.
I'm convinced there are a few things going on with Frieren collecting the fake grimoires. One could say she's just cleaning up the fakes and learning interesting spells along the way, but it's also nice to think about it as Frieren interacting with and comparing her memories of Flamme with the collective's passed down memories of Flamme. If that makes sense. She's like a fairy tale to the current times after all, she's just so far removed from the goings on of present day. But even if Flamme didn't leave those spellbooks behind for Frieren the way Himmel did, she still gets to engage with her own memories of her dear mentor.
It was Heiter who taught Fern how to supress her mana. Because he Frieren do it first. Thats why Fern was already so difficult to find even for Frieren.
Am enjoying your reactions to the show so far Flexie! I think whether Kraft is actually older or younger than Frieren, is irrelevant and the main thing is her perspective which is young (mental age). Kraft seems like someone with no regrets, proud of how he has lived and he may be here to almost highlight where Frieren still needs growing.
If you don't mind watching an old anime (not that old, aired in 2020), would you be interested in a story about another life journey but with a world that has its lore opposite to that of Freiren. The title is Somali and the Forest Spirit.
I'm glad to see your reaction to this amazing series. Frieren is just such a chill amazing story. You are going to love it I'm sure. There are so many great episode left still 🙂
Kraft spoke of his forgotten righteous triumphs, so you can assume he used to be some famous hero history has forgotten. Probably a few times over, given his question about who Fireren was before being the mage who defeated the Demon King.
would be cool if frieren in Aureole can talk to count Granat's Son. Here in this episode is actually science based medicine used. For a cold body to exposure to this much on heat is rly dangerous because the blood vessels widened to fast, it will probably lead to cardiac arrest.
Another interesting thing is that Kraft sounds like he met the goddess in the past and what I find interesting is that his image of her looks somewhat like a winged adult version of Frieren. Yet another very old character later appears who also has an image of the goddess, that character is also said to be the closest thing to the goddess in this world. This other character has blond/golden hair and her image of the goddess matches the blond/golden theme.
Fun Fact: the song you heard in this episodes montage was also the ending song for the Special release of episode 1-4 of frieren in japan cuz it was released alltogether in one batch at once like a movie (cuz the the first 4 episodes were kinda like a prologue set up into what the plotline gonna be which in this case is for frieren and her companions to reach Ende and find Auraeole, heaven - the land of the souls)
Frieren tends to leave you in the feels at the end of each episode - it's an anime that leaves you to think at the end of each episode, which is one of the reasons I love this show. I think that this show is 1 of 1 right now. I loved your thoughts and analysis of Kraft, he is such an interesting character and I hope we learn more about him soon!
kraft isn't repenting for something he did it's just that he is so old that all his legendary feats have been forgotten by the people of today that's why he says it would be nice for someone to at least appreciate the things that he did when he dies
Probably not as long ago as the Mythical Era (the goddess was in the world at that time, yet Kraft states he spent his youth believing she never existed), but at some point long ago. SPOILER Later information indicates he saved the world, at most, 1,600 years ago.
@@phanbinh9xSPOILER His partner was of the priest class, but a later manga chapter reveals the scriptures that enable the priest class to exist (in that they are necessary for their magic) have only been around for 1,600 years or so.
This episode is a window into the Frieren Brain. She makes mistakes, and this one is very serious. The Graf invited Frieren and her party to stay with him as long as she wanted, but with Fall ending, and Winter coming on, Frieren takes them into the Schwer Mountains all the time lecturing them about how dangerous Winter in the Northern Lands can be. Stark is suffering from Hypothermia which is deadly, and even getting a fire going in the cabin does not help, his body temperature is still dropping. Body contact is a good way to slowly warm up someone in a hypothermic state. But some other solution is needed to warm up the frozen Frieren brain.

Kraft's answer to the nihilism of Elves' long existence is believing in the Godess. And Frieren's collecting silly spells.
Can't go wrong with Takehito Koyasu in any role.
Kind of strange to hear him as such a wholesome character, tho.

would be cool if frieren in Aureole can talk to count Granat's Son. Here in this episode is actually science based medicine used. For a cold body to exposure to this much on heat is rly dangerous because the blood vessels widened to fast, it will probably lead to cardiac arrest.
You are asking the right questions: Who is Kraft? How old is he? And what did he do to ask, if they know him?
Noticed nearly everything is named after a german word.
Basically all main names as well as some city and mountain names.
Next is Dungeon Meshi
Ahhh Dungeon meshi~
Fun Fact: the song you heard in this episodes montage was also the ending song for the Special release of episode 1-4 of frieren in japan cuz it was released alltogether in one batch at once like a movie (cuz the the first 4 episodes were kinda like a prologue set up into what the plotline gonna be which in this case is for frieren and her companions to reach Ende and find Auraeole, heaven - the land of the souls)
Every little peak we get at Kraft's life is a treat. He's so cool. Pay attention to his class
Kraft the EILF. Am i right?😏

We all need a Kraft in our life. Someone matured enough with lots of experience in life we can learn from.
Toji’s VA? 🤔
Delicious in Dungeon
Stark is OLD and powerful AF
Did you mean to say Kraft? Because Stark isn’t old…
i'm glad you don't do double episodes with Frieren
Thank you! I like to leave room for diolouge and analysis with each beautiful episode
If you like Frieren i think you should give "The Apothecary Diaries" a chance ... these two are among my all time favorites.
Yes. Kraft is being considered as one of the most powerful character in Frieren. He was the hero who saved the world from the Mythical Era
also he founded a food and sauces company.
Probably not as long ago as the Mythical Era (the goddess was in the world at that time, yet Kraft states he spent his youth believing she never existed), but at some point long ago.
SPOILER
Later information indicates he saved the world, at most, 1,600 years ago.
@@Ryodraco how do u know 1600 years old??
@@phanbinh9xSPOILER
His partner was of the priest class, but a later manga chapter reveals the scriptures that enable the priest class to exist (in that they are necessary for their magic) have only been around for 1,600 years or so.
OMG WHY YOU DROP THIS HERE WHEN 16 EP SHE WILL SEE THIS
This episode is a window into the Frieren Brain.
