For me to be Calligraphy and not merely geometric art with letter shapes it has to be legible at some level; even the calligrafitti styles can be read for the most part. While I can't speak to the Arabic and Russian letter forms; I did find it too baroque, too ornate, too layered to convey a message. If it can't be read it isn't calligraphy anymore, it's art. It is pretty, but it isn't calligraphy. Don't mistake me, this is absolutely gorgeous for what it is. It is good to push a format beyond the bounds of the conventional and for artists to test the limits of their abilities. However at some point it isn't what it started as and needs a new category. This is Letterform Art henceforth refered to as LFA.

This could not be compared to words that are made to express ideas and thoughts. Calligraphy is not abstract, or you must to remove the "graphy" off. Amazing job at all!!! Incredibly beautiful and wonderful, by the way... For this art we have a word that fits more comfortable, it is "calligram", but even not so...
I dunno man, Arabic calligraphy in particular has always been hard to read, with more emphasis on composition rather than the legibility of the text. It's part of the beauty of this art form imo.

If you want to have a clear understanding of what is written, you probably should pay more close attention to typography, in my very humble opinion.

The only problem with these calligraphy artists is that their works are all alike and you get bored within 5 minutes of seeing one of their pieces.
