As a beginner guitarist(bit intermediate) I try to learn different stuff since I don't have a tutor. Can someone identify what type of chord shapes these are so I can learn them? ( i know the names but the category is what I would like to know so I can learn others)
i've been messing around with learning gypsy jazz for 40 years, have watched many lessons over the years , your videos are some of the best available lessons , i play fingerstyle a lot , but find playing with a pick gives the most accurate sound overall , and yes, i have watched your vids on fingerstyle gypsy jazz playing. very nicely done with easy to understand video to play along with ,, thank you !
Excellent lesson for newbies wishing to dabble in gypsy jazz-like myself! Thank you for posting mate. I would have included a sixth song-one of my favorite Django tunes- Minor Swing. Would love to see a lesson in the future. Cheers! 👍👍
Last one is so good , always know a melody is 🔥 when you hear it and understand it before you even look at it, and then when you get it under your fingers it leads you to all sorts of cool new ideas.
Great video! Just what I wanted as prep for heading to my first gypsy jazz session--I suspect any or all of these will get called. Very much appreciated.
When asked about the origin of their style, Stefan Grapelli said, "We started out trying to play everything like Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti." So, Django didn't exactly invent Gypsy Jazz.
Hi, yes I cover that among other things in this video with a fingerstyle focus: How to Play Gypsy Jazz Guitar on Nylon String - A Fingerstyle Guitarist's Guide th-cam.com/video/05LoVsW70jY/w-d-xo.html
Been working on (still am), on "Nuages". Would love to see your approach to this classic. Thanks a Million for your dedication and love of our instrument. I've already learned so much from your Flamenco lessons. It's really a good cross-over between the two.@@TheVersatileGuitarist Best.
Looking forward to your next video. However , I love how you break it down. But, I'd like to see you put the two parts together if that how it's ever played live. I really dig the rhythm guitar almost as much as the melody lines. Really love this. Thanks
Thanks, this is an ensemble style of music so you kind of *have* to have 2 guitars, one rhythm and one lead. To put them both together you would have to make too many compromises with the rhythm and we would lose that driving gypsy swing chord sound. That said, you can make a chord melody solo guitar arrangement of anything, and I will be posting up one of those soon to the song Djangology… see my video “Nuages” where I play my own arrangement of a Django song in free time.
@@TheVersatileGuitarist Thanks I will. Also, call me lazy but could tab exactly the chords you are playing? I hope that's not too much to ask. Keep up all this cool music. I play electric and while I do acoustics too (no cat gut classical ) essentially want to blend this with whatever, whenever if it fits the song I'm writing or not. I'm rambling already but I like hearing what you know about the song , how old it is, who wrote it. Basically a history lesson, hahaha. When dropping names you are turning me on to music I would otherwise never hear.
This is a gypsy jazz guitar from Dell’Arte guitars from Alain Cola here in San Diego. I love this one because not only does it look cool with the F holes like a cello or a violin, but it is the easiest-to-play gypsy jazz guitar I have ever played
This style of music definitely does NOT fall into the Latin guitar category. It's a completely different tradition which has much more in common with the American Swing idiom from which it arose.
That is from Dell ‘Arte guitars here in San Diego. You can find their guitars for sale online, this particular one with the F holes is so easy to play and sounds so great you should definitely get one!
What are your top five gypsy jazz tunes? There are so many awesome ones it is absolutely insane
I wish that I could give this video TWO thumbs up. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you
You just did!

A lot of these gypsy jazz chords are “shell voicings” where we just have the root, 3rd and 7th. Is that what you mean?
Minor Swing is one I never get enough of. Thanks Scot.
That's an F-Hole Gypsy Jazz Guitar which would be called double bouche
Thanks! Pretty sure that Djangology was composed by Grappelli for Django
Interesting I’ve only ever seen Django‘s name on the page!
You’re the absolute man, you’ve elevated my playing so much. Thank you.
Wow thank you!

Wonderfull sound, what brand of this jazz guitar?
Thanks, that is a gypsy jazz guitar from Dell’Arte guitars
Great videos but where is “Minor Swing”?
It's a must know song which doesn't even need to be mentioned 😂
I’m not a real jazzer , but this is my favorite kind ….along with Wes stuff
Excellent lesson for newbies wishing to dabble in gypsy jazz-like myself! Thank you for posting mate. I would have included a sixth song-one of my favorite Django tunes- Minor Swing. Would love to see a lesson in the future. Cheers! 👍👍
Minor Swing is great but there’s really no melody apart form the intro riff otherwise it would be on here! I’ll do a video on it soon
@@TheVersatileGuitarist Thanks mate ! Looking forward to it.
Well made, good tabs. Great lesson, keep up the good work!!
Perhaps we ought not leave Stephen out when talking about who invented Gypsy Swing
Fantastic stuff! Kudos go out to your playing and your guitar tone... punchy, expressive and articulate!
Django Unchained is my favorite guitar man
(Other than Scotty)

Welcome to my guitar obsessed mind!
Minor swing? This one is missing 😂
That’s a great one but not much of a melody… mainly soloing
Where did you get that guitar from? thats my dream guitar.
From Dell’Arte guitars here in san diego
@@TheVersatileGuitarist What make/brand is it? Im in Australia. Nice playing too btw
Nice post.. Great for beginners like me. Rhythm and melody. I will worry about fast complex Django solos later
Thanks and good luck!
Last one is so good , always know a melody is 🔥 when you hear it and understand it before you even look at it, and then when you get it under your fingers it leads you to all sorts of cool new ideas.
And the words are great too!
Wow, I think I have a new favorite style.
Great video! Just what I wanted as prep for heading to my first gypsy jazz session--I suspect any or all of these will get called. Very much appreciated.
Nice!!
Kenny Ball nailed."Dark Eyes'

This quote disproves it how exactly?
Are you using a pic?
Yes, but see my gypsy jazz for nylon string tutorial where I show how to do all this with your fingers
Thank you. Have you done a gypsy jazz rhythm lesson? ie la pompe
