    Hi, Brian! I wish you could have shown me how to caulk the underside. I have the same problem but my gap is bigger. Can you put A LOT of caulk underneath or does something else have to be done to reposition everything? Your videos are great/very informative!

    My 14 yr old house had water coming through in master bathroom roof. I have a pass through fireplace in master bedrm/master bath. Last January. I had roofing company come and see - they said I needed ‘debris’ cleaned and some flashings replaced. And some tiles near both chimneys were cut. Cost was $3,200. They cleaned all the debris from the valleys and cut some of the tiles back away from chimneys.This was Jan 2023. Here is what they wrote on my invoice:
    “ An inspection of the roof was undergone to determine what maintenance was required.
We found the tiles behind the two chimneys to be too close to the chimneys allowing debris to build-up which caused the water to overflow. This was repaired by cutting the tiles by 6" to allow the water to properly flow.
Secondly, we found the valley metal ends were on top of the tile and this causes the water to spill over the valley and run allow the underlayment, which can cause the underlayment to prematurely deteriorate. This issue was repaired by cutting back the valley metal ends and installing a lead extension on the five valleys.
Lastly, we found the valleys and cricket to have debris. We underwent a clean-up, which will allow the water to properly flow…”
    We had a lot of rain in Feb and March and even some in August. All seemed, but to my shock, last week, I noticed a stain on ceiling of a bedroom not anywhere near where the January leak was. But this bedroom backs up to living room in area where there is another fireplace/chimney. I don't know when this happened. I seldom go in that bedroom and I seldom look at my ceilings. But water must have gotten in somehow. . I called the roofing company and left a message. Waiting for them so call me back.
    I got a ladder and went up to feel the stain and there is no wetness or puffiness on the ceiling.
    November is a month we often get rain. Of course if we get rain before the roofer calls me back I will be sure at watch the ceiling where that stain is. Is it possible that
    there was an unnoticed issue in this room but no problem NOW since the roofer worked on BOTH chimneys?

    we are getting water in between the 2 pipes, leaking down onto the top of the hot water heater. Went onto the roof but all looks good. Storm collar is down and caulked, etc. It was a hard storm so maybe it was wind-blown rain that got under the cap and traveled down the outside of the inside pipe? Maybe add some sheet metal to keep rain from getting up underneath the cap?

    Just a request could you when you have time do a video on bad ventaltion issues and how to spot bad ventaltion problems by looking at your shingles. Do the shingles roll up or under and the effects of the life to the shingle with bad ventaltion. Thanks great info videos.

      Pull a nail close to the Ridgeline. If the bottom half of the nail (that was threw the wood) is rusted you know you don't have enough ventilation. In extreme cases the top 2ft of decking will be rotten

    What kind of caulk do use for those collars? Can you suggest one that can be purchased at big home improvement stores.

      We use Geocel 2300 clear. I don't know if the box stores have it. Here is a link to the geocel 4500 black that we use.
      GEOCEL 4500 Roof Bonding Sealant (black) amzn.to/2OdPZOQ I found a few of the 2300 versions on Amazon just not clear. The 2300 works good but it really needs to be dry to use. 4500 is more versatile, just two color options though. Hope that helps.

    Thanks for the video. What kind of caulk do you use? should be heat resistant since the vent can get hot?

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It can withstand some heat. With that type of vent, it is a double wall and doesn't get that hot.

      @@GrandRoofingIncthanks. Do you also caulk the crack between the vent pipe and the flashing or only between the storm collar and the pipe?

    There is a reason there is a storm collar around gas vent pipes. You should absolutely never caulk them shut because it is a vent for possible gas leaks. Big time no-no!

    • @davidu8688
      @davidu8688 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, just bringing the collar down right above would do the trick.
