As we learned ourselves, in my son's treatment for leukemia from 2010 to 2014, persistence and resilience are really important in a family's faith and healing journey. So is national health insurance. I was raised in NE Ohio, in a small-town Apostolic Christian Church, and recognize the singing and beliefs of my birth community in this gospel message. Regrets, though, we've had, among which are the few brief visits my boy had during the last 4 years of his Grandma GG's life, when we couldn't afford to cross the border to Ohio, because we lacked health insurance, and he lacked an immune system. (We made do with a loving community, and a beautifully functioning national health system in Matanzas and Havana, Cuba, when we visited there in 2012. Life gives you the grandmas there are, rather than the ones you were born to, I guess.) During David's treatment, I often thought of the 1001 Nights, and the servant girl telling stories to keep herself alive. This was how I formulated my task: how to imagine 1001 ways to administer a yucky-tasting chemo substance daily to my son, over his 1000 stubborn objections and evasions. Our relationship is unavoidably tainted by those struggles, but we're gonna keep working through them, toward love. Again, thanks. (I've gone and heard the video of the people singing in Eastern PA. My 6-times great-grandfather Jacob Hertzler, was the Amish bishop who settled in Northkill, in 1749. I suppose you could call my reactions to this song deep and complex.)
