Vat Phu - Champasak, Laos

- I recently visited Vat Phu or Wat Phou a ruined Khmer Hindu temple complex in southern Laos.
This ancient site is located at the base of mount Phu Kao, some 6 km from the Mekong river in Champasak province .There was a temple on the site as early as the 5th century, but the surviving structures date from the 11th to 13th centuries.
The temple has a unique structure, in which the elements lead to a shrine where a linga ( a representation of the Hindu deity Shiva) was bathed in water from a mountain spring. Traces of this spring are still in evidence today.
The site later became a centre of Theravada Buddhist worship, which it remains today.
Khmer heritage such as temple in Thai and Lao is symbolic of friendship between Khmer-Thai and Lao.... i want all of us forget the negative ways and starting to open heart to each other... I am Reaksmeychan (a Khmer son)
These Khmer temples were actually serving as symbol of religious influence than friendship since Khmer was a vast and powerful kingdom at the time. But yes, life would be much better if people from different cultures and races treat one another with respect.

Was there in 2017....if one is a Manhattan- Monaco-Cairo-Singapore-Waikiki jet-setter, its a bit out of the way. Took very underpowered and slow tuk tuk from hotel in Pakse to site (and back). Driver spoke excellent English/fare was reasonable. Admission fee was 50,000 Kip - suspect a local would be charged less. Beautiful scenery all around and Wat Phu itself is more than worth the time and expense. Hiked all the way to the top - wonderful views! There were a few restoration/repair projects in progress, but at a typical leisurely Lao pace. Having said that, I wonder how, why and when the Hindu cultures that started all the Khmer building in SE Asia converted to the present Buddhism. Only downside of trip was on the international bus back to Thailand the next day - some light-fingered leftist Lao liberated my camera from my bag while I dozed off.-
The Khmer Empire lasted for about 600 years. The US is only about 240+ years old and has many more years to go.

Beautiful... I would love experiencing this place first hand. I noticed some really nice carvings in the wall around the 2.45 mark, do you know how old they are?

The carvings date to around the 11th century AD.
The temple is directly related to Angkor Wat in Cambodia. A place I have yet to visit, but following my visit here, now wish to visit.

Not necessarily because Khmer is a dynasty in ancient history, today descendants of the Khmer kingdom are present not only in Cambodia but also in Laos and Thailand. They may identify as Khmer and speak Khmer, but historically, their lineage traces back to the ancient Khmer kings. Despite any discomfort, the reality is we cannot alter history and the truth.
