  • After exploring High Knob hiker only trail in the Shawnee National Forest, we move on to the Ghost Town around Hurricane Bluff. In this Ghost Town, there are cabins and even a cemetery that is so old that you can't even read the stones.
For a map to High Knob Lookout in the Shawnee National Forest:
    tinyurl.com/hi...
    (Old Cabins GPS: 37°35'57.3"N 88°19'35.7"W)
    (Old Cemetery GPS: 37°35'58.1"N 88°19'12.5"W)
    1. How long is this hike? We hike about 2 miles. It really depends on how much you want to hike but you could easily turn it into an all day (or even overnight) hike.
    2. Is this hike a rugged hike? The trail is considered rugged with rocky areas, creek crossings, difficult hiking paths and changing elevations/rolling hills.
    3. Do horseback riders use this trail? Yes! Please yield to all equestrians and speak calmly to ensure their horses realize you are human. The High Knob Horse Campground is near here and equestrian use is very popular. I recommend hiking during the Mule ride if you want to hear some really funny sounding animals, LOL.
    4. Any additional tips for this hike? Try to stay on the trail at all times to avoid hazardous conditions. Poison ivy and venomous snakes are present on this trail. Bring plenty of water and snack when visiting this trail. There are no trash services on this trail so please pack out what you pack in.

That cemetery is our family cemetery. Lawrence Family cemetery, I think? Descendants of the Shawnee tribe. From the 1800s, early 1900s.

Those bottles are old, but only about 65-70 years as screw top bottles came out in the 1950's in the US. Thanks for providing GPS info, I hope to get out to see some of these things in the future. I really enjoy seeing these old homesteads and wondering about how folks lived back then.

I know they were very poor back then. Life was definitely hard.

My dad and I went up the fire tower in the early sixties. My dad's boyhood home was down over the hill from the tower about a mile. My dad grew up in this forest and hills.

Very cool video! Are the newspapers shredded? Any way to get a timeframe from them? That would be interesting!

I was convinced that I had found an unmarked cemetery there south of the foundation to the old P.O. just East of the log hut over West of Rocky Comfort road. It also had standing unmarked tombstones that were rectangular rather than flat just like yours. Actually more of them than in your cemetery. Turns out they were supports for an outbuilding foundation. That was a let down.
