- A playthrough of Nintendo's 1992 platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy, Mega Man II.
This is the weak link in the Game Boy series in my opinion. It's not a bad game, but it's not on the same level as the other four games in the Rockman World series. It plays perfectly well with its tight controls and solid (albeit easy) level design. So what's wrong with it?
The real travesty is the soundtrack. It had some really great stuff going for it... until it was put into the game. You can hear a lot of potential here, but it's painfully off-key and high pitched. Apparently the composer hand-scored the music and sent the hand-written sheet music to developer Biox, whose sound programmer seemingly failed to either:
(A) attempt to learn how to read a key signature, or
(B) possess the ability and/or work ethic to bother transposing the original composition to a range better suited to the Game Boy's sound limitations.
If you imagine what Whitney Houston as performed by Rebecca Black would sound like, you have a good idea of how badly the music got butchered in this game. I highly recommend listening to RushJet1's re-imagining of the soundtrack, it's amazing. You can find it here: • Mega Man II GB Remade

i'm surprised about all the negative comments on the soundtrack. i think it's absolutely fantastic
Its great when you lower the pitch by two octaves. Otherwise most of it isnt very good, tho i will say its not that bad, i played the game on VBA and i had a fun time!
The tracks great but they were implemented poorly to the game. It's awful. Luckily people have made patches to corrected the OST to sound as it should have.

It's amazing that there was enough of his corpse intact to make that skull cloud when he hit the earth. I would've thought he'd have been a pile of ash from that reentry.

Tbh I genuinely love this soundtrack, or at least its composition- it's unusually dark and morose for a Mega Man soundtrack, and really if it weren't for its butchering it could have been the highlight of this game.
Personally I listen to Tpcool's rendition of the songs, it's not quite as epic as Rushjet1's but sticks closer to the original intent. Either way give Mega Man II's soundtrack a chance- behind the crap instrumentation is a hidden gem.

In and of itself, I liked the soundtrack of this game. For me, the issue wasn't its noise but its context. If it was attached to new content it wouldn't have clashed with the nostalgia of the NES versions of the eight masters. I'd have rather have remixed versions of the NES stage music. The new music felt out of place, not bad.
It's the weakest of the five Mega Mans on the Game Boy, but it's still quite a good game. You might want to turn the sound down, though...

In my opinion "no matter how unpopular it is" is that my favorite NES era Mega Man game is the 4th one. It had both the Mega Buster and the Pharaoh Shot which in my opinion kicks the metal blades ass as you can keep it above your head to damage foes and it still could be fired in 8 directions. In all seriousness 2 wasn't all that good, it was better than 1 but then most titles in the Mega Man series are better than that game plus I can't really like any of the games before 3 thanks to the fact you don't have the slide which was introduced in 3 and was a freaking godsend.
Somehow, there js a little bit soundtrack that's very similar to Megaman 3 on NES, especially the "get weapon" soundtrack.
In fact, this is the only Megaman game I played on Gameboy, and it's also one of the easiest Megaman games to beat.
Oh, and not to mention, CapCom, once again, usually makes a lot of games on GB that has loud sound like this one for example.
Back in the day I also mentioned how bad the 2nd stage soundtrack of The Little Mermaid also on Gameboy was (it was removed because I moved this account into a brand account) and also the prologue soundtrack was pretty annoying too.
Is it like everytime I play CapCom games on GBx (excluding GBA), I have to turn it down?
30:16 help me understand. You've been collecting all E-Tanks so far, which is way more than the limit (4), which means you were collecting them for completion purposes. Then, here you simply jump down, screwing up a 100% E-Tanks run. It's hard to find any logic when it comes to people collecting E-Tanks in the MM classic series. Either get them all or don't even bother.
Metal Man's theme in this game is an odd guilty pleasure of mine.

Another strange flaw with the music is that if a sound effect plays on one of the channels, the waveform doesn't go back to how it was for the song so for the next few seconds afterwards it has the sound effect's waveform

Dear god, I feel bad for the composer. All of that potential gone to waste. Instead of it sounding like a beautiful soundtrack, it almost sounds like something you’d hear from a yong yong game (the people responsible for sonic 3D blast 5 and others)

Most people only grew up with Mega Man 1 and 2 for the Game Boy. Maybe some even had the chance to try 3 but man.... if you grew up and own MMIV OR MMV, I envy you as those came so late in the GBs life span.
I agree...something's wrong with this game. It's almost like Capcom didn't put it out... However, I have to credit it. Although by Mega Man game standards it was easy, it was the first Mega Man game I ever beat. And that was important. You see, back in the day I had adjusted to the thought that I was simply a bad gamer and would never be as good as other players, so I often simply quit after the first Continue screen. However, I was stuck in a road trip with this one for a couple weeks and I beat it just as I got home. From then on, I plugged in Mega Man, Mega Man 2, Mega Man 3, and the rest, and every time I died I told myself: "Hey, I can beat this. I already beat ONE Mega Man, didn't I?" And eventually I did.
So...if it wasn't for this one, I might never have become a gamer.

Looking at the Japanese names for these GB games, I now noticed why *Mega Man: The Wily Wars* in Japan is called *Rock Man Megaworld*
The "mega" is the *Sega Mega Drive*

While the game itself is alright, but the easiest game in the Game Boy series, the music ultimately lets it down. Capcom outsourced this one, not to Minekuchi Engineering, but to someone else whom I forget. This is where this game went wrong, Minekuchi tended to do right by Mega Man games.
The soundtrack in the game is absolutely ear piercing!
Edit: Hearing it again, the music is beautiful and original compared to the others, to bad the pitch is too high, it kinda ruins the soundtrack.

First game boy mega game I got and beat. Don’t understand why people to go metal man first, I went to clash/crash man to beat him for rush coil that is useful. Has Mario sound effects when collecting extra lives.
Smart developing from Capcom. They knew they couldn’t fit the full original game so they added the ground slide. Rush. Plus exclusive music and level designs. To make the game unique. Instead of just scaling it down.

This series is definitely worth a play through. It’s something I just would have bypassed because it has the same title name. My first thought would be. “I Already played Megaman 2”.

Capcom had pretty high quality standards in those days, and were particularly known for their in game music. Gotta wonder how this slipped past. Compare this to, say, Gargoyle's Quest or DuckTales. Mmm hmm.
Some of Capcom's earliest GB sounded really rough. DuckTales is a perfect example - the GB version has the same songs as the NES one did, but they're totally butchered by the constant drop outs for sound effects. Even when the sfx aren't cancelling out the music the songs still sound pretty weak in comparison.
That is true. My guess is that they hadn't fully mastered the system's sound capabilities yet. Still, they do sound better than THIS.

Early GB games are basically inferior to the NES when it comes to sound.
I've noticed that the NES has the upper hand in sound when compared to GB games
(Hint Hint!).
In some case like *DuckTales* the sound is not as clear as the NES, but comes close.
The GameBoy had a sweet sound chip, though. It's often the go to chip for chiptune artists. I love the deep bass it was capable of producing. With some headphones on, it was pure bliss. Batman, Contra, Castlevania. All awesome soundtracks.
3 is the magic number.
You should try its updated version, which was recently released in Mega Man World 2 DX, which is in color.
What's the correct color scheme of this? Some videos/emulators have it black & white, I only remember the green/yellowish colors like the above.
It would look like this on an original game boy, they later came out with the game boy pocket which was black and white I think.

Holy cow that music is terrible. And that's a shame because I always thought the GB made some great sound and music effects, especially with that sweet, sweet stereo sound in your ears. And I recently revived my original GameBoy by buying the guts of an old beat up one and stuffing them into my nearly pristine case (mine died a tragic death of pixel loss within a couple years, and I kept it in a box all that time). Listening to the music in Super Mario Land and Nemesis brought back so many old memories, and the music was just as good as I thought.

I just picked up the first mega man game for gameboy.
Pfff, I was not able to play the other games, but I just know I like all about this game. It was hard to me when I was young, it is really easy now... but still I saved it from selling and it works on my gameboy green ^^

Yeah, that's the sad part! This soundtrack actually has great compositions, but they're ruined by horrendous instrumentation! Well, at least there are fan videos that correct this so we can actually enjoy the music for what it was supposed to be!
