      I was thinking that it maybe also have something to do with how proficient someone is in a certain language. If moreso, then they know how to utilise words to more accurately express what exactly they mean, as if there were a difference between merely using and carefully choosing a word. It might also be that language is inherently tied to culture and thus allow for only certain ways of expressing something that another language and culture would handle in a different way.

    Steve, as a fluent speaker of Mandarin myself I can see not only have you learned the language but you seem to have both developed a strong 地道 accent, but you can articulate yourself very well. That is impressive. I agree with your three points, additionally as western speakers, I think we need to do more to encourage English speakers to take up a second language as a hobby.

      @@jayangli He said in Chinese "linguist" refers to people who studied linguistics but he never has, basically is just someone who likes languages. I am not sure which bit you are referring to with Japan but at the start he talked about how you need to listen and pay attention to the sounds properly, about how people commonly hear something then repeat back a different sound referencing "Kato" which I am guessing is someones name? Sorry if I missed anything, still quite new to Mandarin

    • @TeacupChinese
      @TeacupChinese 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jayangli He said in English 'linguist' has two meaning. It can mean someone who speaks a lot of languages or someone or studies language academically. So, he cannot call himself a 语言学家 (the Chinese translation of 'linguist') because he's not the academic kind. So, he invented a new word, '语言家'.

My Chinese friend is an English teacher and she wants to show this video to her students. She is constantly frustrated by the way in which she has to teach English to her students. They spend a large amount of time on grammar study and also simply studying how to pass the exams yet the students ability to understand English is poor.

    I’m a native mandarin speaker from Taiwan so my accent isn’t exactly like his. I speak several languages myself and pride myself on my articulation of languages i speak but man his Chinese articulation is so on point considering he’s an adult learner. There might be few very mild accent giveaways in his inflection but it’s so subtle that it’s easily overlooked. If anything, the accent only makes his speech sound so natural. I’m amazed.
    His key points on attitude and adult language learning are exactly what I hold on to within my language learning experiences. Learning like a child is the key to success.

    Now, after a few months of study, I understand almost everything he said.
    What’s been helpful to me is listening to Chinese language vlogs. I’ve listened to at least a couple of hours of 罗宾 on TH-cam, while comparing what I hear to my dictionary and taking notes, and I have found that it is drastically increased my language level.

I'm also studying the first few volumes of the New Practical Chinese Reader series, it's honestly more of a supplement to me, but it's very helpful for reading and writing. Aside from that i just look for listening practice videos or other (more) interesting content on YT

    Okay I've been studying Mandarin for four years and I'm asian and this white guy's accent is so much better than mine... *jealous*

      You think that language skills are in our genes?

    • @cindy1324
      @cindy1324 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I wouldn't say they're inherent in our genes, but from my past experience I've met many Western people who are not as good in Eastern languages, and the exact same vice versa, but there are exceptions of course (as you are one of them), and there are a variety of reasons as to why that is. But I don't know, maybe my opinion is different from that of others.

      Jasmine P As Steve pointed out in the interview; it's about attitude. Tonal languages sound weird to those coming from English/German/whatever and some people try to avoid using them at all when speaking Chinese, because it makes them feel too weird (having never seen white/black people use these tones). Perhaps, Chinese born abroad have less trouble mentally switching because of the number of people in their proximity (even if it's just TV shows etc.) they have seen doing this. I think that's an important element to this difference. If you look at Benny Lewis for example, he claims to be fluent but it is most obvious he hasn't fully overcome the tone-awkwardness.

      +Jasmine P That's because not many westerners learn Chinese. Even fewer attain this level of fluency.

      Keep it up! He's been studying for decades, which might be a reason of his expertise; dont compare yourself with anyone and keep motivation up.

    Your chinese sounds great. Can I ask how long it took you to learn to speak so well? I know that if you spend 10 hours a day you can be quite fluent but most people don't have that much time. I could probably spend at most 1 hour per day learning. Does this mean that it would take me several years before I can speak simple chinese?
    ps. Is the chinese on LingQ mandarin rather than cantonese? Thanks!

    Nice video, i'm also learning mandarin! Maybe someone can answer my question? How can you speak so fast, and still get all the tones right? I mean like the 3rd one, it's very loooong.. so how can you speak that fast, and get them right?

    Haha ok so, I started learning Chinese a month and a half ago. I remember not understanding anything like a month ago. I can now understand some 50% pretty clearly. What I'm missing is the hard vocab though so that other 50% will take a while to get down.
    I'll come back and update this sometime in a few months :B
